Lewisohn's Book
-
I'm still reading it. It has taken me months because I put it down for a while in favor of other reading material, and then pick it up from time to time. I've been reading it every night for the past week. Just when you think you have read it all, this book goes way beyond anything you may already read know, sometimes a bit too much detail, but overall I am really enjoying it. I had no idea Paul was unhappy with the other bandmates in Hamburg during their first visit. (and vice versa, it appears) Only half way done...at this rate it will take a year to read the whole thing. I wish the next volume would come out sooner, while my eyesight is still decent.

Ringo played the Cavern. To the chants of "Pete forever. Ringo never!" But I'll take any Cavern date. The front line was the real show w Pete anyway. Maybe the show when they played the first part in their leather and the second in their new Brian Epstein approved suits.
I respect that. For me, I would like to see them in 1962, the fall, Ringo's been onboard for a few month, The Cavern, any date through the end of the year.
I think you misunderstood. What dappa-macca and I were saying is that we'd like to see them in the Cavern in '62, first with Pete and the leather, then later in '62 with Ringo and the suits/vests and ties.

Nancy, I was actually talking about the Fan Club Night, April 5 1962, when the Beatles revealed their new look. Pete was still in the band. From Lewisohn's book: The Beatles peeled off their leathers (!) during the interval and Bob Wooler prefaced their return to the stage with a big announcement: "The Beatles will be appearing in their new suits!" It was the same night that John got Fan Club founder Bobby Brown drunk and she kissed Paul (and then got sick). I love this book!

Now, THAT I would love to have seen, regardless of WHO is was drumming!

I forgot about that! Yeah, that would have been a great night to be there!

Im currently reading this book that I got at the library. Seems pretty good so far. When will the other two volumes come out anyone know?
-
I finished it a few weeks ago, and I agree 100% with dappa-macca. What's great is that it reads like a novel, but he doesn't make up any dialogue: it's all actual dialogue (or dialogue remembered through interviews) that he's dug out through his meticulous research. It's going to be years till the next one. Who can say how long, since this one was delayed for years itself. Sure hope he stays healthy!
-
I bet the next one comes out in 2016. It should be great!

Two years? Sounds about right that' usually how long it takes for Paul to make a new album no? Anyways I think this new book Im reading will keep me busy for awhile. If my relatives ask me what I want for Christmas this year I'll say yeah I want Mark Lewisohn's book Tune In!

You don't know how Mark L. has been researching for the entire book for years, I guess. He said (when part 1 came out) that he was 40% done with part 2 and 15% done with part 3. So, he's 56 years old now and said that the last (3rd) book might not come out until he's 70! We shall have to see!

Yeah sorry to say I don't keep up with news like this so often because of my busy schedule. Let's hope he can finish them though.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p022hsnk So yeah....prepare for the long wait and hope most of the first generation fans are still here in 2020 (vol.2) and 2028 (vol.3). After all is said and done Paul will be 86 and Ringo will be 88.

Wow. I'll probably be in my mid 40's by then Paul and Ringo are still doing well for their age so I think they will reach that age! I've got faith in them.

Cripes, a lot of us will be in our 60's and 70's then!! Both my parents are still alive (83 & 8 so I think, God willing, I'll still be around.

There's a long, fascinating interview with Lewisohn done Feb. this year, in the Blu-ray release of A Hard Day's Night.

Sorry to chime in late on this...yes, Mark stated recently he hasn't even finished the RESEARCH yet for Vol. 2, and I think I did read elsewhere that he tends to write sections as he finishes the research for them, so he's got chunk of Vol. 2 written but still hasn't finished all of the research. He said it took him ~10 years for Vol. 1 but hopes to shorten that (a bit) for 2 and 3. The thing is, the sheer volume of research materials is going to be exponentially greater for Vol. 2 and 3 since those were the fame years where EVERYTHING was written/said/filmed/recorded/etc so if anything, while those materials are more readily available and easily accessible, it should take him longer just because of how MUCH of it there is!

I just started reading the unabridged version! My God, John's grandfather (also John Lennon) had 3 wives and fathered something like 16 children, but 9 died in infancy. Alfred Lennon was the 12th child of his 3rd wife (who he finally married after Fred was born!) The 2nd wife died in childbirth.

I found it fascinated how many relatives were born to large families, out of wedlock, in multiple marriages, etc. You think of those times as very traditional, but so many of their (the Beatles) ancestors came from very interesting and non-traditional backgrounds.
-
I was surprised that Cynthia Powell got so few lines in the abridged version. Does he give more details about their steady dating relationship, marriage, or John and Julian's relationship in the unabridged version?
-
I thought that initially as well, but it's really a book about the Beatles and the abridged version is 800+ pages. Can you imagine if Lewisohn dug deeper into individual relationships with the detailed research that he does? I would be interested, but he writes so much just about the Beatles as a group already that it would take forever to read/write . I wonder if the unabridged version has a lot more of those details.
