THE NEXT DELUXE/REMASTERED ALBUM FROM PAUL
-
Have listened to both Venus and Mars/Speed of Sound re-issues for two weeks now. Thought both bonus CD's were pretty great, but also saddened me a bit. Why? Can you imagine if Venus and Mars had Juniors Farm and Soily instead of Ancient Eygpt/You Gave Me The Answer? It would have outsold Band on the Run. And on Speed of Sound, why couldn't we have Sally G and Pauls' version of Do Something About It instead of the dreadful Cook of the House and Joe Englishs' version of Something About It? Sorry Joe, but Pauls' version is superb! I have also argued here about London Town; why Paul didn't place Girls School and Mull of Kintyre on this album??

Same reason that I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy were not on With The Beatles, and Hey Jude/Revolution were not on The White Album, etc., etc. A lot of Singles were still released as separate music items at that point.

I'm sure I'm probably the only person who feels this way but ... I really wish Paul's team would redo the Band on the Run deluxe set. It seems an absolute shame that Ram and Wings Over America got such spectacular, well-designed box sets, and Band on the Run, one of Paul's best albums, didn't. Yes, yes I know there are a lot of albums he's yet to reissue (and I really really wish he was going to do Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway next rather than the adult contemporary mush of Tug of War/Pipes of Peace; I don't like either TOA or POP so I won't be buying those deluxe sets at all; harrumph) but Band on the Run deserves a super deluxe set with a TON of bells and whistles. Just seems too bad that the design team that has done such amazing work since Ram on the deluxe sets didn't get to give the same treatment to BOTR (or McCartney I &II for that matter).

It does seem kind of a shame that BOTR didn't get the same treatment as Ram did. Actually, BOTR is the only one I don't have, because they offered the DVD in the smaller package, which is the only time they've done that. So for me, if they went back and re-did it, I might actually be interested. But I'm truly more interested that they continue onward, whether it's TOW and POP or whatever.

Not sure if you guys got to see this in your emails, but the pm.com store is offering a bundle deal that includes the first 5 releases (full deluxe version), not including V&M/SOS, for $285 or all 7 deluxe versions for $425...it's a pre order situation w/ a release date of 12/12/14
-
^^^minor correction, I received this notice through this month's edition of "What's that you're doing" - it appears the link given to order these is to something other than pm.com http://kingsroadmerch.com/paul-mccartney/

Same here but I do wonder if,for whatever reason, alternative versions / outtakes etc simply don't exist? Even in 'Bootleg land', as far as I'm aware, nothing has ever originated from the Lagos sessions. Even the follow up sessions in London have not yielded any material. Certainly I find the Band On The Run deluxe set the least interesting so far.

I see your point, but you have to take in consideration for example that SALLY G was recorded in July 1974 and released in October 1974, while VENUS AND MARS was recorded between November 1974 and March 1975, with release on end May 1975. You can find a song-by-song account in my book "Paul McCartney: Recording Sessions (1969-2013)" and you'll be surprised to know the gaps between Paul's composition, recording and releasing songs.

Plus, as someone else mentioned earlier, Paul was a big believer in keeping a lot of his singles separate from albums (in the '70s), as the Beatles had done so many times.

The difference to me in this 'what if V&M and SOS was combined and pared down to one album' is that (at least to my knowledge) the writing of these songs and the subsequent recording sessions weren't loosely connected, such as Tug of War and Pipes of Peace were...those are the only two albums where this hypothetical 'what if' had some thread of reality
-
I don't know why we use to talk about LP's combinations... I think the real question is why Paul did his albums the way the did. ...and when I make myself this question, I don't have an answer about SOS. Is difficult to find an explanation about that album. If a man can make songs like 'Silly love songs', 'Let'Em in' and 'Beware my love' it means he is in a big inspirational moment. So... why did he decide to give more space to the band? Imagine a SOS with those six Paul's songs (although I wouldn't mind if we exclude 'She's my baby'... hate that song), plus 'Time to hide' and 3 or 4 more songs from Paul. We could be talking about a real pop masterpiece album.

No, no no! I love Spirits of Ancient Egypt and You Gave Me the Answer and wouldn't trade them for anything! And since neither got any meaningful radio play, they likely had zero effect on sales. in any case.

Juniors Farm and Soily don't belong on Venus and Mars. Venus and Mars is a record that I've always sat down and listened to all the way through. These songs belong together on this album.

The beauty of Paul's albums is some of the "not so great songs" that he includes in these albums, I read reviews about SOS and V & M and some of the tracks in them , I mean I like every track on these albums, including Cook of the house, you see , the feel of the album is when you buy it fresh when they come out, and I did, Wings included Linda and her vocals was part of the band that made the Wings sound, yes it's a silly song, but it;s Wings, and the other band members made SOS what it is, if every track on the album is perfect as you want from Paul, then it's just another great album, but the songs on them, Spirits, Magneto, Must do and the rest give us the sound of Wings and what it was, just like Rockshow concert, it's not the best there is, but it's Wings and I love it, every song, and I love that I have Mull of Kintyre on a single ( vinyl ), I cherish it and love that it's not on an album, that''s what makes it special.

The remastering of SOS is just beautiful. Listened to it a few days ago again.

A bit of gossip from the rumor mill: On Jan. 16, Hits Daily Double posted the following that sounds like its about Paul: NO HELLO, NO GOODBYE: What superstar near the end of his/her current record deal was spotted in the midst of snubbing the ranking executives at his/her label backstage after a recent show, to their unabashed shock? This was also reposted the other day on Blind Gossip and most of the guesses were that this is about Paul (because of the obvious reference to Hello, Goodbye). So ... what do people think? Is Paul separating from Concord? The company was bought by a larger company in 2013 and maybe Paul doesn't like the new owners. Is Paul unhappy with Concord? Is he looking to change record companies again? Thoughts?

From a marketing point of view, I would understand if he changes the to another record company... The promotion of New was really bad...
