My set came on Monday, but didn't have time to do anything but take the shrink wrap off! Tomorrow (actually now today) will be out and about and listen in the car. What's the deal with the "cassette demos" that are listed as download only? (I Don't Want To Confess, Shallow Grave, Mistress And Maid)
The downloads are what everyone has been complaining about. It would have been nice if they came on a cd but you can burn them to disc.
I know, but these are listed separately from the 13 B-sides, remixes and single edits. I thought there were more downloads, but I guess there is only a total of 16. ETA: Are the cassette demos the ones you can get on Record Store Day?

There is a yellow card that comes with the deluxe set that tells you how to do that. You have to buy the deluxe set as the code can only be used once. Has to be done on a PC/laptop, not an iPad.

Yes, just those 3 songs. On a cassette. http://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/9527

Hi - I just assumed that Wix played on Flowers in the Dirt. However, he's not credited on the new remaster or indeed on the original. Did he join the band after the recording just in time for the tour? Or are there "contractual" reasons for his name not appearing?
-
Wix is most definitely all over FITD. I have not yet purchased an Archive Collection edition, but I know he is well-credited on the original pressing.

Just bought the two CD set earlier this afternoon (still in the shrink wrap)...will give my impressions of disc two later on...but I had to say that I feel like a bit of a sucker since is the 6th copy of this album that I have purchased: Both the cassette and CD configurations when it first came out The world tour boxed set edition (came with party party CD single) Two CD Japanese set The 'Paul McCartney Collection' version And now this archive version Also bought pretty much every CD single associated with this album (My brave face, this one, put it there and figure of eight. And if I'm forgetting one or two, probably those too...lol) I Hope this disk of demos makes it worth it
____________________________________________________ I hear you Rich n. At the end of the day, we are just hard core (and sometimes crazy) fans that probably spend too much money on Macca. I do think you will be pleased with Disc 2. At least they are not snippets (which I hate) and they are complete songs. Hope you got the 2 CD set at a real good price. The 2 best that I saw was Target and Best Buy.

No, he isn't. There is no mention of Wix on the original LP, although he is on the photo on the back of the lyrics insert. The only credited keyboard players are Trevor Horn, Mitchell Froom and Greg Hawkes.

I know that everyone is waiting for my Track by Track review (I'm kidding!) so after several days of listening to the 2017 Remaster, here goes. Let me just add that time has surely gone by...I had not listened to the original CD in full in many years. Grading guide (1-10 with 10 being very good to near perfect) My Brave Face (10) One of Paul's best album openers and one of the best of the Paul/Elvis Collaborations. Love the way the vocal just jumps out at you. Very clever song "title" with nice vocal and harmonies by Paul and Hamish. Sounds quite Beatlesque with reminiscent British invasion guitar sounds. Rough Ride ( While some can feel (and I don't totally disagree) this track is overproduced with 80's production, I personally don't find it offensive, however. I really like Paul's vocal and the way the middle verse changes direction with the "I'm not asking for an easy passage". I also like the horns in the last section that give it an R&B/funky flavor. Sounds better than what I remember from long ago. Decent to good track. Over the years, I have liked many Paul songs that use horns prevalently. You Want Her Too (9) This Paul/Elvis collaboration also sounds quite a bit better than I remember. I like the way Paul and Elvis trade the vocal lines reminiscent of Paul and John's yin-yang thing on some songs back in the Beatle days. I also like the intro keyboards and the similar ending with the end orchestration. This reminded me of the way Paul and George Martin ended Take it Away. I don't personally feel the song is overproduced. I like the production. Distractions (10) The next 4-5 songs begins the peak of the album for me. I remember liking this track in the late 80's but hearing this remaster (and maybe because I've gotten considerably older) gives me a much fuller appreciation. The jazz orchestration by Clare Fisher (a guy by the way) is terrific and Paul's vocal is excellent for the song. Must be one of Paul's most underrated songs. Finally, I love the lyrics that people can really relate to. We Got Married (10) Loosely autobiographical about Paul and Linda's marriage but I think any couple who have had an enduring life story can really relate as well. Love the rhyming Paul does with the lyrics...dream & team, bad & glad, bets & regrets, life & wife etc. Also a phrase like "meeting of the minds. Love the music also and the ending verse...It's Not just a loving machine" giving it some R&B flavor. Great guitar work also by David Gilmore and the vocal & harmonies by Paul and team are terrific. Put It There (10) 2 minutes of music bliss to my ears. Again great lyrics where Paul uses an expression his Dad used to develop this beautiful song. This Father-Son song could just as easily be a Parent-Child song. Love the 2nd verse line..."If there's a fight, I'd like to fix it". What parent hasn't felt this need. One of the reasons that I think FITD is easily one of Paul's better albums is that these last 3 songs are close to perfect. Figure of 8 (9.5) At this juncture of FITD, the album needed a "rock-oriented" song and here, in my opinion, he delivers. Again, not hearing the album cut in a long while, it sounds even better than I remember. Another very clever song title where Paul uses the visuality of the title to "Avoid slipping back off the straight and narrow". The lyrics give "life lessons" in a 3 minute song. Also love Paul's raspy vocals and the way the melody totally changes direction with the "well figure it out for yourself little girl verse". I would have given it a 10 except I think the ending of the studio version could have been a little better but overall I really like the song...both lyric and music. This One (9.5) Another really good up-tempo song where Paul continues the message he started with his Here Today Song from Tug of War. Here Today specifically talks about John where this is a general message to lovers or friends..."There never could be a better moment than this one, this one". Like Robbie's Electric guitar and Hamish Stuart's 2nd vocal and harmonies. _______________________________________________ I will continue. You would think that FITD would be his greatest album at this point, but Paul unfortunately in my opinion gets off this great track in the 2nd half. To be continued.

No doubt we spend our money...LOL. And yeah, that disc 2 is well worth the another FITD venture

Have to admit that while the album version of Figure of 8 was probably too 'soft' (for lack of better terms) for live action (had the live arrangement remained true to the album version), I like that version far better than the more driving live and single versions of this song...Admittedly, the live version worked very well in the 'moment'... But overall, the only two songs on this album that I'm not too keen on is Don't Be Careless Love and Ou Est Le Soleil. I even like the much maligned Motor of Love...but on the flip side, there are no songs on this album that ascend into my favorite top 20 macca songs...i,e very solid album, but with no exceptionally strong highlight...but the album as a whole is a top 10 macca album on my list (though I must note, near the bottom of that top 10 list)

2nd Half of FITD (continued) For some reason my grade on Rough Ride did not come through...I would give it a 7 or 7.5 Don't Be Careless Love (7) I actually like this song better on this Remaster than my first exposure when the album initially was released. At that point, I would have to skip it but now it does sound better. I like the melody and the lyrics which being on the "dark" side was good for FITD. What doesn't make this a very good or great track is Paul's lead vocal. I noticed that on the Demo (on CD 2) that Paul and Elvis start the song in a must lower key. That could make the song a tad dreary on those verses but Paul to me starts the song in too high of a key. It makes the lead vocal sound too grating to my ears although as a big fan I have gotten somewhat used to it. Maybe I didn't give the song any chance years ago but in my opinion, Paul's lead vocal would not endear casual McCartney fans to the song. The rest of the song I like but as a whole it is still my least favorite collaboration by far on FITD. I like the way Paul speeds up the other verses and the way he sings (as well as Elvis and Hamish) the harmonies. It has a R&B flavor which I also like. Just wished someone would have told him he should do it in a lower key. An ok track but could have been much better in my opinion. That Day is Done (9.5) Another one of my favorite Paul/Elvis collaboration. This one "cries out" to be done live by Paul. I understand why he didn't do "That Day is Done" on the Flowers tour in 1989 since he did so many songs from the album but why not in 2002 when he wasn't promoting a new album at the time. That Day is Done has a terrific gospel /Let It Be feel to it with the melody and lyrics being that good. I remember how great Let It Be sounded the first time I heard it live in 1989. I thought it sounded better "live" than the studio versions. The spontaneity that this type of song can bring to a live performance could really lift the status of such an unappreciated song in Paul's catalog and in 2002 Paul still had the voice to deliver. Another missed opportunity in my opinion but the song is still very good. How Many People (7.5) I know some people think this track is overproduced or they don't like the lyrics. Conversely, I personally think it is a decent to good album cut. It has a nice reggae flavor that differentiates it from other album songs and I like Paul's vocal. I like the "one too many right now for me" line and I like the the rhyming like line & shine, side/cried/died, etc. I like the overall sound and I don't skip it. Motor of Love (4) This track and the final track begins the only negative side of FITD in my opinion... the clunkers if you will. What makes it frustrating to me as a big fan is that Paul had alternatives at his fingertips to make FITD an especially great album and maybe in his top 5.. Flying to My Home, one of the B-sides would have been a far better choice (more on that later). While some rock critics hate ballads in general, I like many of Paul Ballads. But this one, not so much. There is a fine line between a great heartfelt ballad and something that crosses the line into too much sentimentality and sacherine. Motor of Love also is way overproduced and it is way too long (at 6 and a half minutes) in my opinion. Funny thing is that Paul's previous album got heavily criticized by fans for being too overproduced in 80's Production but the ballad on it...Only Love Remains is far simpler in production and a much better song in every way in my opinion. It is one of the gems on Press to me. I know that Paul was trying to get a certain sound on "Motor" including adding Beachboy type harmonies but in this case I think he tried too hard. He has a terrific song which would have given FITD another rocker and instead made a bad choice. Like someone else said, there many have been politics involved with multiple producers but at the end of the day, it is Paul's choice and in this case, he had a decidedly better alternative. Again this is only my opinion. i am sure some might like Motor of Love, but I have a feeling that the majority of fans don't. I just wished Motor of Love would have been a B-side and Flying to My Home would have been on the Album. Ou Est Le Soleil" (3) I still can't believe that this song was the final track. Because Paul likes a lot of different music, he sometimes tries to be too diverse. In an attempt to be "more hip" he forgets about his many strengths. Again, it's not because he doesn't have other alternatives. In my opinion, he had another good Paul/Elvis song...Back on my Feet which would have been a far better choice. This final track on FITD should have been relegated to a B-side instead. He also had other choices as a substitute including Loveliest Thing (another B-side) and other potential Paul/Elvis songs. Again, another very good album with unfortunately with a couple of clunkers. This would not have happened in the Beatles era where other members would have veto power or when a strong producer (like Nigel Goodrich) would also have rejection powers. Summary Yes FITD has a couple of clunkers and the 2nd half does tail off compared to the first half , but that doesn't take away from the fact that there are a lot (in my opinion 7 really good to great songs. That many alone makes it one of Paul's best studio (not including mostly cover albums) albums in my opinion.

I'm trying to recall the track listing placement of Ou Est Le Soleil when this album first was released...I know on the CD, it was the last track (just as it appears on this reissue)...however, I seem to recall that it was either not on the cassette or it was in a different spot in the track listing (somewhere in the middle)...I can't find my cassette copy at the moment, if someone can verify my sometimes faulty memory...LOL

_________________________________________________ Rich, I think you are right. The original CD did have Ou Est Le Soleil as the last track but the vinyl (side 1 and 2) did not include it. Not sure about the Cassette. I just included the 2nd half of my review above and as you can see I didn't like either Ou Est Le Soleil or Motor of Love as final choices on the CD over Flying to My Home and Back on My Feet. Just curious about your feelings about those 2 alternatives. I also listed the problem I have with Don't Be Careless Love...mainly Paul's lead vocal. Just think he could have done it better without such a grating lead vocal. I do find that hearing the 2017 Remaster, I find it less annoying now and I haven't been skipping it. Maybe it is the time that went by and I'm more used to Paul's "other" voices if you catch my drift. Anyway, I still like Don't Be Careless Love in general but it could have been sung better by Paul in my opinion. Finally, I do like the album cut of Figure of 8. I don't find it soft but then again that is just what I hear. My only complaint is that I think the very ending could have been done better...it just sort of tails off so it is sort of anticlimactic. I think that Paul's voice is quite good and it does rock but that is just my opinion and what I hear. I liked the live version on the tour and on the video but at the same time, I thought it ran too long. I think the album version is just the right length.

Downloaded all the extra songs. Had a spot of trouble at first and had to click Retry, but after that quick and easy. Only had time to listen to the 3 cassette demos. Listened to most of disc 1 in the car today. My favorite is This One, followed by My Brave Face and Figure Of Eight. BJ, the reason your score for Rough Ride did not show up is because there is a glitch on this forum when you type the number eight it comes out like this:

The Steve Hoffman forum. If you've never been there, it's an eye-opener. The McCartney fans there sometimes have a lot of good info and banter, but they can also be shockingly petty and mean and childish. If you think you've seen that here, just you wait, haha!

Not on the LP, but it was on the cassette, at the end of Side A. I still consider it a bonus track myself, just like the three tracks on the end of the "Press To Play" CD. I tend to consider the LP the definitive source for what the "album" is, including "New."
