On Gerry Marsden's passing.
Going off topic a little bit, .......
It was so nice to see Paul McCartney paying such a great and heartfelt tribute to Gerry Marsden.
Did you watch the video I posted in the RIP thread? Paul appeared (in a video) on Gerry's "This Is Your Life" show.
I loved it Oobu. Thank you very much. Loved watching Gerry's face on the "This is Your LIfe" show as Paul was congratulating Gerry. You could tell that Gerry really liked/loved Pau and that they were good friends.
I haven't watched it for many years but wasn't Gerry one of the pub party goers in the James Paul McCartney tv special? I have a very hazy recollection that he was.

I don't remember that one. But it sure is possible.

Hey, my memory brain cell is still working. Gerry not only appears in the James Paul McCartney special but Paul mentions him by name too. Scroll forward to 24:00 at the link below:

Good memory. Thanks for posting that.

I wrote this in the R.I.P. thread, but since all this off-topic stuff is still here, will add it here too:
Beatles4Ever wrote:
"We've also recently lost Chad, of Chad and Jeremy, and Peter, of Peter and Gordon, for whom Paul (and John, I guess,) wrote two great songs, World Without Love and Woman."
Yes, Chad Stuart recently died, but Peter Asher is very much alive! It was Gordon Waller who died in 2009 at the age of 64. And John had nothing to do with writing World Without Love and Woman. (the latter Paul wrote under the pseudonym Bernard Webb)

Thanks for the catch on Peter...still being alive. Not sure how/why I thought he had passed. Sorry, Peter. Regarding the songs, while Paul, as you stated, wrote "World Without Love," he also wrote "Nobody I Know" and "I Don't Want To See You Again," for the duo. All three were credited to Lennon - McCartney on the record labels....and by Northern Songs...even though John had nothing to do with writing those songs. That's why I used the term....(and John, I guess)."Woman," as you stated, which Paul also wrote, was credited to Bernard Webb...to see if it would sell without any connection to Paul (and/or John). After a week or two it was publicly disclosed as being a song written by Paul.....at least that's what I just read online about all four songs...which also describes the record labels and writing credits.

Back on topic, sadly "McCartney III" has already dropped down to #37 in Billboard charts. I assume it will be out of the top 100 soon. I just wonder, can an older artist have a popular album anymore that stays in the charts for a month or so. "McCartney III" had everything you would think it needs to sell decently, critical acclaim, publicity from McCartney being on the cover of "Rolling Stone" with Taylor Swift, McCartney appearing on the "Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" and being released around Christmas which made people aware of the album.

Here in the UK, McCartney lll dropped from #1 to #19. I can see it being out of the top 100 by the end of January if not sooner. Paul's fan-base is relatively small and understandably shrinking all the time as his potential customers are literally dying off from old age. A 25 year old who got into the Beatles in 1963 would be 83 now and not getting any younger. It is a great shame that sales don't simply equate with the quality of the music. Unfortunately , for a lot of the younger generation who are the main music buyers, even if they liked the music, the fact that its been made my someone of their grandparents age must be real off putting. I know when I was a teenager getting into Wings, I would never consider buying an album by a 78 year old no matter how much I liked the music.

Fortunately, a lot of us were only 8 or 9 when we got into the Beatles in 1963/1964, so we're "only" 65 now, with hopefully at least 20 more years to spend our money on Beatles-related items!

Good question! Who knows about similar artists that have been at the top of the charts for longer than one week? Bob Dylan maybe with his last album? Springsteens Letter to you? I must say that the last week or so, it’s also reasonably quiet on Mccartney social media. No more TV appearence, podcasts and so on. I thought that would still go on in the first weeks after the release to keep the momentum going...

Very sad to hear about Gerry Marsden passing away, like others I just loved his voice. "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" was my favorite song that he sung. Like BJ mentioned, so many people of our era are passing away in the field of music and sports which is very sad.
Yankeefan,
I loved "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" too.
Do me a favor. Can you put up the Youtube video of "The Making of Gerry's Ferry Across the Mercey". It goes into how Gerry wrote "Ferry Across the Mrrcey" and when Gerry got the inspirtation for the song he called up his Mother so he could remember the song. Great story. Thanks

Not to be picky, but it's ...."....Cross the Mersey."

Thanks Beatles4Ever. I got up really early this morning and I saw the youtube clip. I did love the clip about the inspiration of Gerry writing the song. He just wanted to remember what he heard in the song so he called his Mom.

That's the one. Thanks Yankeefan. Loved Gerry's story of how he got the inspiration for the song and music on Ferry Cross the Mersey. I remember Paul talking often about how hard it was to remember songs that he and John made up in the studio or even the day before. What did Gerry do in this case...call your Mom.

In the new UK Album chart, McCartney lll is down from #19 to #38. Meanwhile the Beatles 1 album is up 3 places from #43 to #40. Also a former #1, it has though already spent 296 weeks on the album chart.

I posted the official video of "Find My Way" on my FB page because I love the song and the video and it puts me in a good mood. As you can imagine, most of my FB friends are are in their 60's or a little older. The post got a bunch of likes and a few comments. There were four people who had no idea he had an album out and said they might buy it. In other words, we can help the McCartney management team (lol) by promoting the album ourselves !!

Great work on Facebook Yankeefan. MPL and Paul should put you on their payroll.
I have to say that my overall feelings about McCartney 3 has only soared since the album was officially released. The fact that McCartney 3 will only be on the "best seller" charts for a couple more weeks doesn't really bother me that much. The fact of the matter is that all the older artists (Dylan, Springsteen etc.) have very similar results. It is also very true that the benefits of being on commercial radio these days is waning with each passing month. Peope these days are not listening to their local fm radio station that much except for possibly the news, sports and weather. Today people are making up their own music playlists or listening to Spotify or Pandora. Capitol and MPL did a great marketing job on McCartney 3 guiding it to #1 on the charts upon release which is great for a 78 year old artist. People today are listening to music in all different ways than the conventional radio and CD's of the past. "New" cars don't even have CD Players anymore. What does that tell you.
As for positives regarding "Post Album Release"promotion, I'm still seeing on the Internet "new" and generally positive newspaper/magazine reviews on McCartney 3 every week. All of this continues to help "sales". Personally I have really grown to like/love the album. Of the 11 tracks, I love almost all of them. And a couple of songs that were lukewarm to me upon first listen have really grown with me like Deep Deep Feeling, Lavortory Lil and Deep Down. Those weaker tracks are better than the weak songs on many other previous McCartney Solo albums. All in all, I think McCartney 3 is in the Top 6 or 7 of all of Paul's Post Beatles' albums. I would say that only Band on the Run and Chaos and Creation are clearly better for overall consistency but McCartney 3 surely holds its own again all the other Paul Post Beatles' albums.
