Incidentally, Elvis was a fair rhythm guitarist, and he even had a couple of bluesy licks that purely his own. However, he actually had a much wider command of the piano than guitar: Elvis playing an impromptu '50s boogie-woogie/early rock & roll-style piano at a '70 Vegas show:
I'm with you!.... And he looked good with the guitar strapped around him in the '68 comeback special!
And sounded good, I should add!

Well, the conclusion we can make out of this all, is that a speed-up Paul sounds like a Rihanna in labor
Haha, good to know!

I really hope this is all just a phase that is over and done with that song. It's not a bad song, BUT he's working with those kind of ... I don't even want to say musicians, let's say entertainers, I always try to avoid. And I don't like that at all.
No doubt! That's what my grandmother said about Elvis.
And mine said it about The Beatles!
I'm lost. They said what about Elvis and The Beatles?
That they were just a phase, and they were not musicians, let's say entertainers... So, about the same thing you said about Kanye and Rihanna
My personal definitions are: Musicians; people who write, play and sing their own songs and don't feel the need for dressing up on stage and performing a dance routine, but are content with playing their instruments and singing. They are (mostly) remembered for their music. Entertainers: people who let write, are usually not seen with an instrument in their hands, need autotune, playback, a dance routine on stage and stage outfits that barely cover their bodies. They are remembered for their outfits, dance moves, bodies, scandals... For instance, when someone says Beatles, a song starts playing in my head. When someone says Kanye I think Kardashians. I'm not saying that "entertainers" are necessarily bad, they are just not my cup of tea
By your definition Elle Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra were not musicians. Yeah. Right.
I would say they were singers not musicians. Musicians play a musical instrument. Probably separate unions. lol Although Louis & Elvis did play instruments.
If you think singing doesn't involve being a musician, you don't know anything about singing.
Yes, your singing voice is a "musical" instrument but that is totally different than say someone like Mr. McCartney who has the ability to play lord knows how many instruments. For example, if you mention the musicians in a Broadway musical, people will think you mean the orchestra not a singer on stage.

Sinatra and Ella were not musicians unless you define musician differently - lol.
Beg to differ here. This could be a whole separate discussion, and should be. A singing voice is a musical instrument. Elvis, Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey...I could go on and on with musicians who did not or do not play an instrument on stage. Their voice is their instrument. Bono and Madonna are two musicians who never played instruments onstage for years before they started playing guitars in concert. Elvis stopped playing guitar in his later concerts. It did not make any of them more or less of a musician.
As I responded to a different post, yes a singing voice is considered a "musical" instrument but that is totally different than someone who has the ability to play multiple instruments like Mr. McCartney for example. The general thought when you say the word musician is not a singer on the stage but the people in the orchestra or band. People will not say Sinatra was a great musician , they will say he had a great voice.

Yuck. I've said I'd really like the song except for the screechy backup volcals while Kayne sings.

I still think it's completely irrelevant to argue who is a musician and who is not a musician. Paul has collaborated with all kinds of people on music: producers, DJs, engineers, songwriters, singers, classical composers, jazz musicians, country musicians, blues musicians. Why not rappers, too? Especially if the rappers are not even rapping? Paul is a celebrity, and he hangs out with celebrities, some of whom happen to be hip-hop artists. They're all going to support each other's projects, and a lot of them have a curiosity about mixing their styles together. Paul has also said that he wanted to write a song commemorating the Ferguson incident. Obviously, this isn't it, but he does have a history of trying to bridge racial gaps, and I think it's great when he shakes things up like this.

Typically, I define a musician as anyone who makes music. Then... ...I remember how much I resent groups like N'Sync, etc. being referred to as "boy bands." If it's not a collective unit of folks playing instruments, it ain't a "band." The same could be said for acts like Three Dog Night. They were not an actual band. But I digress.
But if you had to put them in a given catagory, which is what was being discussed, then they would not go into a musicians group. Musicians vs entertainers/singers. Yes I very well know that they "make" music but say in Nashville...they have back up singers & studio musicians. I guess I need to go & pull out my dictionary.

Basically: Instrumentalists are musicians. And singers are, well, just that: Singers. The two are their own, independent trades in music.

Sorry guys, I really didn't want this to develope into a big discussion. I was just trying to explain myself It all really comes down to the fact that I am being selfish here. I just don't listen to people like Rihanna, etc. because I do not find them to be "musician" enough. Anyone who needs to put on a circus-like show, I am not interested in. I've always been interested in the music itself and the simpler side to it. So all I want (very selfishly) is for this to be a phase for Paul because as a fan who has missed most of his career, it would be nice to have new material that I can listen to with fondness. Not trying to offend anyone, it's just my personal opinion and musical taste.

flamingsachertorte:

That is not a mis-characterization of her. I only buy albums of artists whose stamp and guidance are apparent in the product -- whether it's Elvis Costello or Madonna. Genre is secondary. Although a fellow pop artist like Rihanna, Madonna is the musician of the two. She writes, plays and controls the production. We are hearing her on the records she puts out. I consider anything with Rihanna's name on it, and many other top 40 acts, to be "producer's records."

Fair enough. I can accept that. But not everyone is saying that. Truth be told, Kanye is one of those artists that I can respect for his talents and maybe like a few songs, but I'm not really that into him. Or Rihanna. I can hear them on the radio and enjoy them for what they are, but that's about it. Bruce Springsteen is another one. I mean, if millions of people love him, go ahead, and I'm not gonna say he makes bad music just because he irritates me personally sometimes, or because I don't personally connect with the music. And it would be okay if Paul collaborated with him, even though it wouldn't be my favorite thing. Not trying to put words in your mouth, I'm just speaking generally about what people's reactions seem to be.

Frank Sinatra is indeed thought of as a musician by the people who actually know the type of music he did. For example: Gary Giddins writes of a moment when Sinatra visited the Village Vanguard in New York when Zoot Sims was playing the club. Sims paused and took a moment to introduce the visitor?not as a singer, not as an entertainer, but as "a great musician." That's the way Zoot might have introduced one of his peers in jazz. That's the way most jazzmen consider Sinatra, regardless of how you label his singing: sublime music. http://www.jazzinchicago.org/educates/journal/articles/sinatra-musician

I get it, I really do. When we were all younger, everybody heard the same songs on the radio, and we all knew who all the popular artists were. Nowadays, everything is fragmented. We're all in our own bubbles, listening to what we want. An artist from another genre can have a number one album or a number one single on the Billboard chart, and 95% of the people in the country could have no idea who the heck they are, or have some distorted view based on their celebrity status. It just so happens that Paul broke through those barriers, but a lot of his fans haven't. It's a fact. People feel betrayed because they don't know what's going on. I understand the anger and confusion and frustration. This is totally alien to some people. It's not about who can sing or write songs or play instruments, or how they're dressed or whether they dance in their videos. It's about being an adult with the pressures of daily life, with jobs, kids, bills, aging parents. When you're young, especially a teenager, you have time to absorb all this new stuff, but now, you just don't care. And that's okay. And Paul will perform with Kanye and Rihanna and everything will be fine.
You're right. I don't care. Sunday night I am watching Better Call Saul!
What about when Rihanna joined Coldplay at the 2012 Grammys on "Princess Of China"? It was, unexpectedly for me, one of the best performances of the night. -- just Chris Martin(is that his name?) on guitar and both of them singing. I think this Sunday's performance will be along those lines. Folks are panicking, as if Macca is gonna start human-beat-boxing on stage, or something. I'll grant that Better Call Saul is definitely some darn good tv.
Ok, you are right! I will have the Grammys on in the other room and run in there to check out what is happening!!
