New in the Charts Thread

A repeated request, but, alas...

Has 'New' gone platinum worldwide yet? 'New' has probably received the best reviews (by fans & critics alike) for a Macca album since 'Tug of War'.
-
I'd say the new album has seen its best reviews since Electric Arguments. Critics were blown away. If you find that debatable, I'd say Flaming Pie may be his best-reviewed album since BOTR.

Bruce M. I saw that on a forum called ukmix.

Japan Oricon Weekly: 51 (23) 22 NEW 1,450 / 89,272 source: ukmix And the shows there were cancelled

It appears that Paul will be fine, and will recover completely from this illness in Japan, which is fantastic news. This story got a good amount of media attention; I wonder if it will nudge New back onto the album chart. I know: not the best circumstances, but it seems possible, at least. We won't know till next Thursday, though.
Nope, nothing.

You could have provided the link instead of making us hunt for it. Here's what's posted re: Peru: http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=104692 And here's Japan, showing Paul back in the top 10 albums earlier this month: http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15868&start=4775 There may be details in there somewhere about exactly what these charts are and how solid they are, but I haven't had time to look.

And here's something odd: In the same site's US charts thread, they show Rockshow as being #40 on the video sales chart. Is this possible? http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=104691&start=25

New has been officially certified Gold in Japan by the RIAJ for shipment of 100,000 copies. Source: http://www.riaj.or.jp/data/others/gold/201405.html And it is on number 17 on Uruguay charts Source: ukmix

Good to see one of my threads last the distance Come on New keep a chartin

Okay, now that Paul's on the road in the U.S. and has a new video out at the same time, it seems like it's time to revive this thread. In the past, Paul's tours have kept an album on the Billboard 200 even after the initial publicity faded ("Chaos" being the most recent example of that). So, can the tour and video bring "New" back from the dead? I'm going to stick my neck out and say yes. Per HitsDailyDouble, the #50 album last week sold 5,555 copies: http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi . While that's as far down as they go, it seems safe to assume that one can crack the top 200 with significantly fewer sales than that. If just 5% of the crowd at Paul's shows buys the album, and a handful more buy it after seeing the video, that should get the job done -- not top 50, but into the top 200 at least. So I'm going to predict that we will see "New" back in the Billboard chart shortly. Not the chart that comes out this week, most likely, as the first show came right at the end of the week, but very likely next week. If I had to predict where on the chart it would land, I'd say somewhere around #175 or so, give or take a bit. And yeah, that's just a guess, but it's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

This could happen if Paul's team sold New at his shows. But they don't. Why is it that the merchandise tables at Paul's shows don't sell any of his CDs? I suppose it's because the T-shirts generate more revenue than a CD, and some people would buy the $12 CD as a souvenir of the show instead of the $40 T-shirt.
-
Paul's band members sell their albums at Paul's shows, right? I know they have in the past anyway. It makes total sense that you can Brian and Rusty's CDs but not Paul's. Sigh...
-
They should have a suggustion box for some of these obvious ideas. But it would just get filled with "come play here in my town" "I love you" "I saw you..."...oh well. I think Michelly is correct in saying that they probably think people would buy a CD as opposed to a $40 shirt.

Not to be cynical, but perhaps the CDs aren't sold there so that people will be more likely to buy the programs and T-shirts, just to have some souvenir. But still, I think that if the album is ever going to re-chart, it will be during this tour... or if they put out a super-deluxe-bigger-than-Japan CD/DVD set in the US in the fall.
-
Well, from a "real time" perspective , "New" is only #423 on the Amazon charts right now. While that could improve a little as his tour hits additional cities, I don't see a relaunch onto the Billboard Hot 200.
-
It had never occurred to me that the CD wouldn't be for sale at his shows. That's just bizarre. Can folks who've been to the recent concerts confirm this, and tell us if they did anything to facilitate people buying the album? I'm totally dumbfounded by this. While it's certainly likely that some people will be energized enough to go home and buy the album online, or even stop by their "local record shop" where one still exists, but it's not the same as having the sales opportunity when people are in the immediate post-concert glow.

Yes, that was news to me, too. Still, it seems like it takes so little to get onto the Billboard 200 these days. Look at the current chart, awash in hits collections by the likes of Journey, Styx, and Foreigner in the TOP 100, for crying out loud! I attribute some of these collections' success to touring, although in the end, it's possible that Paul's tour does nothing but propel the Beatles' "1" back onto the chart.

Nope, it wasn't for sale in Chicago last night.

I have a feeling they are going to record the Candlestick Park show or maybe even some of the Dodger Stadium show and make that a CD/DVD. I think Paul will change and/or add some NEW things for these shows and they will record it and release it in the fall. Sort of similar to "Good Evening New York City." The U.S. hasn't had anything like that from Paul in a long time and only Japan got the NEW CD/DVD. I think "Paul McCartney: Farewell to Candlestick Park" will be the one for US!
