Fly Paul Fly to Australia:
True, is it known what the competition is when they decide and who makes the decision? Does Paul and management have the choice?
Different artists announce release dates of their new albums at different times. Katy Perry announced the release of her upcoming (Oct. 22) album in late July. Lady Gaga announced her (Nov 11) album in the first half of July. Pearl Jam announced their (Oct 15) album in early July. Even the upcoming Beatles BBC set (Nov 11) was announced nine weeks in advance, which is a considerably shorter window than the above. Paul's album was announced only SEVEN weeks prior to release. It seems to me that if they were to keep it under wraps for that long, they could have looked at the competition on the horizon and picked a "lighter" week to issue New. But they didn't. Regardless, I thought the thing would sell at least 100,000 (US) copies. If they can't move that many, they would've had a tougher time hitting #1 even on a slower week. Oh well, missed opportunity, IMO...
And apparently, the iTunes strategy was to have just ONE edition so the sales wouldn't be split on that chart. But when that one edition costs $13.99, that can put some potential buyers off.

I see both versions on (US) iTunes (?).

At the Walmart I work at we have sold 7 copies of NEW week to date. Not sure about deluxe because we are sold out I think we only got 2 or 3 in. Pearl Jam has sold 0 week to date and we've sold 1 Miley Cyrus Bangerz.
-
well here in the UK i think an improvement from #4 to #3 is hopeful as its cher infront in the midweek chart but since Wednesday Paul has been well above cher on amazon and itunes, where from Monday he was well behind her on itunes.
-
At this point in time i dont know if it'll get to number one,nor do i care to be honest what i would love to see was some traction in the charts and for it to hang about in the top 10-20 for the next few months, given the speed records crash into the charts and sometimes disappear with equal speed so it would be nice to see it hanging around for a good few months yet. Hand on heart im not so sure it will mainly because of the weird Xmas season that usually sees all sorts of greatest hits albums come along, but we'll see.

Hmm, I'm sure there was only the deluxe when it was a pre-release. I remember looking at his whole catalogue at one point after buying the song "New" and noticing that some of the bonus tracks that used to be on older albums are now gone.

I am just hoping that "NEW" has legs and can stay in the TOP 10 or even TOP 20 for a few weeks. This album might have more initial "buzz" than any Macca album since Tug of War but he needs to keep up the momentum. What he needs in the next week or two (no later) are a few high level appearances and continue to showcase songs from the Album. Some good ones might be: Good Morning America or Today Ellen CBS Sunday Morning Leno Another one that would be good is Piers Morgan on CNN. Let's hope we hear about one of these real soon.

In the absence of a single getting serious radio play, it will need something like that. At this point a morning or daytime show is a better bet since he's done 2 late-night shows already.

The music buying public is not on this forum. This will be the peak week for NEW. It will have legs and will likely be another Gold Album for him, but Katy Perry will be # 1 next week until Lady Gaga's new one in Nov., and that will be #1 until Britney Spears' new one in Dec. This is the world of the music biz now. As the person from Walmart attested, CD's are dying. Vinyl is still hanging on, but downloads are predominant. McCartney's album, as great as it is, will not have the success of Perry, Gaga, or Spears.

Didnt during Paul's divorce prove that his cd sales were pretty much stagnant even back then,he's not at this point going to pick up masses of new fans it just will not happen, however i cite the case of Rod Stewarts Time album, that HAS hung around for about 6 months now in the UK album charts and a fair chunk of that time was at number one and in the top 5 i feel it was down to a number of factors,1, it was a bloody good album firstly but secondly the time of the year did help it along and gave it the legs it needed to keep Rod in the spotlight perhaps for the first time in many a year over here in the UK. Pauls album will almost certainly be blown out of the water once the "big guns" start arriving in the charts whether we like it or not,pop music is bought by kids as it always has been,i cant help but feel for all of Pauls promotion (and i admire him greatly for doing so much),much of it will be wasted after this week perhaps a release ina couple of months once the Perry,Gaga,Spears express has moved on would have been a better bet but who knows its all conjecture and musings on a dull friday lunchtime.

"Perhaps a release in a couple of months." Well, that could happen if there's a super deluxe tour edition version of New with "Struggle" and "Secret Life of a Party Girl" and some live tracks and whatever else. Not that it will get anywhere near #1, but at least it could rack up a few more sales and a brief blip on the chart again.
-
I must admit i dont like the "deluxe" album route but many artists use it these days i suppose,i'd hate to see this fine album get buried under the weight of sheer numbers that those ladies will bring to the charts over the coming weeks it'd be a real shame.

On the CBC, the song NEW went up to number 5 but it's based on fan votes on their website

All Paul needs to do is give each of his kids a $million and have then buy as many albums with that as possible, and he's got a # 1!!! I don't think he cares that much about chart positions. I mean, it would be cool if he got there; that would make him happy, but to sit and analyze who's doing what and when just to decide when to release new music is just too demeaning and beneath him. And apparently, the iTunes strategy was to have just ONE edition so the sales wouldn't be split on that chart. But when that one edition costs $13.99, that can put some potential buyers off.

I figure a top 10 placing in both the US and UK. Probably the same for Sting and Elton, who if I am not mistaken have new works out as well?

Elton hit #4 in the US, and Sting just missed the Top 10. Paul is set to hit #2 or #3, so in that context, this is certainly a success, just the reality of today's charts and music scene.

These, again, are estimates, though this site has a pretty solid record with its estimates. If they're right, Paul probably debuts at #3, but has a chance of slipping past Miley for #2. Buy a copy for a friend today!

Heard tell chart sales are too close to call between #2 and #3 in the US album charts. This genuinely might be an occasion when popping out on Saturday to buy your copy of NEW - if you haven't done so yet - could secure Paul the #2 slot when the album charts are published. Martin

And here's Billboard's assessment of how the chart will shake out: Pearl Jam looks like a lock for #1, but it's a scramble for #2 -- http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/5763106/avett-brothers-paul-mccartney-heading-for-top-five-on-billboard
