2017 Setlist Speculation Thread

Bob Gannon:
I guess we are forgetting when he was describing the tour as "minty fresh" in interviews. Until the shows came, yeah, not so minty or fresh [..]
That was Brian Ray before the On The Run tour, when they shook up 10 slots, and boy did he pay for that comment .

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/paul-mccartney-on-touring-beatles-hits-kanye-and-jay-z-w490158 Will you be doing anything different on this leg of the One on One tour? Basically, we're doing the One on One show, and we've just jigged it around a little bit. It's a refreshed version of it. And most of the places we're going to, we haven't actually played [on previous legs], so they haven't seen One on One. Since the fantastic Sgt. Pepper's box set just came out, will you be putting more from that album in the set? Well, we do a few. We put the actual "Sgt. Pepper's" song in. I hate to say this, but there's only three surprises that we have in the show, so here I go giving them away. What I would try to do is have people go, "Oh, I didn't know they do that one, man." So yeah, there are one or two. But as far as these days with the Internet world, you can't have a surprise after the first gig. There are a few.
This though! *toot-toot*!!! All abooooooard... the hype train! It's a comment from May though, and he's already backtracking by noting the audiences he's playing for hasn't seen this show yet. (He considers a 25% shake-up as a full new show as we know.) "What I would try to do is have people go, "Oh, I didn't know they do that one, man." So yeah, there are one or two. But as far as these days with the Internet world, you can't have a surprise after the first gig. There are a few." He can so easily do this though. The 2010 "rotation spots", but then with 4 instead of 2 songs and at 3 slots instead of 1 slot...

Don't hold your breath!!!! I'm not!!! I'd love to be surprised but Paul way too enamored with his safety net

So do you expect to see a refreshed setlist tomorrow?

Definitely, as Bob just posted he's expecting a complete overhaul ;)! If the question was for me: not a single change from Tokyo Dome, not counting that he might "dropped" 'Letting Go' in favour of 'Jet' again, or gets out 'Junior's Farm' instead. If he did rehearse something new, it will be 'She's Leaving Home' (for 'The Fool On The Hill'), since Rusty or Brian was playing the intro to that during the Budokan rehearsal.

There is no need for hype (or the excess negativity). He clearly said there are three songs in the show that are surprises. Surprises to who? The internet which to me, means three songs that he hasn't played on the One on One Tour before. We'll see which "pepper" he refers to. If I had to guess the three songs...the optimist in me would say Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Penny Lane, and My Brave Face. The realist would say...I've Just Seen a Face, Drive My Car, and Day Tripper.

Mostly agree. Optimist in me: Tokyo setlist's new additions (Juniors Farm, Jet, I Wanna Be Your Man) Plus his 3 surprises. I will even say he adds a single brand new song to the set list. After all, each of the last few years has brought something new. She's Leaving home would be a welcomed one especially if it swapped Rigby out. I think the only solo he might do is something from Flowers in the Dirt. Plus, if he debuted a brand new song that would get some good buzz and press his way.

Bob expects zero interesting changes but hopes for the best

____________________________________________________ First of all, I would like to Thank rlj1010 for the Rollingstone article. Forget about trying to analyze what Paul did in 2010 or past tours. This article alone gives us the best clues as to what might happen in Miami. I like the article as a whole because the interviewer got Paul discussing a lot of interesting things about his tour regiment. I also liked the question about Mr. Kite because it got Paul talking "frankly" about the critics who "act" as though "they" were there when different songs were written. This is exactly what Paul was writing about on the last stanza of "Early Days". Paul said that that they jointly wrote the lyrics and that many of lines were "pulled" exactly from the circus poster...the characters etc. Paul was basically defending why he feels he has every right to include Mr. Kite in the setlist. I thought that was a pretty good stuff in the interview. The only part of the interview that I didn't like was the writers question...Looks like you change setlist frequently. That was a very poor question in my opinion because compared to some of Paul's contemporaries, Paul hardly changes a setlist frequently. A much better question would have been...Do you feel you've shortchanged a portion of your career (e.g. Solo Career) on your tours and is it "deliberate". Now that would have been a great question. Getting back to Miami's show, I think we learned several things from the article: *The full Sgt. Pepper song most likely will be played (the one surprises he gave away) but we also know that it won't be the opener since Paul talks about the excitement of playing Hard Day's Night as the intro. *I'm pretty sure we will still get in Miami some of the songs that have been discussed frequently on this tread...Temporary Secretary, My Valentine and Mr. Kite. Paul discussed how much he likes playing them. *He also mentions that he loves playing the Wings' songs BOTR, Live and Let Die and 1985. No surprise at all for the 1st 2 since they are signature songs and are played at every regular show. I do like that he will continue to play 1985. It's just a great song and comes off very well in the live setting in my opinion. I noticed he did have a struggle to sing it in Tokyo however. *Besides the Sgt. Pepper full treatment, we most likely will get 2 more surprises (he said 3). It's anybody's guess what the 2 other surprises are. As some have said, it might be one of the Beatle songs that they have been rotating or intermittently played over the last 5 years or so. My guess however is that they will be legitimate surprises. My gut feel is it probably won't be something he has never played (even though he has so many great ones never played) but it will be something he hasn't played over the last 2 tours...One on One and Out There. Then at least it could be called a surprise. My guesses are: * Penny Lane - I pick this one over She's Leaving Home because I think he (and with his band's help) can sing this one better and easier. Too much on "She's Leaving Home" would be Paul's Solo voice and I'm not sure he can sing it well at this stage. Much of Penny Lane can be sung by the whole band and it was a Sgt. Pepper era song (on Disc 2 of the new Reissue). * A Day in the Life - Probably the most signature song from Sgt. Pepper and Paul has sung it before. Not too difficult to sing and Paul might even get the crowd to join in for "Give Peace a Change. Along with the full Sgt. Pepper song, they would be my guesses. As far as what he would drop, the Sgt. Pepper reprise would be the easiest guess and maybe "I Wanna Be Your Man" since he might have played that one in Japan because the Beatles had played that in 1966. It also wouldn't shock me if he dropped 4-5 seconds since he really struggles singing it in Tokyo. We don't have long now...only a little over 24 hours.

A very clear and intelligent analysis good sir! As far as what to drop, these are the ones that need to go...and not because I've heard them however many times, they just break the flow or lower the bar... -Temporary Secretary -Four Five Seconds -I Wanna Be Your Man -Peppers' Reprise...it's just awkward in the current setting.
-
He could play Good Morning Good Morning for the anniversary of Sgt Pepper, it fits perfectly with his actual vocal range and it ROCKS But I feel like he could sing All You Need is Love for the 50 years of Summer Of Love And probably "I Wanna Be Your Man" or "Yellow Submarine" dedicated to Ringo for his birthday!

Not agreed at all, not agreed at all, not agreed at all, and very much agreed . It kinda works with the introduction he does though, and it going fast into a big encore song, but it still feels like the end of a show. Not that anyone asked, but for me these need to go: 'Save Us', sub par material, doesn't deserve a 4 year run. Derails the build-up after the grande opening. 100 up tempo rock choices to put there. Even simply 'Jet' again would do. High hopes they know this, they did exactly that 3 out of 4 Tokyo gigs. 'Let Me Roll It' / 'I've Got A Feeling', long overstayed their welcome, vocally not up to snuff any more, 100 slower rock songs on guitar to choose from. 'Here Today', not going to happen, but many other intimate emotional acoustic songs to pick from in tribute to Lennon, which would have a bit of magic left. 'Mr. Kite', I understand he wants to showcase his bass line on this, but B-tier Lennon material as McCartney setlist staple is just too much. 'Something', hard to pick a different Harrison ode with a just as meaningful story, but this show piece also lost all its impact.

And in response...agreed, not agreed at all, not agreed at all, not agreed at all, not agreed. My only agreement being "Save Us" and that's because I'm quite confident that we have seen the last of it. I'm not expecting to hear it. I'm expecting some assortment of Jet, Junior's Farm, and Letting Go to bounce between slots two and four...and if I can be permitted to dream, throw in Getting Better & My Brave Face I know I'm in the minority, but I never tire of Let Me Roll It. I wouldn't care if I've Got a Feeling is dropped...I've heard it plenty of times and don't have any real attachment to it. The tributes (Here Today & Something) are going to be appear fairly fresh to the markets he's appealing to this summer. They will go over beautifully. And lastly, it would make absolutely no sense to drop Mr. Kite this summer. It's his scapegoat from adding any new Pepper material and while still being able to acknowledge the anniversary. I suspect it will disappear after Australia.

That's the best way! There's a great deal of fun in speculation too...hopefully my efforts to stay out of the know until Monday are a success!

Good luck with that!!! I will be trying to follow in real time. I know, I know, big time Friday night!

I actually like Temporary Secretary, Let Me Roll It, Mr Kite. If I was given the magical power of axing three songs they would be And I Love Her, Eleanor Rigby, and My Valentine. Oh well Since Save Us was brought up, I never understood why it wasn't in a rotation for the 2nd song spot with I Can Bet. A big missed opportunity that was actually within his setlist "rules." And still put me down on record for one true surprise tomorrow. Got a feeling. Although I am probably saying that since I'll be there.

After 126 shows, I could put an axe to many

[..] I know I'm in the minority, but I never tire of Let Me Roll It. [..]
I love the song, I don't even mind his wrecked 10's live vocals on it, but it's that song at that spot with that introduction which makes it a "down to earth" moment for me. If he would pull an "Antwerp 2012" on it - when they went wild and 'Drive My Car' suddenly appeared in the encore - it's probably refreshed for me again. Just put 'Getting Better' - see how low my barrier became lol - at that spot and chuck 'Let Me Roll It' somewhere at 3/4th of the set and it's already a big improvement.
