KOTB charting

U.S. sales won't be out till next week, but the Hits Daily Double site, which usually is pretty good on these things, thinks KOTB will sell 65,000-70,000 units the first week, which -- if their guesses on other albums are right -- will have it come in around #5: http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news08852m01 They post their sales chart as the numbers come in Monday and Tuesday each week, a couple days before Billboard's comes out, and the two usually track pretty closely. "My Valentine" continues to inch up the AC airplay chart, now at #23 per Mediabase.

iTunes: Top downloaded track from KOTB: "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter." That's right, neither the single getting considerable AC airplay or the other single with the "celebrity" guest, but the opening track. Maybe its because of the album title? :

Still selling well on Amazon and iTunes UK, might just hold on to the number 3 spot over here. In the US looks like Van Halen, Adele, The Fray and Now 41 (not sure if it counts on the main chart?) are selling better so looking set for 5 or 6 over there. How do sales through Paul's site get added to sales figures?

No4 on HMV chart

In Canada KOTB was #3 on iTunes yesterday , today he's #4 just behind Adele , but I'm sure the concert tonight will boost iTunes sales..... He's also #2 on amazon just behind Adele . I think the majority of people buying this album are gonna get it from retail stores

You know every time I look at these chart numbers I realize how terrible the CD market is. Leonard Cohen's new album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard chart this week. You know how many copies it sold? 41,000. That's it. For an album of original songs that got very strong reviews all over the place. I guess it's no wonder that none of these artists rush to put out CDs every year, with sales like that. I think Paul will be somewhere in the top 10 but that's not saying much these days.

Shocking isn't it? They're projecting around 70,000 for Paul in the US.

70,000 is pretty optimistic. And I mean "pretty optimistic" as in an unrealizable goal. Also I wonder how the public will respond in general? 5 years since his last new true record (forget Ocean Kingdom), but I wonder if people will embrace this project or reject the aesthetics by hand?

How did Rod Stewart's standards albums sell so well, then. Market better then? Didn't have I-Tunes and I-Pods and such, then? And burning copies, illegal downloading, etc. Did Rod's standards stuff come out that long ago, before all this?

McCartney & Van Halen both at the top of the album charts...Is this the late 70s & early 80s again!!
Brilliant! real music returns to it rightfull place at the top of the charts again!
that's when I say "I told you so" this is only a guess but if Leonard Cohen is #1 in Spain then Paul can be the next #1. And it's not a rock and roll album, you know.

It was produced better Susy! the target was not only the fans of Rod Stewart... we all love Paul and will listen a lot to his new album, but it has many weak points to represent a Standard album to people outside Paul's fans. I wont mention them here as it was talked about a lot on many threads. I'm sorry and sad for that fact.

That's not a fact, it's your opinion. Paul's record was never going to be a No. 1. It's not that kind of a record. Rod Stewart's albums were a cheesy, generic, Vegas style approach that more easily appeals to the masses (unfortunately). Paul's record is spare and elegant and subtle (except for the title ). It's a cool jazz approach. And when was the last time ANY cool jazz record was a top 10 billboard hit? So if Paul gets into the top 10 with this album, that'll be great. FYI, Rod's first Songbook album was No. 4 in the US and No. 8 in the UK. The later Songbook records he released did better. His second Songbook album was even No. 1 in the U.S. It seems the worse the records got, the better they sold. Typical. By contrast, Paul's is a classy, elegant affair. Thank goodness.

Right but you forget that Paul's much bigger than Rod in every musical comparison, so we don't look for equaling Rod

Sure but a large chunk of Paul's fan base isn't interested in standards and isn't going to buy this record. They want Paul to release an album of original material. Meanwhile, Rod's fans don't expect any original material from him; these Songbook records are all they get so they buy it.

from Beatlefan..Billboard reports that McCartney's "Kisses on the Bottom" looks likely to crack next week's album Top 10 with 70,000 in sales. # 6
