THE NEXT DELUXE/REMASTERED ALBUM FROM PAUL
-
I think they should release Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway in a combined deluxe set and then Venus & Mars as a smallish deluxe set. Two separate sets but released at the same time this summer, please. SOS is only marginally interesting. Why spend a lot of time reworking an album with such marginal interest and with so few opportunities for extras?

Because it was Paul's most successful post-Beatles album at the time, hitting no. 1 no less than three separate times in the U.S. in 1976, and spent 7 weeks at no. 1. It also contains what I consider his finest rocker and best vocal, Beware My Love. And it's also the only Wings album with a Linda McCartney solo song, the delightful Cook of the House. I think it needed to be reworked, and I hope there's a cool bonus disc of outtakes and extras.

The Throwback Thursday post today was from Venus and Mars. Hopefully it is an inkling of what is to come

It's been V&M and SOS since forever ago and confirmed with a paper advert stuffed in all of the WOA releases....don't know why there is any dispute. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RqkAaOfc5dU/UaIo7eIKG-I/AAAAAAAAGrM/oYw_RVmyqKo/s1600/nextremasters.jpg
But this is MPL. The kings of breaking promises..
In fact, they've been teasing V&M and SOS since the McCartney / McCartney II reissues in 2011, at least. The RRS announcement was clearly due to some kind of mistake (two "Speed" titles), but I think it's a very good bet that those other two will still be big deluxe sets, although they may be the last big ones. I am highly doubting that June 17th date now. Maybe they don't want to interfere with the tour and the New videos by promoting older things.

Actually the problem with deluxe/superdeluxe exists for 2 albums from the 70s : Wild Life and Speed of Sound ( which they seem determined to release, having been announced on the flyer that came with earlier releases). I really don`t know how you can expand those to even a special edition wit a bonus disc. RRS has plenty of extra material, being initially intended to be a double album. Likewise V&A, London Town, BTTE all have extra songs recorded at the sessions, some truly great stuff like Waterspout, Cage, Tragedy (RRS) etc. Would be best to release those albums with meaningful additions (e.g. the BTTE video clips as a bonus dvd with super deluxe) . SOS simply doesn`t have anything you can add to it other than The Country Hams single, where Paul recorded a song by his dad "Walking in the Park with Eloise"
What about all the session outtakes released on the "Trevor Jones Tapes bootlegs"? For example, "Must do something about it" with Paul on vocals, etc.

I think you are right about V&M/SOS getting in the way of New and boosting the sales on that, assuming these US dates are indeed are a go. I remember last summer he did TV appearances with the US dates and he plugged Wings Over America. It would be strange to do the same this year and talk up two albums pushing 40 years old (can't believe it's been that long) when you have a fresh album out there.

That's the one track I would very much like to have on CD, but can't say I'm confident of an exciting bonus disc otherwise. Could be surprises, though.

Today's official email is announcing the imminent release of the "Save Us" video, and the "Early Days" video is teased in the current tour program, so yes, that's a lot to promote. Plus he was supposed to have music for a video game this year, plus there's the Beatles' rumored video collection this fall!

The problem is that either Paul or the record company are being stingy with the bonus tracks. I'm pretty sure they have to have demos, rehearsals, backing tracks, alternate takes for most of the songs on the album, but for some reason they are held up giving us usually poor (on content) bonus discs. I think it would have been great to get a complete 1976 bonus concert remixed on the big fat deluxe WOA, but instead we got a lean 8 track selection from a concert that will probably gather dust in the vaults forever.

Off the Ground should be nominated for a Grammy. THat's one of my favorite albums by Paul

"Cook of the House" is delightful? Perhaps in some alternate universe in which Barry Manilow is a punk rocker and Elvis stayed skinny. And for the life of me I'll never understand fans' fascination with the hoarse-voiced, utterly routine "Beware My Love." The only things that save SOS from being a complete disaster are "Silly Love Songs" and "San Ferry Anne."

ha ha ha? almost agreed with you?. beware my love and time to hide are the two tracks that i like most. SLS has a great base line and i'm sure it is what sold the album and i do like it but but it is a lesser tune for me. let 'em in is another one i like. =P

I must admit, of every album Beatle-related in my possession, SOS is the one I barely listen to. The songs I take from it are on other albums - live or compilation - and I do not feel the need to listen to the other songs. Silly Love Songs is the standout track by the length of the galaxy. I do like Beware my Love and the charm of Let Em In. But giving so many songs to other members was just a bad, bad move, in my opinion. ps. Cook of the House, as simple and contrived as it is, is a fun little nod. I could almost see Paul pulling it off, but in its current form, it just can't do it for me.

They do make strange decisions, such as putting live versions from many years later (Glasgow in 1979, Unplugged in 1991!) on the McCartney bonus disc. Even that "Women Kind" demo is from years later ("The Piano Tape"), even though it may have been written around 1970. Bonus material should be contemporary to the time of the original album, in my opinion. I get the feeling the SOS bonus disc may have more of this kind of fudging to scrape enough material together.
-
Speed Of Sound is absolutely the best Wings album. Cook Of The House is FANTASTIC, I never tire of hearing this track, Linda does a brilliant job. One of the best selling albums of 1976 too! This is the album I would most like to see in deluxe form.

I agree completely. Live versions from years later do NOT belong as bonus tracks with the original album. I rather hear a bad sounding cassette sourced acoustic demo of the songs from the album.

Linda had words for her naysayers: "I say you're crazy You make me sick" - The Light Comes From Within (And those were the kind words!)

Yes, cassette demos would be fabulous!

LOVE that song! She was a hoot! Did you ever see the Paul interview where he says those few lines & laughs? Really cute. It was while talking to Mary.
