And to top if off Kanye seems to be Paul's BFF with his presence at that fashion thing last week odd...Wow. My first thought was "hey, this is actually not a bad song" but then wow the lyrics Goes well beyond the use of the n word, some parts there seem to be seriously disturbing. Is Paul seriously calling this "urban poetry"?. Oh well. Any hip hop song I've heard in Spanish (while still not a genre I'm a fan of) has very different lyrics, social and trying to promote positive change, social or personal...

Anyway, it's not Paul's place really to judge whether Kayne might be subconsciously self-loathing.
I don't think it's his place either. That doesn't mean he had to participate.
BTW, the Lohan story is indeed ridiculous.
It is ridiculous that she thought assumed a casual access to the word in this day and age. parlance
There is a casual use of the word nowadays, for good or bad. One has to distinguish the intent. I don't think Paul thinks the lyrics are a big deal at all really. Remember a while ago he defended Eminem over criticism of his lyrics (don't remember what the specific criticism was, that they were violent maybe), Paul said the it's just showbiz, as in nothing to take too seriously. Doubt his opinion here is any different.

I'm not sure overall hip hop culture has a great influence on people anyway.
It may not have had an obvious impact on you or your immediate circle, but it's had a huge impact around the world. A 2 second search on Google goes immediately to this Wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop#Effects At any rate, it's saddening and disturbing that people with little awareness of the history of the word use it casually. It's not just a minor slur that a few people get butthurt over. It's a word with a violent and deadly history. There might have been a moment when reclaiming the word had some value, but that lost its power decades ago. parlance
Well, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about... I doubt they have little awarenss of the history of the word... they just consider that they're using it differently. I doubt it's a good idea, but I don't think the criticism should go beyond its appropiateness and into ethics when the intent is clear. And especially try to make a bigger moral criticism merely because of the race of the person involved. Mind you, any political intent to reclaim the word is possibly gone by now so the use is probably merely casual.

This is ridiculous. Why is it allowed for anyone then?
Apparently it's ok for him to call Paul the n word. He tweeted this March 1st: KANYE WEST @kanyewest · Mar 1 YOU ARE A LEGEND, A GREAT FRIEND, AND RESPECTFULLY EVEN THOUGH YOU WHITE ONE OF THE REALEST NIGGAS ALIVE

But then you get people like Rush Limbaugh claiming now that whites who use that word to discriminate against blacks (as in the fraternity guys on that bus) probably just heard black rappers use it and thought it was okay. That is certainly too far, right? Whites get a free pass to use the n-word because black people said it, making blacks responsible for racist chants and discrimination against blacks? As you've said, that discrimination goes back way, way, way before rap ever existed! I do have to wonder if "All Day" was the song Limbaugh was thinking of when he said this.
Which is why the word should not be used at all and disposed of in the dust bind of history.
Totally agree. One thing I detest is the 'ole double standard.

I'm no expert, but it would seem that putting the a at the end of the word turns it into a compliment. Still not comfortable with it though.

If people don't want their children to use the f word, then they don't use the f word. It's that simple. Everybody knows that. Lohan used it because she said Kanye is a friend and he used it so she thought it was all right. Then she had to delete her tweet and APOLOGIZE. Case in point. Just because he's spelling it the way he apparently pronounces it doesn't make it the nice version of the n word. It's clear what he's saying. I think he's exhibiting racism by using it and arrogantly displaying that the rules don't apply to him. He's above that in his own mind.

Not saying I agree with it, just saying that appears to be the mentality.

As Balthasar said, "Note this before my notes, there's not a note of mine that's worth the noting."

Same word, but clearly different meaning and intent. There is worse in the lyrics of the song.

There are WORSE words? So that is your criteria for it being ok??

In its second week on the chart, the song drops from #15 to #51. Kanye is now saying that the Brit Awards performance is the official video for the song, but it's unclear whether the professionally-shot video will actually come out or not, as it was supposed to.

Ah, so there it was, finally a song with rapping and they even got the word ***** in there. Now you can relax Paul, 'been there, done that'.
Actually, he should be ashamed of himself. Constantly tells the story of the meaning of "Blackbird" being about the Civil Rights struggle and then is part of a song that uses the N word constantly, that is hypocritical IMO.
but it's a black man using the N-word. So it's okay
