Riding to Vanity Fair
-
Just rediscovered this song, I'm in love!! Anyone else feel the same way?!
-
After 'How Kind Of You', its my favourite song from 'Chaos.....'.
-
I agree, I think this is a great song. I think its quite dark and has a real menacing atmoshpere to it. I don't think the timescale is right but Heather Mills always comes to mind when I listen to it (although I think I read somewhere that it may be about Geoff Baker).
-
Not one of my faves. Don't think much of it. A little forced.

Too Much Rain is Classic

Ha! There was a huge debate about this on the board at the time! Geoff really wasn't important enough to have a song written about him. I don't think there is much doubt now that it was about Heather- but Paul will never say, of course.

It could be Paul's equivalent of John's "Steel and Glass"which I think was about Allen Klein. Also wondered if "dogs and bitches hunt for fame" from Queenie Eye was an oblique reference to the aforesaid Ms Mills?
-
That's one thing about Paul's songwriting if something is bugging him he will write a song about it. Not sure if Vanity Fair is related to the Beatles break up or Heather Mills.
-
Well, songwriters (including me, by the way) have a way of being inspired by one little thing and then fleshing a song out into something totally unrelated, so in that way, it could have been inspired by Geoff Baker and then spun off into a whole fictional scenario. Not all songs have just one meaning; they are often a bunch of unrelated impressions or thoughts or ideas strung together. That's the way I see "Mr. Bellamy" too (another frequently cited song in that vein). I remember an interview where Paul said he and Heather were staying in a rented "smart" house that would alert you if a door wasn't locked by displaying "Something's open." So Paul took that and stuck it into "Driving Rain" ("Something's open, it's my heart."). Does it really "mean" anything? Not really.

Yes Like the song the lyrics are something to relate to in personal life
-
I don't konw why Paul wrote the song, but I thought it was pretty funny that he all but quoted it after Yoko Ono made her 'Salieri to Mozart' comment (comparing Paul to John)
-
I've always liked this song, At the time I remember thinking that this one and Mr. Bellamy were probably about Heather, of course I have no idea really. That's how they both struck me at the first listen.

Don't think it was about Yoko but I could see why he could have quoted this song, after that comment!! Salieri why that's nervy, however she was sticking up for her husband, so you could see why she would say something like that, maybe. Wives do adore their husbands... Gonna cut her a break on that, even tho in no way is it really true about Paul being the Salieri!!! Of course Paul is the Mozart... (cough)um what classical music has John written? Has he? I am curious, because I have never heard any.

I think 'dogs and bitches' was a nod to every person Paul met that was like that in his life. and HM was not the only one.

and I sometimes get the shivers when I hear the song when I play the album. I think I'll dig it out for a listen again. it's been a while
-
Great song and arrangement. So sinister and menacing -- not Paul's usual modes.
-
Love this song so much, very dark, almost bitter! I like it when Paul sometimes writes out his 'darker' side. I personally think it is about John & Yoko from way back..

LOL I love that comment. Im a Mozart fan myself and I have to agree that Paul is a Mozart since he wrote classical music. Yoko is Salieri! She may be sticking up for John but really she's gotta let go of old grudges. Life's too short to hold grudges against somebody.

True - and in reality, she can 'stick up' for her man without having to dish on another (especially when the other is Paul McCartney)

I always thought the lyrics are about Heather M. (?) The Riding to Vanity Fair song
