Paul McCartney 2015 Rumors
-
This article says he was paid $3.5 million CDN for the Halifax concert in 2010: http://www.thecoast.ca/halifax/breaking-news-full-public-paul-mccartney-concert-costs-revealed/Content?oid=1605344 The provincial Department of Tourism spent $600,000 on last year?s Paul McCartney concert on the Halifax Common, and floated private promoter Harold MacKay with a $3.5 million cheque to cover McCartney?s artist fee. The payments have not previously been acknowledged publicly...The $3.5 million cheque to Harold McKay was cut because MacKay could not privately cover McCartney?s upfront fee. The full amount was recovered through ticket sales, but the payment raises questions about the province carrying risk for a private business. And as for how the tour money is allocated to crew, band members, etc., in the past I have posted details from a Rolling Stone article which had a $ breakdown of all these expenses from one of his tours - it may also have been from 2010. Gotta dig that one up again.

I think you can cut and paste tour rumors from one year ago and they are almost exactly the same!

As much as I love this man...doesn't it bother anyone on here that after fifty years in the industry, he still feels the need to make four million a show? I've paid $30 to see Paul in concert and I've paid $500 for a gold package to see him...I don't regret any of my experiences. But could anyone on this board imagine going to sleep at night with a clean conscience knowing how much you can net with ONE single concert and knowing how many people will never see that kind of money in their lifetime? It's quite a challenge to swallow that really. Paul can make in three hours, what the average Joe will never touch.
That's what I've always said about the soundcheck tickets...paying so much & not even an autographed cd or a drive by giving us all high 5s. 40 rows back for soundcheck & rows 2-7? for the regular show...for $1500.00. And sometimes they have 200 people at these?
Agreed! The amount of overweight unattractive people at these soundchecks is appalling. It is beneath us to be in their presence

Hahahahaha I give up after that one. I'll just go get some popcorn and watch the reactions in this thread, which has now been tarnished.

Finally! I've been very skeptical about him re-scheduling this quick it after the cancellation.

And neither do you...look I'm not sure what your beef is here but I took the time to explain why it would make sense for things to work that way, now if you prefer to think that Paul is exploiting his fans, his musicians, his contractors and the promoters that's fine by me.
Well, good then! It does make sense if only to make more money. And that is the only reason to charge more. Simple capitalism.
So, just to recap: Maybe Paul is keeping that extra money for himself, and maybe he is distributing it to his band and crew, etc. We don't know.

10 years of ... "I don't know how many of you know George was a really good uke player..." The band: (smiling through gritted teeth thinking "Oh man this story AGAIN?" Paul: "C'mon...work with me guys...I have heaps more money to throw your way." The band: "Hell yeah! Bring it on! Go ukulele George!!!"

Depends what we are talking about too, like the Stones, he/MPL must be producing the shows too so there is a lot of money coming out of that set fee, musicians, stage design, equipment, permanent personnel, etc... It's not like he gets $2/$3 million wired to his bank account shows up and goes home and the rest is SEP. That's what Chuck Berry used to do but he got paid in cash (before the beginning of the show) and not for the same type of fee
All I was saying, is that no one twisting Paul's arm to charge quadruple digits to die-hard fans and triple digits to people that just want to see Paul McCartney. That being said, no one twisted my arm and made me buy tickets to see him seven times. But it hurts as a fan...based off the facts and numbers I've seen, I do not believe he has to charge $250 (on average) for a top price level standard ticket to his concerts. But take the soundcheck example...that seat is theoretically worth approx. $250...and I'd say you get about $150 worth of merchandise, right? Who in their right mind, would value the soundcheck "experience" (which is all that is left after the previous two points) at $1100? That's Paul saying, I deserve $1100 for letting you sit at the back of the arena during my soundcheck. That soundcheck is happening whether you are there or not...it is not costing him ANYTHING to have you in there like it does during your concert experience.
-
I agree that the soundcheck is overpriced. I would never pay that kind of money for basically one hour of entertainment, even if it is Paul. Plus, the soundcheck doesn't come with any kind of guarantees. At least you know the actual concert will last between 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours, whereas the soundcheck can be anything from 40 minutes to 1 and 1/2, depending on Paul's mood that day, problems with the traffic or if he just turns up late for any reason. Nope. Maybe if I win the lottery...
-
But of course you all realize?and I know it's really lame and it sucks?that these high prices came about as a way to combat scalping. Artists and promoters, etc. saw what tickets were going for on the black market and said, "Hey, if people are willing to pay scalpers that much, why shouldn't WE get in on that action?" I think the Eagles in the '90s were the first ones to start that escalating cycle. The established artist that will buck that trend these days is all too rare.

It comes with the guarantee of an A1 primo seat at the concert, and that itself is worth the price, at least in my experience. And regards the soundcheck you are getting Beatles/Wings and solo songs that aren't played in the concert proper.

You are correct. That is the reasoning. But it is pretty cynical. Instead of saying, "We sell tickets for $50 and scalpers sell them for $200. Let's use technology and ingenuity to get the tickets straight to the fans and keep them out of the hands of scalpers." they say, "Scalpers are charging fans $200 for $50 tickets. Let's charge fans $250 a ticket and pocket the money ourselves." NOT cool. I know the argument is "If fans are willing to pay high prices to scalper, why not pay high prices to the artist?" Here is why: Most fans don't buy tickets from scalpers. But now, in a sense, EVERYONE has to buy their ticket from a "scalper" ie the artist. We have no choice. Except not to go. Which is the option I take.
