THE NEXT DELUXE/REMASTERED ALBUM FROM PAUL
-
It's Saturday and I am enjoying the 2 CD's (Remastered Full CD and the Original Demos with Paul and Elvis). For anyone who already has their original Flowers in the Dirt CD and are debating to get the remaster, I would just say this. The 2nd CD alone makes this purchase very worth it. To me, it's the best 2nd CD of any Remaster he has done so far. What I love is that it is just Paul and Elvis and they are full, finished songs. Makes you wonder why Paul didn't include a couple more of these on the finished Studio CD. Regardless, it's great to get them now. As I said earlier, getting the 2 CD Set at either Best Buy or Target is definitely a great value.

So "P.S. Love Me Do" is nowhere in the deluxe set? I remember the Japanese 2-disc set of FITD had that, as well as a version of "The Long and Winding Road". I see some of the other bonuses (Party Party, Loveliest Thing, etc.). Still on the fence with it. I love what I got with the Best Buy 2-cd set, but the deluxe set does look very cool!

Do you mean the retail price was $90.99 and then you got $50 off with the gift card?! If so, that is the best price I've heard! But if total cost was $140.99, you got ripped off.

Going to get the vinyl deal, I hope

I'm quite glad that PS Love Me Do isn't on it. Would ruin a great release

Awww I always really liked how Paul put those two songs together. Thought it was pretty smart of him... and I enjoy that one...

Got the deluxe Archive set yesterday and have sampled some of it. The acoustic demos sound crystalline, just superb, and the addition of "That Day Is Done" is very nice there. That disc ends with an unlisted track of the "The Lovers That Never Were" demo with a few overdubs (like piano) on it, very cool. I wonder if that appears on the 2CD set, too. But wow, the band demos! We were just enraptured listening to these, it's almost like "the collaborative album that never was." The core band on each track is Paul and Hamish and Chris Whitten, with Kevin Armstrong on guitar on some tracks, and Elvis on some tracks doing vocals and guitar. While you can hear Elvis's voice on those tracks, they put Paul front and center, and it's so thrilling to me to hear his lead vocal on "So Like Candy" and "Playboy To A Man"! The band arrangements are not as elaborate as on the released versions of these tunes, but still they are more developed than I expected, particularly "Tommy's Coming Home." This demo of "You Want Her Too" is the clear basis of the released version, but so much less fussy, focusing more on the vocal interplay between Paul and Elvis. For the "Don't Be Careless Love" band demo, all they took from it was the vocal, which I had always found somewhat repellent, to be honest, but somehow it sounds miles better on this demo, again with a less fussy arrangement. None of the other demos seem to have made it to the finished project in any form, but each one has solid musicianship, not just "run-throughs" at all. The odd thing is that there are clearly keyboards on some of these tracks, but there is no musician credit for them, except for one listing Paul playing piano, but there is obviously more than that. (Not saying they sound like they were added recently; they sound totally like they were done at the time, including a bit of organ.) The 21-minute "Paul and Elvis" video is all clips of the two of them in the studio, running through and recording several tracks. Paul does considerably more clowning than Elvis, who looks more like he just wants to get down to business. During one sequence, Elvis is seen putting down a lead vocal for a version of "My Brave Face," another thrilling moment for me, as a huge Elvis fan. (No contemporary interviews or any narration.) Then there's a 7-minute video of various other recording session moments, focusing a lot on the producers, including Trevor Horn. One thing I'll say is that the role of his bandmates on this whole set is played WAY down compared to the promotion at the time. It doesn't seem that they had any involvement in the reissue at all, as far as I can tell. You do get a bit of Hamish clowning with his angel wings in the "This One" making-of documentary. The coolest thing in that doc is Paul sitting outdoors intricately explaining the photographic process that creates the effects in the video; he understands and conveys it strikingly well. We've only watched a couple of the videos so far, and we haven't listened to the remastered main album, but I looked through the books and booklets. Nice presentation, as usual, and the outer cover is stunningly gorgeous with that shimmery quality. Still, I'm a bit dismayed that one entire booklet is taken up by various alternate shots of that cover, with very little text. I haven't read the main book yet, but it doesn't seem to have as extensive interviews with Paul as some other sets, just quotes scattered through the new essay. There are some reprints of text that came out in Club Sandwich from the time. Of course, there are many great photos in it, though, including shots of George Martin, Phil Ramone, and the Cars' Greg Hawkes (producing "Motor Of Love"). The usual Coming Soon card is replaced by a card that says "Other titles available in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection," with pics of the album covers. On the other side, maddeningly, it says to check out the website "for more information on forthcoming releases." I didn't mean to write so much, but there you go! There are certainly things to criticize about this set, but there's also a lot to love. I won't tell anyone that the price is justified, but I'm happy to have this anyway. Not happy about the download situation either, but I'll do those today sometime. Can't wait to hear those "cassette demos," which are totally unheard up to now, as far as I know. Cheers, and bash away!
I should add that I've read some of the main book, and there actually are quotes from Robbie and Hamish, as well as a lot from Elvis Costello. We watched all the music videos. I have to say I'm not a big fan of most of these. I think the problem is there are just so many band members and they try to focus on all of them, and it gets distracting. Speaking of which, "Distractions" is one of the better ones, just focusing on Paul. I had never seen that one before. I got all the downloads yesterday. A bit annoying, as not only do they strongly recommend downloading each track individually, but the window to scroll through is so tiny. HOWEVER, those "cassette demos" are fantastic, even with some distortion on "Mistress And Maid." So cool to hear "I Don't Want To Confess," a song I have never heard in any form before. Yes, that is odd that they left off "P.S. Love Me Do" and "The Long And Winding Road," not to mention the alternate "Rough Ride." Not like they needed to, ahem, save space on a disc!

I absolutely love the So Like Candy and My Brave Face demos. Makes me wonder if Paul originally wanted to put So Like Candy on his album instead of Mighty Like A Rose.

Usually in these sets they announce what's upcoming, but this time they didn't - just go to Paul McCartney.com. Since he seems to be going in chronological order, skipping over a few albums, I wonder what will be next. I'm disappointed he skipped over "Londontown" and "Press to Play," in particular. My guess for what's next, if there is one, will be "Flaming Pie," which is the last record that included contributions from Linda.
-
I think Flaming Pie will almost certainly be next

Not sure about the chronological order. Didn't RAM come after "Band on the Run"? And didn't Wings Over America" come before "Venus and Mars" and "Wings At the Speed of Sound"? "McCartney II" even came before all of them, if I remember correctly. The chronology of the original albums doesn't seem to have much influence on the order of the re-releases.

Quite correct, but I also agree that "Flaming Pie" is likely to be next. It's an album Paul is proud of, and it is still out of print at this point. I can't imagine WL/RRS/LT or BTTE being a bigger priority for him, since he is ambivalent about all those albums. Of course, this is assuming that the series will continue the way it has been, which is not at all certain.

Baffling incompleteness ??? First off, not one Archive is absolutely complete. You can argue that such and such should have been included, not included and so on and so forth. These sets have not been defined as the complete story by Paul or his people. The only unrealistic expectations have been set by fans who surplants their own dreams, wishes, wants or expectations on the sets. The define the words archives or collections or deluxe in their own definitions as to fit their very weak arguments that they know better. I am a fan too, and as a fan, I always want more or everything I can get. But I stand a realistic one and am quite thankful that he's still releasing these things. Been listening to the audio for almost two months now and it still haven't left my players. I am quite happy with the set

Well, my two cents. As I have stated earlier, never was a big fan of FITD; the remastered two CD set I picked up yesterday at Best Buy hasn't really changed my mine; will still skip over Rough Ride, You Want Her Too, Distractions, Don't Be Careless Love and Ou Est Le Soleil. The remaining tunes are really, really solid and I love listening to them. And Squid, I LOVE How Many People and Motor of Love; Paul's voice in these two songs is perfect. Are they great songs? Probably not, but they sound wonderful. Now to the bonus 'original demos'; well, not a fan of Elvis Costello at all! Thank goodness Paul released his solo version of My Brave Face! And the rest of the bonus tunes were fine, but I hardly belief I will listen to them again. Ever. Really upset that Flying to My Home wasn't included; a great, great song with a definite Wings vibe. Patiently waiting for Red Rose Speedway and Back To The Egg remasters.

How can they be on your set if they're download only?
