MCCARTNEY III IMAGINED

Thanks Beatles4Ever. I realize there are varying opinions on McCartney III.
Just curious, besides Phoeb's cover of "Seize the Day", what are your favorites on McCartney III Imagined, least favorites?

"We will have to agree to disagree on the purpose of McCartney III Imagined. Even though Paul and the Beatles have a huge audience, they are a group and despite being the most successful music group of all time, this is music and they are still lacking a big segment of the overall markeplace...namely the younger demographic who are a big segment of the record buying public"
BJ, I thought I would do a little experiment last weekend. My daughters are in their early 30's and I asked them if they knew of Dominic Fike . They said they knew the name (they are better than me -lol) but could not really tell me anything he has done in particular. I will mention that both daughters not only love all kinds of music, they are dance teachers so their collection of all types of music is huge. For the most part they teach dance to middle school - high school kids during the school year. In the summer, they sometimes teach a few masters classes for college age dance students. In other words, they also have general feel what younger people like in music. I played them the clip of Fike doing "Kiss Of Venus" and asked them what they thought of him/song. They basically said the song and Fike were OK, nothing that would "knock their socks" off and would not buy the song. I told them would it help that it is a Paul McCartney song and they said no.
Remember when McCartney did song with Kanye and Rhianna, do you think that helped younger people give Paul McCartney music a try ? -lol.
Off topic a bit but I will finish with this short story. When "McCartney III" came out my oldest daughter heard me playing "Deep Deep Feeling". She asked for a copy of the song because she thought she could make that song into a "modern" dance she was doing for her older students. She knows how to cut music so she can make the dance 4-5 minutes long. Anyway, she has finished the choreography and says she will show us a clip of rehearsal in the near future. I will note most of the times she does "modern" dances, the music she selects is mostly instrumental.
Have a good day, glad your eye surgery went well !!

Thanks Yankeefan. My "right" eye did bother me last night. It was more of a nuisance pain. I think it was because they might have put the eye patch on too tight. We went to the Eye Doctor this morning and he said that my eye looked good and that the presurre to the eye after Cataract Surgery is typical. He said that it should only last another day or two. At least I only have to have the eye patch on while I'm sleeping.
Onto one of our "favorite:s subects"... I really have no idea if these younger cutting edge artists will help Paul by being on McCartney 3 Imagined. I would think that many of this younger demographic (unless they are kids of huge Beatle or Paul nuts like us) have little knowledge of Paul McCartney except they probably know he was a Beatle and a few of his famous Beatle songs. But I would also think that "fans" of Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, Dominic Fike, Blood Orange etc, will get to know a bit more about Paul due to their appearance on his tribute album. I guess we'll have a better feel for these answers when we see how well McCartney III Imagined does on the charts over the next 2-3 months. I guess what I was trying to say was that it would really help if a couple more of these younger artists have "live" appearances on some of the big late night TV shows like Dominic Fike just did. As we say, we will see.
Thanks again.

I must admit it didn't tickle my fancy on first listening.... decades ago.
But I really now appreciate it.
Coming Up is still one of my fave McCartney tracks.
Waterfalls, Summer's Day Song and One of These Days much better than most of what is on McCartney 3
I like Dark Room... and,,,, yes, even Bogey Music.... better than those "Deep" songs of the third album... by a mile.... or a kilometre, as we'd say...
And.... I do... (wait for it).... I never liked it at first.... but I love..... Temporary Secretary.
Toris,
As I have stated before, music is very subjective. You have stated your views on McCartney III loud and clear. I'm also a big fan of Paul McCartney and I have a different view on McCartney III and I'll give you my reasons.
I like Mc3 more than McCartney 2because it is a much more conventional in terms of its overall sound. I also like Mc3 better than McCartney 1 because the songs as a whole are more complete.
Let's start out with the first Paul DIY album in 1970.
McCartney 1 - had 3 great songs imo...Maybe I'm Amazed (one of Paul's all time classics) Every NIght (another great song) and Junk (terrific). Like with many Macca albums I like a few others on McCartney 1 like Teddy Boy and Oo YOU but the remainder of the album had a bunch of half-baked ideas and songs imo like The Lovely Linda, That Would be Something (a jam that's pretty good), Valentine Day, Hot As Sun, Man We Was Lonely, and Momma Miss Amreica. And I never liked the final track Kreen-Akrore.
Final Grade (my opinion only) 7+ (The 3 great great songs made the album)
Mcartney 2 - More Electro and Synthe oriented, this album imo had 3 to 4 good to great songs...Coming Up, Waterfalls,Summer's Day Song and the final track One of These Days. I also think On the Way and Nobody Knows are good songs as well. Remaining tracks include 2 instrumentals (Front Parlaur and Frozen Jap) which imo are a nice listen. The other 3 I've never liked includiing Temporary Secretary, Bogey Music and Darkroom. As much as I have tried to like them, they never grew with me like many of Paul songs.
Final Grade (my opinion only) 7 (the 6 good to great songs made the album)
McCartney 3 - The most conventual of Paul's 3 DIY albums - I like this one the best of the 3. In my opinion, not a bad song or clunker on the whole album. Of the 2 jam songs I think "Deep Down" could have sounded better imo. It meanders too much and it needed "live" horns... but I think it still has a good soul/R&B sound and vibe. This one could have been better imo but it's still a good song. The rest are all good to great imo. While none of McCartney 3 tracks are probaby as great as Maybe I'm Amazed, the best tracks are still very good to great like Find My Way, Sliding, The Kiss of Venus, Seize the Day and the closer "When Winter Comes. I also really like Pretty Boys and Women and Wives. After many listens I grown to like Lavortory Lil. Yes the lyrics are slight but I love Paul's rocking guitar solo's. And I also really like the other jam song "Deep Deep Feeling" because of the constant changes in the song. It has great instumentation throughout (great piano chords, electric guitar, drums plus the great maracas and shakers and of course his great bass. All in all, I've grown to really like "Deep Deep Feeling" even though it is 8 plus minutes. The opening and closing tracks also tie the whole album together melodically and lyrically. This last part makes McCartney 3 a great album feel and not just a collection of songs.
Grade (My opinion) 9 (for overall consistency and "album feel)
I know I'm not going to change your mind but these are my opinions on the 3 McCartney DIY Albums. I think they are all good to great and go a long way of making McCartney one of the all time greats. I my opinion, his Post Beatles' Career was just as good as his Beatle's career.
Hey BJ, it's not like I hate McCartney 3... it's just I always expect the best on a new Paul release. And this wasn't it. The "deep" songs ruin it for me, and they put pressure on lightweight songs like Pretty Boys and the opener. I give it a 5.91 out of 10.
The original McCartney solo I find Paul's worse album of all time. Only kept alive by Maybe I'm Amazed and the two "Beatles" songs.... those three keep it at a 5.9 out of 10... otherwise a 3.25 out of 10.
McCartney 2... only an 11-track album. Frozen Jap and Front Parlour a waste of space. I'm happy with the rest. But I'm giving it a 7 out of 10.

Thanks Toris and tjo each their own. You picked a great day for me. It's my Daughter's Birthday (her 40th) which unfortunately makes me even older. But as Paul says..."Seize the Day".
Where to I begin. Let me start with your last rating above...McCartney 2. I actually like both instrumentals Frozen Jap and Front Parlour. As much as I tried, I never liked Temporary Secretary, Darkroom or Bogey Music. I give Paul a lot of credit for inventiveness so I gave ithe overall album a 7, the same as you.
I like McCartney 1 much better than you and not just because of Maybe I'm Amazed. I love Every Night and Junk. I aso have a soft spot for Teddy Boy for a boy's love of his Mom. Man We Was Lonely, That We Would Be Something and Oo You are pretty good too. I gave it a 7.5
You know my thoughts about McCartney 3. I think it's the best of the 3. I like the "Deep" songs as you put it. I especially like Deep Deep Feeling. Love all the changes in the song and all the instruments. Besides Paul's beautiful piano, bass, and drums, I love those maraca's and shakers around the 5 minute mark. You mention Pretty Boys...one of my favorites. I love the overall performance by Paul...3 mintues of Pop Perfection. But the best part are the lyrics. Think about it...in the music world, the Beatles were the "original Pretty Boys. And I'm still singing "Seize the Day, Kiss of Venus and Slidin" to this day. I gave iMcCartney 3 a 9.
I actually like/love all 3 McCartney DIY albums. They just show how great a songwriter and musician Paul is.
PS. By the way, I agree with you that "Deep Down" on the new Imagined album is a better version than Paul's original . The original had too much "sameness" troughout the track but I appreciate what a great "soul" stomp it could have been. And I love St. Vincent's version of "Women and Wives". Annie Clark's bass and electric guitar solo really enhance the song plus her backgroud vocals are fantastic iimo. Those 2 covers are slightly better than Paul's originals in my opinion.

I may have to get back to you on that. I'll probably have to have the actual physical product, play it a few...or several....times to get a feel for how it/the songs all fit together. I knew on first listen that I really liked "Seize The Day"....and some others, but I won't know for sure and be comfortable with offering my opionion on all of the songs until July when I obtain the CD.....and play it loud, very loud, in my car!!

On my usual walk this morning, I was listening to Paul's latest "Sticking Out of My Back Pocket" on Spotify...this one having the theme of "Bird Songs". The first song that I heard on this playlist was "Single Pidgeon". What a great hidden gem, one of my absolute favs. Love Paul's singing and the lyrics. Love the line "Do You Need a Pal for a minute or two".
Love Linda's vocals too and that great piano. Allways wished the song was a little longer. Then I heard some of Paul's other bird songs like Bluebird, Blackbird, Jenny Wren, Winter Bird/When Winter Comes, and Morse Moose and the Grey Goose. A couple that were missed by MPL on this Playlist were "On the Wings of a Nightengale" and "Mama's Little Girl. Part of the lyrics on the last song are..."Singing likd a Skylark"on both versus. This is yet another song that didn't make it on one of Paul's original albums.

Thanks so much Oobu.
First impression....Dominic seems like a "real" person...down to earth. LIked the story with his girfriend's love of Paul McCartney. Good "live" performance and should help the album sales nicely. Should be good for Paul also.
I watched his live performance again this morning. I really like his ending on "The Kiss of Venus". His "fade out" with just his guitar was perfect and better than his original video on the song. James Corden is also so funny. The bit about Blink 182's Greatest Hits and comparing it to Seargant Pepper was so funny,

Is Paul in this McCartney III Imagined video?

YES and No. They used Paul's real face and de-aged it and used CGI. The body is a guy named Jordan Johnson doing the dancing. See credits at end of video.

While the "digitally de-aging of Paul in this new video of "Find My Way"l (featuring Beck) will probably get some initial buzz, I was a little disppointed with this choice as the 1st video to annouce the physical availability of McCartney III Imagined.
Since I have heard the entire tracklisting for McCartney III Imagined a bunch of times, I think there are only 2 tracks that are actually better than Paul's original album and tracks. They are "Women and Wives" by St. Vincent and Deep Down by Blood Orange. I would have preferred either one of those songs as the initial "Official Video" for the album. Here's what i love about those tracks:
Women and Wives - I love the overall production that enhances Paul's original. I love the "sax" spots and the electric guitar solo in the middle. I also love the bass and the piano at the end. Even a small change like singing the lyric line "Chasing Tomorrow" twice at separate times during the song. Finally I like Annie Clark's background "soul" vocals to Paul's main vocal which I love. This would have been my 1st choice for an initial full video of all the McCartney III tracks.
Deep Down - This version relly grew with me on repeated listens. I love the piano parts which sound a lot like Paul's "1985" song. Great groove to this version of "Deep Down". I also love the "synth" parts that are done so tastefully.
My favorite songs on McCarntey III Imatined are the ones that keep Paul's main vocals in tact which I think by and large very good.

Yeah,I did spot him crossing the corridor. I suspect he was knackered after that and had to go and sit down to get his breath back?
