Set List critique

(Replying to Yankeefan2 set list)
I quoted the list and zapped away my own comments.
Helter Skelter would tear up a voice for future shows.
I am hoping that Paul's voice is perfect for all his concerts...this is only saying that if for some reason his voice is not perfect for one of the concerts...Paul may have to get creative by reinventing the way he does some songs with the song noticeabley lowered, having the band sing parts for a stronger strength in a chorus or a double tracking thing about it and some audience parts in a chorus.
hopefully he does some McCartney 111 songs to support his latest album. The "older voice songs" written more recently would also be nice to hear because the odds are he hasn't done them as much.
The list looks good, a few changes here and there possibly, but that would minor. I know that Paul will do what he wants and that is fine - it is still fun to play around with different set list ideas. For some strange reason Paul seems to have no difficulty singing Helter Skelter. It's the ballads like The Long and Winding Road and Yesterday that he's had to drop because he just can't sing them anymore.
-
He can -- or at least recently could -- still belt if a song's range is comfortable. "Helter Skelter" is raucus but doesn't have extremely high or low notes. And no one hearing it expects sweet, pure tones. But he could never pull off "Oh! Darling!" now. And yeah, the soft songs are where the thinness of his current voice becomes painfully apparent.
-
Realistically Paul has to stay in a song that moves around in a smaller, lesser or limited way. Any jumps - more noticeably the higher notes or changes in the song are the tripping points. I know that feeling of wanting to do what you used to do - as the person you are today and knowing you have changed and it is not the same, but you want to give it a try ...
I get a gut feeling that Paul will want to promote the songs of "Let It Be" / "Get Back" more than McCartney III. He could do 3/4 of the album when you think of what he already does off the album, it would be adding 2 or 3 and he is doing much of the album.
I want him to do well and hoping so.
My critiques are for the fun of the thread. -

My critiques are for the fun of the thread.I want to still play tennis singles against people in their 20-30's but know I can't do it anymore and now play doubles -lol. There comes a time you need to look in the mirror and just accept the facts that some things you just can't do anymore. There is no shame in not being able to do what you can do in your 70's in comparison to your 20's or 30's. Paul just needs to do songs that fit him and IMO that means more recent songs that were recorded when he was in his 70's. He is just fine on mid-tempo Beatle songs that are fairly short like "Love Me Do" and mostly struggles on ballads which Nancy pointed out prevously. If he needs to change the arrangement a bit on classic song so it is easier to sing, that is fne with me.

It's probably because Helter Skelter is mostly screaming.

I have noticed this too. Ninteen Hundred Eighty Five he sounds better than on Blackbird etc. Maybe his voice will be more rested for this tour? I dunno

Resting his voice doesn't help. It is just too damaged. I wonder if that is because he didn't take care of it properly over the years (not drinking water on stage for one thing)

He smoked for years, he did not drink water on stage and probably not before he went on stage. He toured too much and did long soundchecks as a money grab. I appreciate the length of his shows but he should have probably cut it down to 2 hours about 10-15 years ago.

With regards to Paul's voice, it was on a holiday in India in January 2001 that he lost his voice completely. Despite the positive comments he made in this 'Driving Rain' era interview, I don't think his voice ever really fully recovered so it was on this holiday that the damage was initially done.
"When I was in India, a carpet salesman ripped me off. He told me that this carpet was the rarest thing ever but when I got to the next town I found another 20 of them. So I rang him and during the argument, and not helped by the weather, I started to lose my voice. The following day it went totally. I couldn’t talk. With only a week to the recording sessions, I still couldn’t get the high notes. So I came to LA with my voice in quite a rough shape and decided to do the easy songs first, just to get the tracks down. But then I ended up just letting loose on one track, this monster 10-minute song called ‘Rinse The Raindrops’, where I really ripped it, and it all came good. It’s a nice quality if you can get it, a rawness. My voice has never been trained, so I just cross my fingers and go for it. I just wing it every time, like I always have done."

Wow! Never heard any of that before. However, when I saw him in concert in May 2002, he sounded fantastic! I was amazed at how great he still sounded. I hadn't seen him live since 1993.
This was the setlist that night (May 12, 2002 - I had floor seats about half way back)
- Hello Goodbye

- Coming Up
- Let Me Roll It

I think he's sounded fine on some albums too like Memory Almost Full, but since 2001 there has been a certain inconsistancy, and over the last ten years especially Paul's voice has become increasingly husky. I tend to notice it more when he's speaking rather than singing. But prior to 2001 I don't recall any negative comments about his singing ability. But given the long length of his career, and the hammering he's given his vocal cords over that time, I think he does amazingly well really. I guess the trick is not to make comparisons with past performances.

I agree, his voice was still excellent then. Think about it, he had not toured in 9 years so he was not putting lots of stress on it. Sure, he did a few small apearances to promote RDR album but they were barely 1 hour.
Looking back, that was the big chance Paul had of really mixing up hit set list with more solo songs. He had not toured in 9 years and had a brand new young band full of energy. Instead he started the pattern of mostly Beatle/Wings songs with a few songs off album he was promoting. Amazingly, there were no songs from RDR and FP album on that setlist which were done after his last tour in 1993. Still a great show but missed opportunity IMO.

Agree. He had to do Your Loving Flame in 2002 for HM of course. At least he DID do some FP songs in 2005.
I could have sworn he did Calico Skies but I can't seem to find it listed!

For the 2022 Got Back Tour, I don't think there will be any drastic changes.
I believe he will drop all the Egypt Station songs played during the Freshen Up Tour and replace them with 3 or 4 songs from McCartney III.
I think he will change the opening song...Hard Days Night held that position a few years.
Will drop Back in the USSR (for obvious reasons).
...and I think he will play Rocky Raccoon for the first time live.

What should he open with, do you think? I loved Hello Goodbye 20 (OMG!) years ago!
And if he does do Rocky Raccoon, we will have to have everyone listen carefully to the first line and see if they think he says "mining" or "mountain!"

Hello Goodbye was a great opener!
I also liked Eight Days A Week.

Yes I got to hear EDAW in 2013 and 2015 and HG in 2011 really good openers, though its usually towards the close of main set wonder if Paul would ever consider opening his show with Band on the Run and then go into say Jet or Juniors Farm. Would be a bit different!

As far as new songs for the "Got Back Tour" I would love to hear:
Sing the Changes (from the Fireman album)
I Don't Know (from Egypt Station)
Dominoes (from Egypt Station)
Happy With You (from Egypt Station; tribute song for Nancy)
Find My Way (from McCartney 3)
Seize the Day (from McCartney 3)
Slidin (from McCartney 3)
Early Days (from New and tribute song for John Lennon)
Friends to Go (from Chaos and Creation; tribute song for George Harrison)
In my opinion, this would be a true "Freshen Up" tour for 2022. At the same time, I don't think it would ever happen. He will probably do a new opener with an old Beatles' song and 3 McCartney 3 songs.

Would love any of these songs but since he has done "Sing The Changes" already, I would like to hear "Dance Til We're High" from "Electric Arguments. See PM.

Most of us on this board would likely rather ditch all the standards and go with the rarities and deep cuts. Here's that setlist:
Beware My Love
Flaming Pie
Too Many People
Soily
Spin It On
My Baby's Request
The Other Me
Say Say Say
Ebony and Ivory
Dress Me Up as a Robber
The Pound is Sinking
Here Today
Pipes of Peace
please...go on...
