"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions
-
From the 5 Paul gigs I have seen, there has always been different songs played each time and would prefer for that to remain. Wanna hear the new songs (whenever that'll be!) and ones like Michelle and Birthday, he never seems to play them in the UK, usually just in Canada & France. I'm sure they would go down well in other countries too!. On a positive note think he's got 'The Out There' show pretty much on the money, classics like Eight Days a Week and We Can work it out, plus deep cuts such as Mr Kite, Lovely Rita, Hi Hi Hi and Your Mother Should Know going along side the usual main stays. I would say Paul has the pick of the bunch, and hazard a guess that more surprises will be featured throughout his touring schedule.

How 'bout this? Why don't we just have Paul ditch his band and join 1964? :
I agree. Why not add more songs from the last...oh say 30 years? More solo songs...please!

For me the current setlist needs: *less Beatles 'deeper cuts' played every single tour in spite of major things like 'Can't Buy Me Love', 'For No One', 'Here There And Everywhere', even 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'. *less of the 'sing-along clap your hands'-factor, 'Ob-La-Di' AND 'All Together Now' is overkill *less Beatles 'deeper cuts' in spite of some of the - luckily since March 2010 we can't say 1970 any more - post-1976 output. Even two will do. Rotate them. *one 'Come And Get It'-like shocker. The man is no jukebox. When you are playing so many smash hits the 'mass' can surely 'sit through' one or two for them lesser known songs, which are just as good as most of his Beatles output. It would cement his solo years even more. *one or two 'surprising rotation slots', like he now sometimes does in the encore. Not that much of an effort regarding repetitions. Could be 'Getting Better' instead of 'Paperback Writer'. Not that much of a stretch.

Again, I wouldn't mind if here and there Paul played some cool covers from the sound checks, like TWENTY FLIGHT ROCK, HONEY DON'T, BLUE SUEDE SHOES, etc. Just throw 'em in at random! Shake things up, mix it up a bit.

I LOVED the setlist on this tour! I can understand everyone else's opinion on this, I will say though, he plays roughly 37-38 songs. He could just go out and say screw it and play only 22-24 songs. I think we are lucky he gives the fans value for what we pay and has the energy to put on a great show still.

For my part, I just enjoy coming here and talking about possible songs that could be added. I am not so much criticizing. This tour does have a great set list. I will venture to say that every tour Paul has done starting since the 70s to today has had a great set list!

Oh I wasn't criticizing, believe me like I said, I totally get it. There are songs I'd LOVE to hear and in fact Paul does seem to listen to what his fans want to hear, little by little he adds different things we've asked for (Junior's Farm, Lovely Rita, ETC) so this actually benefits both him and us to freshen up his set. I am just happy he does play so many great songs, I saw both Clapton and The Who and while they were great shows was no where near the length of set or just the shear number of songs. Paul totally has it over everyone else and gives his fans value.

Beatle songs Paul can potentially play: IWANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND SHE LOVES YOU HOLD ME TIGHT WHAT YOU'RE DOING ANOTHER GIRL WHY DON'T WE DO IT IN TH ROAD WHEN I'M 64 BABY'S IN BLACK IN MY LIFE OH DARLING
Of those songs and in my opinion, the best ones in concert would be: *What Your Doing (Good rocker) *Oh Darling (Don't think he could do it vocally anymore however) *I want to hold your hand (love to hear how this one would sound; I think with his bandmates supplying good harmonies that it could go down well *In My Live (considered John's 1st great song; Paul does say that he wrote the melody...one of the very few songs where John and Paul dispute the origin. John did admit in his '69 Rolling Stone Interview that Paul did help him on the melody; Paul could perhaps do it as a tribute to John but I'm not sure he would want to drop Here Today) 2 other Beatle songs (his songs) he hasn't done are: *Rocky Raccoon (like When I'm 64, I don't think these would be good concert choices in big arenas or stadium; more small venue type songs *Martha My Dear (as a piano driven song, this might have potential to go down well The song I would actually love to hear added the most is his Solo song: *Young Boy (just think this one would be great live; I remember he did this on his Oprah appearance and the audience went nuts).

I was reading the program last night and in the pages where they interview the band, they ask each one which songs they would like to play and Brian said one is Back seat of my car and he said they rehearsed it a few years ago which I found very surprising.

Yup, The Stones were playing 22 songs a show on the 50 and Counting Tour just finished, 19 at the big shows Glastonbury and Hyde Park. Paul doesn't have to play 3 hour gigs. He just seems to love it! Lucky for us!

The US Tour if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I remember reading that on here a few years ago. When the Ram re-issue came out we all thought he was gonna play it at that Mexico City gig he did just before it!

That is my favorite Ram song. Wow. Just the idea that they've actually rehearsed it is awesome. I've often wondered what's been rehearsed that hasn't made the cut.

A lot of songs that are in the set now were rehearsed from as early as the US tour (and some that were played recently but dropped) Venus and Mars/Rock Show...Come and Get it...Hi Hi Hi...Junior's Farm The big one for me that never made it out was NO MORE LONELY NIGHTS.
-
I think Paul has the songs most wanted, but won't be played live played right before he comes out to get us in the mood and we can at least hear them in some capacity. Goodnight Tonight, With A Little Luck, No More Lonely Nights, Uncle Albert, Silly Love Songs.

Very true. The interviews with the band from the last 10 years in which they talk about this subject are sounding like some unrealistic fan dream list, but... Most of those songs made the cut in the last few years! The future is looking good.

Even if he lowered "No More Lonely Nights" a mere half-step, it wouldn't blemish the song's beauty one bit. And hasn't it been a while since David Gilmour and Paul shared the same stage? (hint, hint)
