At 80 I'm surprised he can remember the lyrics to the newer songs. Even at 67 I was struggling the other day to remember She's Leaving Home. I can remember all the right words, but not necessarily in the right order.
He uses a teleprompter to show him the lyrics. Someone on here spotted it ages ago in a photo MJ Kim took from behind Paul.

Good thinking on Paul's part

@yankeefan2
I agree 100% Yankeefan about his Setlist choices.It actually began earlier on his tour after Egypt Station. Again his choices for Egypt Station songs weren't any better. Paul continued to play "Fuh You" the worst song on Egypt Station and "Come On To Me". While the latter was better than Fuh You, it's still not close to one of the best tracks on Egypt Station. He didn't perform the best songs like "I Don't Know", "Dominoes", "Do It Now", "Happy With You", "Confidante" "Hand in Hand" etc. etc.
As a big time Paul McCartney fan, it did save me a lot of money. Living in Florida, I would have attended the McCartney 3 and Egypt Station tours but not with these Setlists. I've seen Paul many times but I want to hear mostly Paul's latest great songs. Terrible Setlist choices in my opinion.
Paul is my favorite Artist for the last 60 years and I don't like to speak negatively about him but I have no choice but to be honest. Back in 2002, I thought McCartney was the greatest "Live Musical Artist on the planet" but I no longer can say that. What current Artist doesn't play his best "new" songs? Crazy in my opinion.
-
The problem is that Paul's idea of his best songs is widely different than what we believe his best songs are from any album. I think he may have played "Who Cares" at a couple of shows but it was never in the regular rotation of the tour. This should have not only been played live but the first single from "Egypt Station". Upbeat song with great message in regard to current issue of "bullying". In previous post you mention he only played "Woman & Wives" from "McCartney III" instead of superior songs like "Find My Way", "Slidin" and "Seize The Day". Sadly, Paul has been making these type of choices for years. Imagine playing "Temporary Secretary" live instead of songs like "Take It Away", "Little Willow", "That Was Me" and Promise To You Girl".
You ask what other current artist does not play his/her best new songs, the answer is none.

@wandy
Most artists use teleprompter now not just older artist like Paul.

@yankeefan2
I totally agree what you say about "Who Cares" I didn't mean to overlook it because it is also a great song. In retrospect, it should have been the 1st single issued for Egypt Station. I agree wholeheartedly.As Yankeefan said, it speaks about a very relevant and timely subject in society today (school bullying). I think the lyrics are terrific as well as clever and smart. I love Paul's twist in the lyrics when he says
"Who cares what the idiots say
Who cares what the idiots do
Who cares about the pain in your heart
Who cares about you, I DO""Who Cares" should have been sung on every tour date instead of Fuh You. I would have been fine with the 2nd "double A" single being "Come On To Me" and "I Don't Know. Personally I don't think "Come On To Me" was one of the Album's best songs, but it did its job. It became a Top 10 Hit at the end of the day and helped the overall sales on the album.
In my opinion, I don't think "Fuh You" should have been on the Album at all. I think it was easily the worst song on Egypt Station. Some of the biggest critics also agreed. It's not only a bad title (everybody knows what the real title is) but the rest of the lyrics are terrible. The lyrics say nothing to me compared to the rest of Egypt Station where the lyrics are generally very good. "Fuh You" wasn't a good fit on the album and then Paul goes on and plays it at every tour date "Post Egypt Station"
In Summary "Fuh You" became the focus of "Egypt Station" instead of all the good to great songs on the album. Whoever talks about great songs like "Dominoes" or "Do It Now"? To give you an idea of the lyrics on "Fuh You", here is an example:
"Come on baby now
Help me work it out
I won't let you down
So you don't need to shout
I could stay up half the night ""
Playing with your head
I could stay up half the night
But I'd rather go to bed."As I said, the lyrics are very shallow and say nothing. It was a typical bad "Top 40" type song lyrically. Ryan Tedder specializes in these types of songs and he was listed as the cowriter on Fuh You".
Greg Kirstin was Paul's Coproducer on all the other songs on Egypt Station and all the other tracks were written and composed by Paul McCartney. That is why "Fuh You" in my opinion should have been "left off" of Egypt Station.
As I've said, Egypt Station sadly should have been a much higher renowned Paul Solo Album. I have consistently said that Egypt Station (minus Fuh You) is in the T0p 5 among McCartney's Best Post Beatles' Albums.

I did not like "Fuh You" either but could have lived with it as a single only and not on the album. I agree with you totally, the song did not fit in with the other ones on "Egypt Station". Album would have been better with one simple move, cut "Fuh You" and replace it with "In A Hurry" and or "Home Tonight".
"Come On To Me" was not one of my favorites either but it would have been much more tolerable if they cut the last 30-45 seconds of the song. It was so tediously repetitive at the end that IMO became annoying.
Paul missed opportunity with "Who Cares". With the right promotion, this song could have possibly gotten some traction with a younger demographic. IMO Paul looks much better singing about caring about bullied children than he does singing about wanting to get "laid".
-
@b-j-conlee If Paul had not changed the the song title from “For You” to “Fuh You” or had written the song when he was MUCH younger, I think a lot of people’s opinion of it might have been different. I also think he was trying to “recapture” his youth with that song and “Come On To Me” and they actually were well-received in concert. Some of the other songs you wish he had played were slower, somber numbers. I just think Paul didn’t want to do those type of songs.
I know this is an important topic for you, but you really should just let it go BJ. Paul is never going to do the songs the die-hard fans want. He plays to the general Beatles/Paul fans. Even if he comes to Atlanta again, I have absolutely no desire to see him again. I would rather watch a concert DVD from the past, which I have plenty to choose from! -

Totally agree about the ending of Come On To Me - none of it should have been there!
See my post to BJ - Paul, at 79, still thought he was a stud in his mind! I think a lot of us (myself included) still mentally feel 25-30 even though we’re much older! Only Paul had the fame (and cajones!) to write those 2 songs at his age! -
Fine if Paul at his age thinks he is still a stud but please leave that opinion with his wife Nancy -lol. The last thing most people want to hear is a man almost 80 singing about picking up a woman or getting "laid". I read a couple of reviews where they mocked him and basically said he looked like an old fool doing those type of songs. I guess we will agree to disagree.
I understand Paul playing those two songs live, they are upbeat and catchy. I just prefer "Who Cares" which is equally upbeat and IMO a better song.
I would not see Paul live again even if he came to Charlotte NC. I have heard all the songs he plays now several times and with a better voice. I know he is not going to play solo songs I would love to hear him play so why waste the time and money. The last time I saw him live was in 2010 when he came to Charlotte. The only reason I went (had seen him in 2009 in NY) was that my daughters wanted to see him and thought it would be cool to share the experience with them.

@yankeefan2
Agree 100% Yankeefan. Thanks to you and Nancy for your great input.
The tour I regret missing the most was the 1976 Wings Over America. This is when Paul intentionally did his Solo songs and only played 4 or 5 Beatle numbers. I tried and tried. I was working in NYC at the time and walked to the steps of Madison Square Garden. I was hoping to be able to buy a ticket from someone real cheap. I was married at the time and couldn't afford a full price ticket.
Years later in 2002 I could afford it and was able to see Paul "live" and "indoors" for 1st time. I was thrilled to hear so many of Paul's Beatle songs and some of his Solo hits too. Still as I was leaving the arena in Philadelphia, I was still thinking of great Solo Paul songs that he didn't do. Where was "Wanderlust, Somebody Who Cares, Young Boy, Beautiful Night etc etc. And this is when Paul could really sing. So many opportunities over the years that Paul missed to enhance his Solo Career. -
@njr
Getting back to McCartney 3 /Egypt Station and missed opportunities, Paul is still totally overlooking his Solo Career.
I had said earlier that after releasing McCartney 3, I thought Paul and Band should have replaced Helter Skelter with "Slidin". He has played the former many times and he has never played Slidin on tour. I would have loved to see the full Band playing this great rocker.
But Paul did a similar thing after the release of Egypt Station. On his tour dates he should have replaced the "Closing Beatles" Medley (Abbey Road Medley) with Paul's great Medley closing Egypt Station. In my opinion, Paul would have really made a statement by closing the show (with his Band of course) with "Hunt You Down, Naked, C-Link". I love this Medley and the Naked part is one of his best melodies ever.
Just think of the video hits on the Internet if Paul would had ended his show with that Medley. It would have really helped the "Sales" for Egypt Station. I think both of the longer tracks towards the end of Egypt Station are terrific. -
@b-j-conlee You’re never going to let it go, are you?

I DON’T disagree with you! I don’t think he should be writing those kind of songs at 79 or 80 either! I was saying why I thought HE did! In his mind he still feels young! He’s Paul effing McCartney though, so I’ll give him a pass on that mistake.
-
-
OK, my mistake -lol.
-
I saw WOA in 1976 at Madison Square Garden. Maybe I passed you (lol), looked a bunch different than I do today - ha ha.
-
Disagree with you about closing the show with something from "Egypt Station". This part of the show (encore) should be something the crowd knows very well and will be excited to hear. You can't spend the entire night playing a Beatle heavy setlist and then close the show with songs 95% of the crowd does not know. Paul could do it in 1976 (Soily) because it was Wings first time touring in the US and the audience was not expecting Beatle songs. It wound up being wise decision by Paul because "Soily" absolutely rocked, Paul's vocal was incredible, and the laser light show was awesome.
In the end, I wish Paul had made different song choices, but it was not meant to be. Who am I to tell him what he should play? In my own way I made my feelings felt about his song selection by not going to his shows anymore. Time to put this subject to "bed".
-
@yankeefan2
I only wished I was at that show. I've seen Rockshow a few times and I really enjoyed all those Solo and Wings. -
@yankeefan2
Hey Yankeefan...We'll have to agree to disagree on Paul playing "Hunt Me Down, Naked and C-Link during the encore of his tour after the release of Egypt Station.Paul is way too big of a star to worry about the crowd reception to a relatively unknown song to many among his audience. Besides Egypt Station was a very recent album and hit #1 in America for a week or 2. There would be a decent number of fans that would know it.
On top of this, if Paul was more interested in his Post Beatles career, he would understand that the biggest reason to play one of his closing tracks on "Egypt Station" is for all the videos that he would get on the Internet. From a marketing point of view, that would give him his best return because so many people would want to see it. As a big time Paul fan, I don't want to see a video on the Internet of Paul doing a Beatles song I have seen numerous times. And for the audience in the stands who were unfamiliar with the song, they might find out that it really rocks and the middle slower part "Naked" is even better.
It's crazy that the only Egypt Station songs he plays is Fuh You and Come On To Me while he doesn't play the really good ones.
