Nice that we're getting back to talking about the single and album and not audiophile minutiae (no offense to those who are passionate about this stuff). So, a few more thoughts about "New" (the song, not the album; I dislike speculating based on no solid information). 1) This is the first McCartney single in ages that I loved on first listening. And after listening to it a couple dozen times now, I still like it a lot. What Paul has produced here is, essentially, a mid-grade Beatles tune. Not a masterpiece, but bright, instantly memorable, and capable of putting a grin on the most jaded of faces -- and yet with just a faint touch of wistfulness under the surface. It's not quite "Penny Lane" quality, but every bit in a league with "Hello Goodbye" or "Your Mother Should Know." I wouldn't want a whole album of tunes like this, but this one song really does bring joy to my heart. 2) Paul gets criticized when he sounds like the Beatles and when he doesn't sound like the Beatles. Pretty much a no-win situation. 3) While Paul definitely doesn't sound like a 28-year-old anymore, his vocal on this tune works great -- and that falsetto remains just bleeping astonishing.
I agree with you. Song just put me in a good mood and I like it instantly. That falsetto was pretty darn good and I liked the Beach Boy style harmony bit. McCarney sometimes worries me with his lyrics but this was fine also, funny how some people thing it is about Lennon and others his wife Nancy. I am looking forward to the release it October.
Bruce, Excellent analysis about "New" (the song). Couldn't agree with you more. Not an "all timer" but a good, solid pop song. Just heard "New" on the radio for the first time. Andre Gardner played it on his Breakfast with the Beatles Show in Philly this morning around 9:00 am. Sounded really nice. Andre (a consumate Beatles' and Paul fan) loves it and thought it sounded right out of 1967/ Magical Mystery Tour era. He also mentioned that Paul put it out quickly because it has a great "Summer" sound. From a Marketing point of view, I think "New" is the perfect song to put out a month and a half before the album release. I don't think that Paul is concerned about "New" charting on the singles market but far more as a preview for album sales in October. That is where he can chart high. While "New" might end up being the "lighest" song on the album (and most Pop oriented), it will in all probability be the most Beatle sounding like. Let's face it... Paul's largest audience to sell albums are Beatle fans. Among them but a much smaller quantity of fans are the hard core Paul fans like most of us on this Site. He has just finished the US and Canada leg of his "OUT THERE" Tour appearing to literally thousands of these Beatle and more casual Paul fans. What perfect timing to release such a Beatle sounding song as "New" as a preview for his new album. The best way to create a buzz for the album is to go after your core audience via the internet and Beatle friendly radion stations. Over the next few weeks you might even hear "New" in offices, convenience stores, doctor offices, supermarkets etc. Since the album is only 6 weeks away, it will then get a 2nd buzz with all the album reviews and sneak previews of more songs from the album. It just makes the most logical marketing sense to go after your core audience first (like they are doing it) to get the initial "buzz" and then hopefully once the album is out, get more "bump" with the secondary markets (i.e. younger generations). Hopefully, the album will have "deeper" songs hitting a variety of genre's (rock, dance, a ballad or two, blues, R&B etc). Can't wait to see. It will be very exciting for the real Paul fans over the next couple of months. Wouldn't it be great for Paul to have a top 5 album just a few months before the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles arriving in America and performing on the Ed Sullivan Show (February 2014.

I'd venture to say that a sizeable percentage of McCartney fans doesn't do downloads. Thus, there's little chance of the song becoming a hit if even the fans won't buy it. Not judging, just stating fact. I'm sure Paul expects that it's the album that has the best chance anyway, or if a single is going to be big, it's not this one. In the Philly radio interview yesterday, he was rather offhand about putting this song out now, while it's still summer, just because it sounds summery and bright.
I don't buy downloads at all and i much prefer the physical CD, but the last time Paul had a CD single was when Chaos was out. I believe that apart from the odd charity single CD singles are no more, more's the pity. I guess the problem these days is that most listen to music on computers, ipods and mp3 players, a decent sounding hi fi set up is a dying thing, sad really. I know vinyl has made a bit of a comeback, but a proper sound system is rarer to see today, unfortunately.
It's an awkward moment, for sure. That compressed, in-your-face sound of MP3s is what young people have come to expect, so they think it sounds good. I accept it as "good enough" for the sake of convenience, but it's no match for CDs and especially vinyl. Problem is that new vinyl albums are ridiculously expensive, something like $23 for "New".
CDs are superior to .mp3 files? I honestly wasn't aware of that. Thanks.
That's enough from you, Mr Audi!
I know my post seemed sarcastic, but I truly thought CD quality was equivalent to mp3 quality.
Well CD sound files are ten times bigger than mp3 files, so they have more... sound definition or whatever the name is . The difference is small thought, and for certain kind of music is not very important.

Does the Band play on the new album and are they singing on the end of NEW song???

Oh, okay! Yeah, MP3s are just a fraction of the info on a CD track.
It's interesting that we're discussing this, as I have recently re-discovered the joy of listening to an album on a physical product. I've gotten back into buying CDs these past few weeks. Listening to an album is a very fulfilling experience, which I'd forgotten -- and now that I know CDs have better audio, I'm REALLY glad now. Thanks!
... and vynil is even better than CD, though, well, vynil is damaged easier than CD.

Paul's Facebook is saying there will be a teaser video tomorrow.

Recently, Paul has been talking about the possibility of performing "an entire album" live in concert. I wouldn't be too surprised if Paul decided to do a couple of "NEW" shows in certain cities "to kick up the excitement another notch". While he didn't play the entire Memory Almost Full album in '07, he did a few dedicated shows when it was released. Can't think of a better way to promote it!!

I kind of agree with you. My audiophile thing problem is "autotune" or similars and I'm worried the new album will be something with as much autotune as Good Evening New York City, I hope not, but it can happen. (And if happen it will only bother to a few, I know... :lol About 1)... I've kind of rated the song the same as you, not as good as Penny Lane but better than Your Mother Should Know, maybe equal to Hello Goodbye. 2) I think sometimes Paul McCartney is sometimes criticized for... sounding like Paul McCartney, lol. A little bit absurd but well... I feel like Rolling Stone is not gonna like this new single... and will be treated somehow as the Frog Chorus or so... certainly the end reminds too of We All Stand Together. It is probably the kind of single that would be received the worst by Rolling Stone, so it kind of proofs Paul doesn't care about criticism. And it almost made my wish come true wishing he'll do something like "The Frog Chorus Revisited" as single And maybe concert opener.... 3) I don't think Paul sounds old... if "New" is showed to someone that doesn't know it's Paul McCartney I don't think they're gonna guess the singer there is 71 at all... I would say 40 or so.

I can be wrong but the very first notes of the song sound to me not exactly like intro but like a way to "blend" with the previous song on the album. I mean like happened in Sgt Pepper and The White Album where was no silence between most of the songs but a little music link...
-
re"About 1)... I've kind of rated the song the same as you, not as good as Penny Lane but better than Your Mother Should Know, maybe equal to Hello Goodbye. 'New" is a good contemporary song but lets not get carried away. "New" doesnt hold a candle to "Hello Goodbye" or "YMSK" in terms of melodic complexity & originality. John would have laughed it away as simple "granny music".

John didn't like much Ob-la-di Ob-la-da either, he just didn't like that style from Paul. Well, I don't pay much attention to "melodic complexity or originality", I just feel the music. There are melodies that are not complex but are some of the best ever. And some that are not very original and are some of the best ever. And then there are some ultra-complex melodies that are very boring. I don't know... The riff of Satisfaction is very very simple but it is fantastic. Music is like that, more complex doesn't mean better.

Well John's opinions on Paul's music aren't something i really agree with completely, especially as he was quite myopic concerning Paul towards the end of the Beatles. Also there's room for "granny music" in any career, variety is the spice of life. I think "New" is a good song and is a memorable tune, but i wouldn't name check it with any Beatles tune.

Hey, anyone else do some Sherlock Holmes analyzing of the instagram photo Paul posted? I looks like the NEW logo itself is hollow, a cutout, of white posterboard, and there is a photo underneath. At first look, it just looks like white glare from a camera flash. Hmmm...but no...replace the white with a dark color, blow it up a bit, and the photo is more apparent. To me it looks like someone taking Paul's photograph. That's my guess. Here's the backup for my guess: Podgie's Photo Capture- Click Here Any other thoughts? Or guesses? Hoping for a good preview tomorrow. On Friday, Pearl Jam announced the full track listing of their new album, which comes out the same day as Paul's.

Anyone see the tab on this yet? Guitar, bass or uke?
Off the top of my head the chords are something like.. verse; C , C/Bb, C/A , C/Ab , C/G , G G, G#dim , Am , Dm , C, G, C, G Mid 8 ; F, Dm , Am, G x2 I played it at an acoustic gig I did on Friday, but I don't have a guitar handy, so I'm just thinking of the chords in my head. There may be a few in the wrong order or just plain inacurate ! Hope their useful in some way...
