Paul had a terrible fight over Let It Be with the other 3 and they would not budge. The album was released with the Spector versions over his objections. He did not take it lying down and the others fought back. He lost. The culmination was him suing to dissolve the Beatles partnership to free him and the others from Allen Klein's management. It lead to the total disintegration and all the public infighting for several years after that. Let It Be was finally released the way it was originally planned as Let It Be...Naked in 2003. Spector's version of The Long and Winding Road was The Beatles last number one single and sold several million. Obviously you can't argue with success, and Lennon really liked what Spector did. So the original version is on all the hits packages and the original Let It Be album is still available. I like the version with horns on Wings Over America best.

Yeah, Let it Be Naked got played once by me, then tossed in the trash. I had such high hopes.

I like both versions. (plus, I would never throw anything Beatles-related away!)

Yeah, sacrilege, I know. I was looking for it last summer and then remembered it got tossed when I was cleaning out the garage a long time ago, and for some reason, I started tossing CDs in my car that I never played. It had been in there forever.

Fan reaction outside of Apple on April 10, 1970, being asked by a reporter about the Beatles' breakup:

Granted, they are "apple scruffs," and they are a bit harsh toward Linda! Interestingly, Yoko isn't mentioned; I thought for sure she'd be a target, too. (The young man at the end doesn't say anything.)

The "man" you mention was the interviewer. They were just filming from the girls' POV. (this was raw footage, not edited) Only the first girl (Margo?) was correct when she mentioned Allen Klein. How those girls blamed Linda is beyond me. If any wife was to blame it's Yoko!

That's been refuted over and over by everyone including John and Paul. It was not the wives fault. John broke up The Beatles in Sept 1969. Paul announced it to the public 7 months later.

John decided to quit the Beatles, mostly because he wanted to do his thing with Yoko. I still believe, as do many others, that Yoko played a significant role in the breakup. The other 3 could not stand the fact that John had her in the studio with them, and that caused tensions. Do you seriously think that if John had never met Yoko he would have done some of the things he did? Hell, he might still be alive today! Who knows? The other part was the Allen Klein vs. the Eastmans thing. Have you read You Never Give Me Your Money by Peter Doggett? You should if you haven't. He goes into great detail on the whole thing and clears up a lot. P.S. Of course John would say that Yoko didn't break up the Beatles! And Paul, I know said it too recently, but he's just being PC (you know Paul) I can't say on here what Paul probably really thinks of her.

Yeah, May Pang's account makes John sound like a POW (Yoko's). And, what's his name on Sunday morning at AROTR said she stalked John until she got him. He also said she broke up the Beatles b/c before she went everywhere with him and annoyed everyone, the four would have spats, but would always make up. He said he believed they would have patched things up had she not been involved.

I went for the first time last May. The draw for me was Peter Asher and Peter Noone. I have a picture of me with Peter Asher made at the backstage cookout. They called Peter Noone away almost immediately to warm up. Herman's Hermit's was playing next, so almost no one got their photo taken with him. But, Peter Asher was the one I went there to meet, and I did, so I was very happy. Mission accomplished. My next trip is to London, possibly this summer. I want to meet Paul McCartney.

I think Yoko's presence in the studio didn't help, but I believe it was the Allen Klein situation that really sealed it. They were at an impasse as to how to proceed as a business.

As it turns out, Paul was the only 1 in the band right about Klein. I never heard the other 3 ever thanking Paul for forcing the band to cut ties with Klein. If Paul went along, who knows how much stolen $$ & years of lawsuits would have resulted....

John also reconciled with Paul around '74 and it started rumblings that The Beatles might reform. John said anything was possible around that time. It never happened of course, but it could have had he lived. The barriers were broken.

...one thing I've read is that John seemed to harbor some resentment towards George Martin because he thought Martin spent more time with Paul in the studio than John. Martin says that was because Paul spent more time in the studio than John in the latter years of the Beatles. I've seen that as a reason why Spector produced "Let It Be" and not George Martin.

My understanding as to the reason they went with Spector was because Martin when given the tapes told the Beatles essentially that he couldn't work with what they had at that point (the kind version), so Spector was "given the look" and after a lot of Spectorization things were pieced together into what we now know as Let It Be--probably why Naked sounds so pieced together from multiple takes. I guess George Harrison must have at least been impressed as Spector later went on to futher add his "signature sound" to All Things Must Pass. Too bad they didn't release a "naked" version of this album as ATMP really sounds like a Spectorized "wall of sound." When Paul called him regarding producing Abbey Road, Martin only agreed to produce it if he could act as a proper producer on the album. There are those on this forum that seem to have a need to dispute each of my posts, so I'm sure we'll be hearing differening points of view on this very soon. LOL

That's the way I heard it as well...and additionally, if there was any bad feelings between George Martin and any of the Beatles while they were still together, from what I understand, it was George Martin who felt a bit jilted by Paul via the 'She's Leaving Home' sessions...Paul couldn't wait for George to become available so he brought his piece elsewhere for the production work

In a Rolling Stone interview George Martin said he was told by the Beatles that they wanted "Let it Be" to have a raw sound. John then gave the album to Spector to "tidy up a few songs" Spector then proceded to add strings and women's voices without any input from Paul. George Martin might have been miffed at Paul for the "She's Leaving Home" flap, but it didn't stop him from working with Paul on the rest of "Sergeant Pepper" tracks and later on "Live and Let Die".

I too heard that John contacted Spector after GM said the bits and pieces they gave him were sub par. Who put the doves in the beginning of the version of Across The Universe that was eventually nixed?
