Well friends, Rolling Stone just released their Top 50 Albums of 2018, and the sensational "Egypt Station" came in at #11. I guess I should be elated, but I'm just not. I see the Top Ten albums mentioned and I just shake my head. Four rappers with "explicit lyric" warnings and A Star Is Born soundtrack. Are you kidding me?? Hey, I loved the movie, but really? Bradley Cooper over Sir Paul? Remember when Rolling Stone was a rock and roll magazine? Yea, me too.
Just because you or I don't appreciate rap doesn't mean it has no value. When talking about current music, I try very hard not to sound like my parents discussing the Beatles.
I understand your point, Bruce. The younger me never understood jazz or would never listen to classical music. But as I got older, I grew appreciative of jazz ( I love the Twin Peaks soundtrack). And I am now appreciative of classical music, even if it isn't my thing. But I appreciate it..... I know how brilliant the artists are that make that music.... More brilliant (technically) than the average rock or pop band..... Rap, on the other hand. I will never like it. And I will never appreciate it. It is dross. And that's not me being intolerant. That's just me thinking it is crapola. Rubbish. It doesn't take a person of much talent to put it out. I will never warm to it. I detest it. It makes me ill. I will never value it. I find it divisive. I find it promotes violence. I simpy detest it.... and will never like it. And I certainly will never appreciate it. It is crap with a silent C. I detest it.... I could live for a thousand years and I can assure you, I will never ever like it. I'd rather listen to grass grow.... on the other hand, I know a lot of parents were dismissive of the Beatles at the time... but many certainly went on to appreciate them. Some of them went on to love them.... not gonna happen with me and rap.... All said with respect.
I’m with you on the rap, toris! However, I never warmed to Jazz, but I do like classical music. My ex-husband had a bunch of albums in the ‘80s, but he took them when he left, so I never listened to it again (except Paul’s classical stuff)
Since I don't consider rap to even be music, it's easily dismissed. It has to be music before I can decide if I like it ot not, or if it has some value to spend time evaluating. That stuff is just trash. Period. It's not a generational thing. It's just that some things are worth considering and evaluating and some other things are not. Rap fits into the latter category.
My parents said virtually those exact words about rock 'n' roll. Of course it's a generational thing (as the younger folks I work with keep reminding me).
I seriously doubt that anyone...including parents of course...dismised rock 'n' roll as not even being music. They may have not liked it, but didn't totally dismiss it in the manner that rap can be dismissed out of hand. Or am I fooling myself?
The hatred heaped on early rock 'n' roll was far more intense than almost any reactions to rap. Frank Sinatra famously said it was "written, sung and played by cretinous goons." I remember seeing a PBS special on Elvis Presley's early years with a clip of a white southerner denouncing his singing as "n****r music." In 1958 Mutual Radio, then a major network, banned all rock 'n' roll records from its stations, calling rock "“distorted, monotonous, noisy." I could go on for days. Adults thought it was the cultural end of the world. My parents quite resolutely called it "nothing but noise," and that was a common -- bordering on universal -- sentiment among folks over 40.

Wow! I’m glad my parents were not like that! I grew up in a western suburb of Cleveland, Ohio so rock ‘n’ roll was “King” there! Motown was very popular too there in the ‘60s because we got the AM radio station CKLW from Detroit across Lake Erie!

I do, too. But that's a very different thing than saying it's not music.

Nobody said that he said it wasn’t music. Note: George Harrison said he hated rap MUSIC.
Now, I hate rap and refuse to call it music. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I didn't say he said it wasn't music. I was referring back to your statement, which does in fact channel my parents speaking about rock.

Oh, okay, I see. Well, as Walter Cronkite used to say, “That’s the way it is.”

Egypt Station climbs back to 34 on Billboard !!!
As I mentioned elsewhere McCartney II makes a magical mystery appearance at 94 on Billboard.
RRS and WL sadly missing in the Top 200.

Glad to hear Egypt Station made it back into the charts at #34, it really deserves it. Sorry but IMO Wild Life is awful and does not belong in the charts. I truly doubt it did very well when it was originally released.

I may have posted this before but years ago Billy Joel said rap was not music, he called it an art form.

Yankeefan, read where you were in England over the Holidays. Hope you had a great trip! Did you go to Liverpool or visit Abbey Road in London.
Not sure why Egypt Station is back on the Charts and #34 is a pretty strong showing considering it was off the charts entirely. Wonder if it is due to the fact that the Holidays are over and all the Christmas CD's are off the charts. Or (and better yet) is it due to the Paul/Emma Stone video on "Who Cares". I wasn't that wild about the video so I would be surprised if that is the answer. Did "Who Cares" ever come out as a single and if yes...what is the "B" side. I don't keep up with the record charts so maybe someone here can enlighten me.
As far as 2018 Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway Remasters are concerned, I only bought RRS because Target had the 2 CD version for only $15.95 upon release. Target did not carry the 2 Cd mini version so I have not heard it at this point.
I just gave my review of RRS (both Discs) on the Remaster/Archive Collection Thread. At the price I paid at Target, the RRS Set was fantastic especially the bonus, 18 track 2nd Disc. If you get a chance, read my opinions of all the songs during the RRS sessions.

Yankeefan, I meant to say on the next to the last paragraph that Target did not carry the 2 CD mini version of Wildlife and so I haven't heard the 2018 Remaster of WL. So glad that Target decided to carry the RRS album instead.

London is great city and we had a wonderful time there. We were very busy with sightseeing and enjoying theater. London is really decorated for Christmas and we were impressed how festive it was there. We were doing some shopping one night and happened to walk by Stella McCartney's store/building and it was decorated with a whole bunch of colored Christmas lights. If I could figure out how to post pictures on this site, I could have you see it. As for Abbey Road, we crossed that on our 2012 London/Paris trip and it was a blast !! Of course we have a few pictures of us crossing it. Got to give the locals credit, they really do have patience with the tourists crossing Abbey Road. Would love to see Liverpool one day but hard to fit everything in. We already have plans to be in Italy and Greece this coming September.
I was not wild about the "Who Cares" video also but with Emma Stone in it the video it got some attention to the video and the song. I will check out your RRS review shortly. I have not listened to that album in a very long time so I will have to give it a listen again.

They're bundling CDs with concert tickets again. Basically all it takes is a mouse click to get a copy of the CD with your ticket purchase. So this will be a short return to the charts, alas. Come On To Me is making a modest return to AC radio (now that those stations have stopped playing Christmas music incessantly), but not enough to account for this big a sales bump.
