Tom Petty's new album just hit No. 1.
How many units did it sell? New sold 75,000 the first week, right?
(from Billboard) The band's new Hypnotic Eye arrives atop the chart, selling 131,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 3, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the best debut sales week for Petty since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991, and his best sales frame overall (debut or otherwise) since 1994, when his solo album Wildflowers sold 161,000 in the week after Christmas. http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6207083/tom-petty-1-album-first-billboard-200-hypnotic-eye-heartbreakers
Geez, if he can't do it, why can't Paul. Frustrating.
Because he is seen as "Beatle" Paul and everything he does "bites" in comparison. Sorry, just needed to vent - lol !!

It also helps that when Tom Petty is interviewed about a new record -- he actually DISCUSSES THE NEW RECORD!!! -- rather than 90% of the interview being about the first few Heartbreakers LPs in the 70s.

Once upon a long ago, we were current Wings fans and we have such fond memories of those times/songs....

For one thing, Tom Petty is getting airplay.
He is? I just checked the Mediabase charts on FMQB and at the moment it's pretty unspectacular: Mainstream rock, 46 spins in the last 7 days http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255599 Triple A, 549 spins http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255599 I don't see Petty's new record on any other charts. That's about the amount of play the "New" single got, or a bit less, in somewhat different radio formats. Both records, of course, picked up a few spins here and there that these charts don't catch -- noncommercial stations, a spin or two on classic rock here and there, etc. -- but like other aging rock acts, Petty is getting nothing out of Top 40 or Hot AC.
Well, all 549 of those Triple A plays must be from the one in my city -- because I am hearing it constantly.
This should take you to a list of the 20 stations playing it the most. Is your hometown station on it? You can click through and see the station's most-played songs: http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255603
-
It's on there. Regardless, my issue is that that same station in my town has yet to play a single track from NEW -- despite a handful of requests from myself, alone! And now that the buzz has worn off, the album is dead here. Such a pity. And if they request an interview with Paul when he gets here in October, I hope Paul tells 'em to f-ck off.
-
I get so upset when radio stations won't play a request. I can remember being on a marathon mission to get them to play Strawberry Fields.... Called and called had people call and they just wouldn't Send me their number, we can alternate calls

I can't blame McCartney entirely in interviews, almost all of the questions he is asked are about the Beatles.

I sure wish he would sell NEW CD's at his shows... it's a GREAT album I think some of those Beatles fans would really enjoy it if they had the chance to buy it. I remember playing some of Paul's music for a friend who only knew Paul with the Beatles, he was shocked in a really good way!! Paul may as well be that radio station Audi is calling... j/k I just went to a Heart concert and bought the Blue Ray and the CD/DVD . I usually always buy at least a CD from whomever I go see play! It's a natural and I've gotten some really good material that I was unaware of, especially if I only knew the band's 80's material or something like that!

It is mind boggling that he will not sell his CD at concerts along with souvenir T-shirts etc.

Gotta disagree. I do media relations for a living and the first thing that anyone who deals with the press learns is that you don't have to answer the question that's asked. Both politicians and entertainers become quite adept at this -- often annoyingly so. Paul could easily talk about the new album even if he's asked only about the Beatles. How? Something like this: Q: Is it true the tune to Yesterday came to you in a dream? A: Yes it did. Ideas for songs come to you in all sorts of surprising ways. One of the songs on my new album started with... This is Public Relations 101. If Paul talks about the Beatles, it's because he's okay with talking about the Beatles.

Out of the four Beatles Paul was the only one who really loved being a Beatle. The other three could take it or leave it which they did. George never really liked talking about the Beatles too much. John Im no so sure, Ringo yeah he likes to talk about the old days sometimes. But Paul I think was born to be a celebrity. It's nice that even though he's being interviewed for his "New" album and is asked about the Beatles that he doesn't mind talking about it. Like Paul said in his song Early Days "I live through those Early Days."

Yes, he could do that but why. That type of question is not too personal or controversial for him to "duck" it. He also is fully aware that the interview audience like most of his concert audience probably loves the question and wants everything to be about the Beatles. I still blame interviewers for the most part because my goodness if you don't know he has been asked about the Beatles for 50 yrs and nothing you ask is new or exciting I give up I will blame McCartney for not really saying in a pre-interview that he wants to only talk about his latest recording. I am sure if he did this they would oblige, like they are really not going to honor his request - lol. Yes, he is fine with talking about the Beatles but wish his PR would tell him to stop or limit it when he is supposedly getting publicity for his new recording.

Ringo doesn't even care to talk about the Beatles so much. He'll roll his eyes or say "that band" yes...Rory Storm...as if the Beatles are not the cream of the crop. He pushes his new stuff all the time. Paul IS the keeper of the Beatles but should also be promoting his solo music. The man is STILL a genius.

Problem is that he believes his concert audience thinks his solo music is crap - lol

I think part of the problem is that many of the people in Britain tear Paul apart in the local press. It's really brutal, like really bad bullying. I remember the day after Ocean's Kingdom, they were absolutely crucifying Paul in the local comment section of the newspaper. Now they couldn't have even seen the show, because they were in England and the show was in NYC. It was brutal. During the Jubilee for the Queen, Paul played at that event, and I really enjoyed it! However, people were tearing him down in the comment section of the paper again. Again very brutal, bullying comments. Sort of like he's done nothing good since the Beatles, and other very mean comments. Firstly, I really hope he doesn't read that vile stuff, because it's not true and would be hurtful to read. He is so battered down over there, perhaps he gets affected by it? I really hope not. Thank goodness when he goes around the world, he still fills huge stadiums full of people who adore him and his music!! Perhaps he really just misses those Early Days... It's one way of bringing it all back. Maybe it's really sad for Paul to play Wings songs and other songs from when he was with Linda? Who really knows? One thing about Paul, he just keeps moving on, making beautiful music! I too wish that NEW was being pushed more. Or at least sold at his concerts, on a trial basis even. People are missing out on one of Paul's best albums, in my opinion. He can do what he wants. We just want him to do well, don't we? We want people to Appreciate him, the way we do!

Why would Paul love to take about the Beatles? Because they are the biggest thing in history, no achievement can top it! why was George and Ringo and John not happy to talk about the Beatles? it is all about ego. George: he was the third Beatle (sorry George fans we are talking about facts now) not one of the main two singers or composers till the last year when the Beatles were about to split. George found himself success in years 1970-1971 as George Harrison more than the Beatle George. thats why he didnt want to re-unite the Beatles even on 1974 when all the others were about to do it. Ringo: he was way behind the other 3 Beatles, found some success in 70's and wanted to built a solo name around it. he can not talk much about composing the songs in studio for the Beatles as he was out playing chess till its time to record the drums track. John: this is a totally different story. Logically John should have talked about the beatles the way Paul did. or maybe more cause he formed the band. but if John was happy at the end of 1969 after long years of what the Beatles have achieved he wouldn't quit and split the Beatles! he was angry that his Partner Paul was more in public eye as the main force behind the Beatles. Paul songs were selected as singles of the beatles. people prefer Hey Jude or Lady Madonna on Revolution. John's ego simply cannot accept that. split and do projects by his own name (and yoko). and his anger will last in 70's because Paul was making more success and touring the world with new band. so ego prevented him from talking comfortably on most of his interviews about the Beatles. Does Paul talk more about the Beatles than his himself as a solo artist? the hell yaaaaaa! you don't need to remind people you were in Beatles every time ! if someone does not know who you are or who the Beatles are then he/she are not related to anything called music! you have 4 decades of solo effort that can be as good and strong as the second best effort in rock'n'roll history! or at least among top 5 list if you talk about the Beatles only then people will not take any other effort seriously back in 70's Paul didnt talk much about the Beatles, he did focus on his new band which was a main reason of his(wings) great success
