GILES MARTIN
Wednesday, September 26th, NYC - The White Album Listening Party!
There were many familiar faces at the event - Apple Chief Jeff Jones introduced Giles Martin. All three Beatles Channel Fab Fourum Hosts Dennis Elsas, Bill Flanagan and Tom Frangione, Bruce Spizer, Kenneth Womack, Beatles podcast or radio personalities Darren DeVivo, Mitch Axelrod, Rob Leonard, Tony Traguardo & Ken Michaels, plus the four of us. Giles took us on a journey through the amazing recording sessions from 1968 that mostly ended up as The White Album, of course, producer by his father, George Martin. Giles told the room full of listeners, that the music of the White Album and The Beatles is timeless. He proceeded to tell us how he went about doing the remixes for this 50th Anniversary release.
First, Giles began with the Esher Demos, which is one entire disc in the set. He said since all the Beatles had home recording devices at their homes by 1968, not all of these were, in all likelihood, recorded at George's home. He played 5 of these songs for us - Back in the U.S.S.R., Sexy Sadie, Not Guilty, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, and Child of Nature. I noticed they were all double-tracked, which seems a little unusual for simple demos. Ob-La-Di had really cool harmonies and was worked on together as a band. I thought I noticed John trying to speed up U.S.S.R. Child became Jealous Guy with entirely different lyrics.
Second, Giles played 5 outtakes (from the 50 outtakes on 3 CDs of the set. Cry Baby Cry, I Will, Julia, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, & Goodnight. Cry - very interesting different guitar work. I Will was not double tracked, Julia did not have the Donovan claw strum. Take 2 did have it. Goodnight has unique 3 part harmonies with a Donovan claw guitar strum.
Finally, we got to hear 5 remixed songs from the actual album itself. Giles talked about playing the tracks to both Paul and Ringo. About the originals with George Martin, Giles said Ringo told him he told his dad -Go crazy and we'll then reign you in. Here are my notes on each of them. Overall, the sound jumps out of the speakers without losing its original appeal and emotion.
1. Dear Prudence - All instruments were so clean and easy to hear each one. There is also a piano at the end.
2. Mother Nature's Son - So clean, the bass really jumps, and great effects.
3. Long Long Long - This has the biggest difference. The vocals are now up front as are most of the instruments. I asked Giles (in the Q & A) about this big change. It was no mistake that his Dad, George and likely the other Beatles wanted the song that way in 1968. How did he feel about this remix? He liked the question and said he gave it a lot of thought before remixing it. I think he improved upon this great song of George's.
4. Happiness Is a Warm Gun - Giles pointed out the song keeps changing meter and feelings. John's voice is even more up front than the original.
5. Helter Skelter - I heard some clear harmonies in places.
Overall I give this White Album release an A+ based on what I heard yesterday. Congratulation Giles on giving us what we fans want to hear. We also thank Apple for getting these great projects out to the world. -
I can hardly wait for this!
I just find it amazing that a double album didn't even have a 'single' released off it. Just like Pepper. Didn't need to, given the releases either side of it. Always looked after their fans, those four boys.
And, this was released as The Beatles... Simple white cover.... now known as The White Album.... I mean, really, what other band ever have achieved that? We all know it as The White Album, but not its official release title. How does that happen?
This album just grew its own story. And it assumed another title. I love it. And I can hardly wait.

I remember when it had just come out (Thanksgiving '68) and I was out shopping with my parents at the Navy Exchange in San Diego. They had set up a large display rack at the checkout area in front of the store. It had row after row of the White Album LP, which only had the words The BEATLES in raised letters, each with a different number stamped on the cover. The display was quite impressive. I begged my mom to buy it for me (the double album cost around $7.00, which was a lot at the time!). She said she would get it for me, but I would have to wait until Christmas to open it. I'll never forget the anticipation for those weeks, and then opening the record on Christmas morning and poring over the poster, and the lyrics, and the 4 photos of the group. My parents let me play the double LP on their big stereo console in the living room, and the whole family listened to the The Beatles new (white) album on Christmas day 1968.
Now 50 years later...I cannot wait to see and hear this Deluxe Box Set!

I've always thought it a bit too lush, so hearing them sing harmony instead of the heavy orchestration will be a welcome change....for me.

The White Album keeps growing in stature over time. Song for song, it's their best album hands down.
I hope we get the complete Esher sessions. The stripped down Good Night before George Martin ruined the song would be the worth the price of admission alone.
I think the only flaw with the album is the ending is a letdown. Revolution 9 was a cool concept , but did it have to be 8 minutes?? John could have gotten his message across and make it much more listenable if it was edited to 3 minutes. Then, instead of the horrible orchestra production, a simple beautful Good Night with harmonies would have made a perfect closer. I can't believe John gave the thumbs up to the final version. My guess is he didn't care or want to be bothered.

As far as I know, the complete Esher demos are included. Read my post from 10/13.

I can't wait to hear the Esher demos cd. The sound quality sounds amazing and will certainly make my bootleg cd version obsolete.
-
Wow. Between cleaned up demos, new mixes, and new songs, the potential here is amazing. Sour Milk Sea, Goodbye,, Not Guilty, Look at Me, Junk, Circles and Child of Nature all could have Beatles A-sides.
-
I have the vinly and then "lost" it
never got arounf to purchasing the CD
fond memories of listening to the album from track one to the end
something I have not done for over 30years
ofcourse I have listened to individual songs from the album when it got on the Blue albims
now listening to the CD I hope I recapture those times

"Here's another clue for you all!" ~ //oo\\
WILL WE BE ABLE TO HEAR ANYMORE CLUES ON THE REMASTER? MY BROTHER BOUGHT IT ON 8 TRACK IN THE EARLY 70'S. I HAD AN ARMCHAIR WITH A 10" SPEAKER ON BOTH SIDES. I HAD A LEAR JET CAR STEREO HOOKED UP TO A 12 VOLT BATTERY CHARGER. WOULD GET A LITTLE MYSTIFIED AND LISTEN TO IT OVER AND OVER! Fond Memories.
