Listening to Pipes of Peace album again, I got a certain charge or rush from hearing "The Man" duet with Michael Jackson, a song I'd not previously paid attention to, really. I wonder what the subject of "The Man" is. Does anyone know what it's about? Couldn't quite grasp it Although rather 80's sounding, there's still some pleasing things to me about that song. I enjoyed it.

I always kinda liked this song, one of the few on PoP that I don't mind listening to.

About the only thing I recall liking from "Pipes of Peace" was the gorgeous ballad, "So Bad". One could count on Paul for coming up with a song you just loved...regardless of the overall album. And his voice was so still so pure!! Would have to listen to the album again...now...to see if anything jumps out. It was released right after the excellent "Tug of War," which I loved, so it was likely going to be a letdown regardless.

It's my favourite of all the duets with Wacko.

I don't care for this song at all, but Suzy brings up a good point. I'm always amazed at finding songs that I overlooked on McCartney LPs that I find later to be real gems. It's nice to rediscover 'lost' McCartney songs.

I don't think it's really about anyone in particular. I figure it's just a generically optimistic song, imagining a man that could be totally carefree and how wonderful that would be. I always found it far too vague and too sweet for my tastes. I hate to say, but it's actually one of the small handful of songs at the very bottom of his catalogue for me!

Paul lost a lot of street cred by doing the commercially successful duets with Stevie & Jackie. Especially after the wonderfully bizare MII. Probably 1 of the worst career moves he could make.

Yep, that and collecting all the leftovers from Tug Of War and releasing them as the album Pipes Of Peace! ...only to be followed by Broadstreet...a very bad sequence right there.

When i bought the album i want dissapointed nor was i excited hell i was 2 year younger than chris mum. You hear the phrase an ablum of it's time, and this is one, a macca weakness in my mind, in that he played to the critics and the current top ten sound. A line or two could have made the number one song from being well a xams song to a classic anti war song. The video which probably propelled it to the no1 spot none pauls fan told me it was great i disaggreeed. Even the blessed ann (discipline of elvis) liked it, She only got it right with SILLY LOVE SONGS songs but hell i was male nd 16 when it came out; though had stopped reading the MM (medoldy maker and NMW - new musical express - due to even though being at a secondary modern did own a dictornary and christ they didnt make sense). Vocals great thoug i aint6 played it in years now about too. It was well worth the £3050-£4 i spent on it at thetime.

I know the song but had to have a listen

I don't really get the lyrics about 'the man', lyrics could be better IMO and I do not like the sound of that buzzy lead guitar.. but its a really good melody, good tune. Those guys could write the shit out of music. the awesome talent does come through in the song for me. ..but which one of them got started writing on that theme of the man.. I don't really get that.

its like trying to catch the sun on the water..
