My ratings are McCartney - 8 out of 10 Ram - 9 Wild Life - 4 Red Rose Speedway - 8 Band On The Run - 8 Venus and Mars - 7.5 Speed of Sound - 7.5 London Town - 6.5 Back To The Egg - 6.5 McCartney II - 6 Tug Of War - 8 Pipes Of Peace - 5 Press To Play - 1 Flowers In The Dirt - 7.5 Off The Ground - 5.5 Flaming Pie - 6 Driving Rain - 5 Chaos and Creation - 6 Memory Almost Full - 7 Electric Arguments - 2 New - 1
Well, at least there are some highlights for you after "Tug Of War". I was expecting all 1's!
He/She is the only won on the planet earth that would think "New" deserved a grade of 1 and EA a grade of 2.
EA was what it was, a mish mash of sounds, melodies, experimental. I totally get it and I judge it on it's relative merits. New on the other hand has been recorded as a commercially viable record and from what I've heard it fails miserably as an album. The only song that I like is New, In my opinion it's his worst effort to date fractionally behind Press To Play.

That is fine, I have already said you are entitled to your opinion and never said you were wrong. I just stated you are probably the only one who would rate "New" and "EA" that poorly including rock critics who don't like McCartney. Just curious if you have the time, rate Lennon solo works for me.

Lennon's early works like 1970 and Imagine are by far his best solo work. Of course he's had his moments on his other albums but the two albums I've mentioned are far and away his best work since the Beatles. They are the equal of Ram and McCartney.

This will have to do for now. I keep telling myself, "You're getting 15 new McCartney tracks tomorrow. You can wait a bit for the 16th one!"
-
OMG, I'm on my 4th listen of the 'New' album, I just love the whole thing. I'd heard some songs on the internet and was already loving what I heard, but today I'm listening on much better speakers than my laptop and it is soooooo great! I'm too busy listening to it to give a 'proper' review but it's a McCartney Masterpiece! It's sincerely one of his best albums. I love the melodies, lyrics, instruments. I hope Paul never stops putting out new albums.

Pic of the postcards and art laminate which came in the Best Buy exclusive. The other side of the laminate has the pink/orange NEW cover as well as Paul's signature logo. Also, slight mixup with the work schedule means I get to listen to the album now and not have to wait until later!
Thanks! Does it have the bonus tracks?
Yes it does, very happy about that as I previously thought I'd have to wait to hear the two bonus tracks until I got my Japanese CD. That one should be shipped on Friday from Miami (I'm in DC), and it is going to be hard to wait (I know the track is 'out there' already on YouTube, etc.) to hear Struggle, but it will help spread out the "new album" excitement for me. Turns out theoriginal clerk at FYE didn't do a real "pre-order", just rang it up as a regular sale and when I went to pick up my standard copy today they were sold out. : Really glad I already got the cube the other day as that was most likely an accident! The clerk said they had only received 3 or 4 but that they should have some more coming in shipment this week. I hope that gives some other fans a chance at getting one of the cubes.

Some of the recording sessions for the new "NEW" album were done at the Henson Recording Studios, that use to be A&M Records, that use to be Red Skelton/CBS Studios that was ORIGINALLY use to be The Charlie Chaplin Studios on LaBrea Avenue in Hollywood, Ca. Also at Abbey Road #2' Hog Hill Mill, AIR Studios (George Martin's hangout) and a bunch of other great studios.

Not THE Steve Martin was on this album......Hmmmm....

I got my copy of NEW today and the light cube...of course I get the one cube that doesn't work! I had reserved my cube at my local shop on Friday, and when I went today the guy gave me the one randomly sitting on the counter. When I said I'd reserved one, he said "oh!" and opened the drawer where they were and I saw the one with my name on it. Then he said "ah, someone else can have that one" and tossed the counter one in my bag. Got home and...nothing. No light. And I'm sure they're all sold out now (there were only 2 copies of NEW left on the racks when I was there and I saw THREE people ahead of me in line buying it!).

Just listened to it! Yay! (Ended up listening on my own, first time for a new McCartney album since "Flaming Pie"?) I listened to the standard CD so I would get an impression of "the album" as Paul saw it. And I really geeked out, realizing that there were six settings on the cube, and 12 songs, so I changed the cube setting for each track, i.e. wild strobing for "Save Us" and "Appreciate", flashing red for "Queenie Eye" and "I Can Bet" and so on. (OK, I cheated a bit and didn't leave the strobing on for an entire song, lest it would cause a neurological issue!) It worked surprisingly well! The production was even more modern than I expected, but in a good way. The producers took what's best from current innovators and ignored the rest. Certainly diverse, that's for sure! I was surprised at how much I liked "Alligator," "Appreciate," and "Road." Great textures on those songs, really unusual for Paul, but it works, and the bass on "Road" is stunning! "Everybody Out There" is a big highlight for me, and "Save Us" is much better in this version, with the pounding piano underneath, and the "aw aw aw" part is very cool (Paul should stand back from the microphone when they do this part live, really. :wink "Scared" is breathtaking, can't believe how beautiful that is. I'll try to give a track-by-track after a few more listens, but that's my first impression!

Did you pull the tab out of the battery slot? I thought mine was defective at first, and I actually went back and the clerk showed me.
-
I opened up the battery compartment and all that was in there were the batteries. And the on/off button was pushed in too far so I had to use a toothpick to press it. Nothing. Maybe the batteries are dead? I suspect it was either the "broken one" or the demo one that had dead batteries. Hopefully I can get it to work. Oh well, at least I've got it, I suppose!

Warming to the album... I'm enjoying the two bonus tracks - Turned Out and Get Me Out of Here. Ditch On My Way To Work and Hosanna, and replace them with these two bonus tracks, and you have a solid album.
-
Got my copy of the deluxe cd (since I am getting the standard edition on vinyl). Also got a cube and put my name on the big ol album cover display! So that should be mine if no one tosses it or anything. If you are in LA and looking for a place to buy the cd with a cube, go to Fingerprints in Long Beach. They still have some. But don't you be snatching my promo poster!
-
Got my copy today too!! Was so excited to get it!! A new McCartney album is such an event, isn't it?? I began listening to a bit of it, sounds great so far!! When I log off of here, I will sit down with my headphones and listen to it completely I know it will be good

Sounds like most of the cubes were bought by people on this forum! Listened to the deluxe version. I like the flow of the standard album better. "Road" is a nice ending, with "Scared" as a great epilogue. The other two tracks are great but belong somewhere else. It occurs to me that he could do an entire album in the style of "Get Me Out of Here" and it would suit him perfectly! I won't lie: hearing the quality of his voice on "Early Days" and "On My Way To Work" initially depressed me a bit, but really it's quite appropriate since he is an old guy looking back at his youth. No one criticized Johnny Cash for sounding his age. And they're both just charming songs; I really got into them the second time.

I think having his voice sound his age as you put it helps the feel that those early days he is singing about really were quite some time ago. Same for On My Way to Work. As for Get Me Out of Here, that is brilliant and sounds so bluesy. I like those words, how many times have I thought "Get Me Out of Here" in the midst of something like a boring meeting, putting up with an unpleasant person or whatever.

Pretty impressive that he's able to look backwards and forwards on the same album so convincingly.
