Run Devil Run 25th Anniversary

Forgive me if there's already a thread for this but 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of McCartney's seemingly forgotten rock and roll album, Run Devil Run. It's always been a personal favorite of mine and is just BEGGING to be reissued on vinyl. Although it seems unlikely McCartney's camp will even acknowledge this album, here's hoping that I'm proven wrong and we see a new release for it. If they can repackage Band On The Run every few years they can at least put this one back in print...

@jwjames I have always like this album as well. I especially enjoy hearing the rapid-fire delivery of the lyrics of the title track which could be easy to stumble over. I had hoped he would do this song when heplayed in Atlanta in 2002 since that is where Miller’s Drug store is, or was?, and that was the source of the Run Devil Run vitamins but, alas, it was not played live.

I've loved Run Devil Run since I first heard it. Even though it's mostly covers, it's one of my favorite Macca albums. It works simultaneously on 2 levels: It's both a great, fun, crank-it-up-loud rock & roll album and at the same time it's a musical walking tour of the stages of grieving. Absolute genius.

It was a drugstore called Miller’s Rexall Drugs and I doubt it’s still there. I live 35 miles from Atlanta and haven’t ventured in that area since I was in college 1977-1981!
And it wasn’t vitamins, it was bath salts.Found this online:
We've moved from our original location in Downtown Atlanta to our new store in Decatur, GA. You can find us now at 4584 Memorial Dr, Decatur, GA 30032Fun fact: Decatur, GA is where the offices of Beatlefan magazine have been located since 1978!

@john-mackintosh I actually went to college around the corner where that drug store allegedly was but never successfully located it (this was before Google Maps after all). I do remember the local news reporting on when he was in town for an event his stepdaughter was throwing. It was that same visit where he wandered into that shop and got the "Run Devil Run" song title.
-
Bath salts it is!
My wife and I tried finding it on the day of his 2002 Atlanta concert but couldn’t locate it, instead finding construction equipment and road work. I got the impression it is no longer there.

Did you go to GSU? I did - it was just down the street from the Rexall! I used to catch the bus there at Five Points.
P.S. Paul & his daughter Heather (not step-daughter: he adopted her) were in Atlanta Jan. 7, 1999. They were here for a showing of her pottery at the Merchandise Mart. -

You did read my entire post for its new location, didn’t you?

I have said it a few times so forgive me for repeating myself. I wish Paul would have done a full tour with the RDR band in small venues. He could have played the entire album for the first set and take short break. The 2nd set could have been some early Beatle classics and maybe throw in a couple of his solo songs he had not done since he last played live. Oh well.

He had so many missed opportunities over the years!

True, alas, and much of what we've all hoped for he couldn't pull off now. But best to be grateful for what we've gotten from him and not dwell on what we didn't. That said, if he ever did want to do a show like this, my newish hometown of Hilo has a great venue for it, the Palace Theater. I know folks who work there if Paul needs an intro!

Never had much luck locating that drug store sadly.

I got my BS in Nursing at GSU in 1981. Remember The Library which was actually a restaurant? (but had lots of books in it) And that great pizza place on the corner near Five Points?

I graduated in 2003. Not sure if those places were still there while I attended. The last semester before I graduated they actually opened a little pub called Sidebar right next to the School Of Music. Probably best I graduated when I did because I probably would have attended that little bar too much.
Fun fact: near the beginning of the movie Baby Driver the lead actor actually walks around the School Of Music. It was quite surreal.
-
@jwjames Oh, yeah, I’m sure both places were gone by the time you graduated! My son graduated from there in 2010 with a BA in Video & Film.

I have a soft spot for this album because it was the first Paul McCartney solo album I purchased on CD as well as his first album I heard when it was originally released.

I'm just bumping this thread up in the slim hopes someone in McCartney's camp will see it. Even if they did a limited vinyl reissue that would be satisfying. The album is more significant than it is given credit for. It helped Paul get through his grief over Linda's passing, and got him performing live again more actively than he had been in nearly a decade. It also doesn't hurt having David Gilmour as his guitarist. And vocally Paul sounded amazing as he really cut loose and didn't hold back.
It's the album's 25th anniversary and I don't believe I'm alone in wanting to see it get some proper attention and recognition.

Yeah not only is Run Devil Run one of my favorite McCartney albums, it's one of my favorite albums by any artist period. Obviously it's not his best work creatively speaking, but it is just a straight-up fun album to listen to front-to-back and everything about it worked. It has been said before that some of Paul's most satisfying work comes from when he isn’t trying too hard and I'd say this album along with Flaming Pie are good examples of this.
I truly do hope McCartney's camp consider revisiting this one soon. It deserves a little attention.

That would be great, but the attitude of Paul and his team toward his later material seems to be pretty much "file 'em and forget 'em." It drives me crazy.
