Top 5 Reasons Paul Frustrates/Annoys You
-
@toris LOVE Little Woman Love. Mary not so much.
-
@toris
Toris, I respect your's and Nancy's opinions but at the very least, you have to admit, it would have been nice to hear how these McCartney 3 songs might have sounded with Paul and his full Band doing them. In a similar way how much better I found the "Off the Ground" songs sounded to me after hearing them done "Live" with his Full Band on the "Up Close" Concert at the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC. -
I agree 100%. So many of Paul's songs sound so much better live. I think "Find My Way" and "Slidin" would have been "killer songs if he had played them on the last tour.
-
My number one frustration is the slow pace of the Archive Collection releases, the lack of archival live recordings and just the general state of his back catalog. The fact that some of his catalog is out of print is a disgrace. Forget about waiting until next year or the year after that, here are the releases that I believe we should already have in hand:
Archive Collection releases of London Town, Back to the Egg, Cold Cuts, Give My Regards to Broad Street, Press to Play, and the Flowers in the Dirt B-sides on CD.
Things that would be nice to have but we'll probably never get:
At least one unedited full show from each tour from 1972 to 1993 on CD and a one or two CD set of soundchecks from 1989-93.
Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen have been cranking out dozens of multi-disc sets of outtakes and live recordings along with regular releases of new material for years now, why can't Paul do the same?
-
The cynic in me says MPL really does not care much about the things you have mentioned. I believe things like CD of soundchecks, outtakes and full show from years 1972-1993 will not happen until Paul is no longer with us. At that time his estate will probably go into overdrive looking for anything they can market and make a few dollars.

Nancy
Mary Had a Little Lamb over Find My Way, Seize the Day, Slidin! Are you kidding me?
There is probably no one on this Board who loves Paul's Solo Career more than me but when I was putting my Flip Sides/Leftovers Proposed CDs together I listed plenty of Rare/Unknown Paul Songs but I never included Mary Had a Little Lamb.
It was a cute little Children's Type song but not one of his best Solo Songs by a long stretch. To each his own I guess. I have no remember that music is a subjective thing.BJ, why did you add my name at the beginning of your post? It was Yankeefan who mentioned the 2nd & 3rd songs!
And you JUST had written this:@yankeefan2
I realize that some on this Board don't particularly like McCartney 3 like you and me. I respect their opinions nevertheless. I'm still thinking how terrific songs like "Find My Way", “Slidin”, "Seize the Day", When Winter Comes,etc might have sounded on Tour with Paul and his "Full Band".HUH?
I did buy the picture sleeved Mary Had A Little Lamb when it came out, and I took it for what it was: a pleasant song he wrote mainly because his daughter’s name is Mary.
I have to agree with toris that nothing he has written in the 21st century is as good as the 20th century. Flaming Pie (1997), for me, was his last really great album. “Beautiful Night” was as good as anything he wrote in the ‘60s. “No More Lonely Nights” (1983) ranked up there as well. It’s a damn shame he never did those two songs in concert when he could still sing them! -

We will have to Agree to Disagree Nancy about McCartney 3. Yes, a couple of the tracks (like the "Feeling" songs) could be considered "C" Grade but the specific songs I mentioned in my Reply to Yankeefan are very very good imo. The main reason I was so disappointed in the absence of "Find My Way", "Seize the Day" "Slidin" etc. was I wanted to hear how those songs sounded "Live" with the Full Band and Paul. Unfortunately we will never know because Paul went back to his Beatle Songs (And Wings Hits) we always get. I can only imagine how great a rocker like "Slidin" could have sounded. Instead we got "Helter Skelter" again that he has done a hundred of times.
Here you are again mentioning my name when I wasn’t even discussing McCartney 3! It had to be either Yankeefan or toris your post should have been directed to!

I also have the pictured sleeved Mary Had A Little lamb, but I reckon I bought it from a second-hand shop sometime in the mid-80's, well after it was released.... and yep, agreed, as many as great songs Paul has written in the 21st century, they just don't measure up to his great pre-Y2K catalogue..... I'll get in trouble for that, but.... there is no definitive song over the last 23 years. Nothing that compares to what he did in all those years before.... Still love Paul, though. But, his legacy won't include a lot of what has happened since Flaming Pie.

Probably me!... I've never been a huge fan of McCartney 3.
ps. I'm not sure how you got dragged into my comments! Ha!

Nancy...Please accept my apology over my McCartney 3 vs. Mary Had a Little Lamb post. I should have "not" included you because the criticisms regarding McCartney 3 actually came from Toris and not you. In rereading all the posts on Yankeefan's Topic (5 Top reasons Paul McCartney frustrates you), I now can see it. Again I apologize Nancy. After I posted my sarcastic reply that should have gone to Toris Only, I added in a follow-up post to say that music is "subjective" and how much I might disagree with one person's opinion, I have to "respect" their right to disagree with me. I love both you and Toris (my fellow Macca Nuts) and on this type forum I have to realize that there will frequently be differences in various opinions. Sorry again. Thanks -

Where would we be if all we agreed on everything!?.... We're all agreed on one thing... We love Paul.... And I love your passion.... All good, mate!
ps. McCartney 2 shites all over McCartney 3..... sorry, couldn't help myself. xx
That being said, I'm probably in the minority that like Temporary Secretary, Dark Room and Bogey Music.... One of These Days is wonderful.... Summer's Day Song very underrated.... it is quite a beautiful song. Very underrated.
Not to mention Coming Up.
All better than 90 percent of what ended up on McCartney 3....
Sorry, BJ.... I couldn't help myself..... I still love ya.... xx
Not to mention "Waterfalls".....

For the record, I think "McCartney II" was the worst thing he has ever recorded since "Wild Life". It was mind boggling to me that Paul played "Temporary Secretary" live and not hundreds of better songs in his solo career. As for "Mary Had a Little Lamb", I agree with Nancy, cute little children's song and IMO nothing else. The 2000's have been a very good songwriting time for Paul IMO and I think music critics will agree. CHAOS was freaking brilliant and as good as anything he has ever done; it was just not a very upbeat commercial album. All his other albums this century have been critically praised. Once again, to each their own with musical tastes.
Back to the topic of this thread. Another thing that frustrated me was that Paul actually toured too often. It used to be an "event" when he toured and then it just became so routine that he was playing again. To make it worse IMO, he would start giving his tours these "stupid names" to justify another tour which was basically going to play 90% the same songs as the last tour. His constant touring IMO damaged his voice which effected how he sounded not only live but in the studio.

@toris
I know you requested 14 and I hope you don't mind, but I'm doing 30. Here's my Top 30 McCartney Songs in the 2000's (21st Century)
Before my list, let me add that I'm looking at both Lyrics and Music.
(In any order!)- Jenny Wren
- Friends to Go
- Too Much Rain
- Riding to Vanity Fair
- This Never Happened Before
- How Kind of You
- Ever Present Past
- Only Mama Knows
- House of Wax
- You Tell Me
- The End of the End
- See Your Sunshine
- That Was Me
- I Don't Know
- Who Cares
- Dominoes
- Do It Now
- Hand In Hand
- Alligator
- Early Days
- New ( the song)
- I Can Bet
- Save Us
- Find My Way
- Slidin
- Seize the Day
- Winter Days/ When Winter Comes
- Kiss of Venus
- Your Way
- Magic
Just my opinion, but I think his songs from the 2000's by and large are every bit as good as his 70's, 80's and 90's. I will go one step further...with the exception of a few of his "over the top" signature songs like Hey Jude, Here There & Everywhere, Yesterday and All My Loving, I think his songs in the 2000's are close to being on an equal basis as his Beatle Years. Of course, Paul does screw things up from time to time when he puts "crap" things on albums like Fuh You. That brings me back to Yankeefan's Topic...Talk about why Paul can be so frustrating sometimes.

It took me a while to appreciate McCartney 2.... certainly not on its release....But I was besotted by Coming Up... even if it did have an earlier earthing....Took me years to appreciate that album.... Didn't like it on first listening... I actually used to hate Temporary Secretary, but as the years went by.... I think McCartney 2 is underrated.... but, never liked it on first listening.... Wild Life?,,, Probably not his greatest.... Yet, I find joy in it.... This being said, I'm not a fan of the original McCartney album.... Still confused as to how the magnificent Maybe I'm Amazed found its way on there.... out of place... John's first solo album shites all over it. As does All Things Must Pass.. Chaos is a wonderful album.... Probably one his best.... But so even and wonderful.... great songs... but no song that jumps out as a "legacy" song.

I'll need some think music, BJ! From a quick glance, Too Much Rain might've made its way on to a Beatles album. And definitely Your Way. That is a wonderful song.... Straight on to the White Album.

@toris
Great points Yankeefan. As you and I both said, "music is subjective". What I might love, there's always somebody else who feels the opposite or close to the opposite. I shouldn't have lost it when it was suggested that "Mary Had Little Lamb" was better than "Find My Way, Slidin or Seize the Day." They're only songs for God sake!
I also agree with you 100% that Paul was touring way too much. It was no longer an "Event"
As you said. With the constant shows and mostly the same songs and the same Paul stories, it weakened the quality for us hard core fans especially with some of his Setlist choices. -

Well, for us Australians.... we didn't get any over-touring!... alas... from my time... we got him in 1993... the first time he had toured since 75 (I think).... I was too young to know.... I was at both concerts in 1993.... the second one, I was three rows from the front at the MCG..... awesome.... had to wait until 2017 before he came back again!.... and yet.... my mum to my left (who saw the Beatles in 64 in Melbourne) and my daughter to the right (who knew how much I loved the Beatles)...... we were in the stands, not three rows from the front..... but three generations of fans.... best concert ever!
-
@toris
In Australia (in 2017), did Paul perform Mull of Kintyre at your show. I went to about 12 Paul Shows in the US but unfortunately I never witnessed Paul perform "Mull." If yes, describe that experience. -

A massive highlight of the concert..... and I still love the look on my daughter's face when the fireworks went off during Live and Let Die.

@b-j-conlee Apology accepted!
