"All Things Must Pass" as a single album
-
The general consensus seems to rank "All Things Must Pass" as George's best solo album, a conclusion I've never agreed with. It's always struck me as half a great album and half a rather tedious one (I'm not even considering "Apple Jam" which I played once in 1970, put away and forgot). While I don't generally like threads on music forums in which people rearrange the tracks on artists' albums (I generally believe in trusting that musicians know what they're doing better than I do), I've always thought ATMP would be a kick-ass single album, so after 50+ years of stewing over this, here's my 1-CD version of ATMP:
- I'd Have You Anytime
- My Sweet Lord
- Wah Wah
- If Not For You
- What Is Life
- Behind That Locked Door
- Apple Scruffs
- Let it Down
- Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)
- Awaiting on You All
- All Things Must Pass
Feel free to tell me if you think I'm insane.

@bruce-m You are NOT insane! Totally agree with you!

@njr Thanks!!!

Yeah. I have that very same listing as my single version of the album. Works for me.

Yes you are, since you asked.
Beware of Darkness is one of Harrison's greatest songs. I would definitely include it along with Run Of The Mill.

No accounting for taste. To me, "Beware of Darkness" is the quintessential preachy dirge of the sort that makes much of George's solo work such a slog.

@bruce-m My speculative take on ATMP is that there is strong material which still reflects his working with Paul and John. The tinny, uninspiring production by Phil Spector very much detracts from its greater potential although it was highly successful. George did not want the album to sound Beatle-ish due to his ego and short-sightedness. The bass and drums are not as melodic as our ears are used to. Many of George's Beatle songs have negative topics which may need why certain songs did not make the intended albums, such as It's Only A Northern Song, Not Guilty.
