"New" Reviews

BJ, Rolling Stone did give the album four stars. The magazine's out, it just hasn't been posted online yet.
Brett, Are you sure it wasn't the small review they had on "New" the song itself. It sounds strange if the issue is out with a full review and they don't have it On-Line. Anyway, I hope you're right. I would be thrilled if they gave the album 4 stars. thanks

HERE WE ARE...THE WEEKEND BEFORE US RELEASE DATE Any day now we shoud be seeing the big "national" US music reviews on "NEW". The big 3 in my mind are: Rolling Stone US Today People All 3 are big and could have a significant effect on the overall sales of NEW (not just the 1st week) because they have such a large audience and wide demographic. I'm not talking about us boardies or Paul's fans buying the album but casual baby boomers and younger generations possibly buying "New". Positive reviews from these 3 will have a lot to do with NEW potentially having "legs". Here's my rundown (predictions and hopes) of these very important reviews: Rolling Stone - First of all, the 4 star review mentioned on this thread was actually for New, the song. The actual RS Review has not come out (maybe on line tomorrow night). The review on the single was good (4 stars) so maybe this bodes well for the album. My RS Prediction My guess is that RS will give the album a good but not glowing review. Not sure that their top managment would allow it even if one of their reviewers loved it. I'm thinking that RS is too concerned with their "hip" reputation and Paul doesn't represent that image. Paul is too Pop for them even if his Pop is good. Neverless, a good review from RS would certainly be a victory. My RS Hope I obviously be thrilled if it was a very good to excellent review (i.e. 4 stars) ____________________________________________________________ People Magazine - largest weekly magaine and it has a definite Music Column in all its regular issues (along with Movies and TV). Chuck Arnold is their music critic. Looking at the photo of Chuck, he appears to be in his mid-40's or a little older. Reading his reviews on a regular basis, I think that Chuck prides himself on keeping up with all the current trends. He seems fair and he gives good grades on quality music no matter what the genre. 2 Weeks ago he gave a very good short critique on "New" the single (4 stars I believe). My People Prediction Based on how Chuck liked the song "New" and how strong the early US and Canada reviews have been, I predict that Chuck will give the album a good to very good review (3 to 3 and 1/2 stars) My People Hope Chuck goes bonkers and gives NEW a 4 star review. _________________________________________________________ USA Today - the biggest USA daily newspaper that has a regular NewMusic Feature every Tuesday. Compared to the other 2 publications, I have less of a feel for what may happen here. Like RS and People, it can be very significant. I would have a better feel if I knew that their regular rock critic, Edna Gunderson, would be doing the actual review. I recently noticed that Edna did not do the review on Elton's latest just a few weeks ago. Elton's album was reviewed by Jerry Shiver who I don't know from a history point of view. If Edna ends up doing the review, I would be confident again judging by the early US reviews that Paul would get a good, favorable review. My USA Today Prediction Regardless of who does the review, I think USA Today critics as a whole are fair and NEW will get at least a good review (i.e. 3 stars) My USA Today Hope Paul get a very good and highly favorable review (4 stars) ___________________________________________________________ The key here is that Paul gets a good, positive review from all 3 publications. If that happens, New might have legs and be the biggest Solo album of Pauls since Tug of War. Crunch time is definitely here. PS If anyone sees the RS, USA Today or People reviews On-Line before their Publication Date, please let us know. thanks
The notion that Rolling Stone management wouldn't allow a strongly positive review of New is a load of hooey. Check out their 4-star review of "Chaos," which actually reads like it could almost be a 5-star review: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/chaos-and-creation-in-the-backyard-20050922
Bruce, You've proven me wrong. I now remember this one. I like Anthony De Curtis. Seen him on TV several times. He seems fair and not full of himself. I remember the month before this Review, RS had Paul on their cover and did a nice feature. Think is was also written by Mr. De Curtis. Maybe that is why Mr. De Curtis did the actual review. Just not a fan of Rollingstone as a whole but I sure hope he gets a good review. Reading the review on Chaos brought back great memories. Still love Chaos. I think Chaos is right up there with BOTR, Flaming Pie and Tug of War as Paul's greatest Post Beatle albums. I am hoping that "NEW" is up there with those.

You left out "Entertainment Weekly," one of my favorite magazines--it too boasts a huge circulation, is very popular and prestigious among entertainment fans--high hopes of a glowing superlative review in that. "Us Weekly" owned by Jann Weiner, Rolling Stone's editor is also quite popular and ubiquitous. Hope they love "New" too. In England if NME "New Musical Express" extolls "New" and grants its blessing, that would be a tremendous boon to the album, along with "Mojo" and "Q" digging it, these latter two ran big features on Macca fairly often and appreciate him (unless I'm wrong and out to lunch on this). Not sure about hipper than thou NME, for the au courant hipsters and the very latest thing, always singing his praises. Hope they dig it--also that the New York Times and Times of London does And "Paris Match"--still have a soft spot for France, thinking they've got good taste. We're leaving out huge journalistic venues in other parts of the world... Latin America ought to go ape shite ga ga over "New," he's so loved there, for example. Or are they hung up on the Beatle phase of Paul's career, mainly caring only about that

Actually, I believe the Washington Post is as influential as the New York Times. Waiting for that one for sure.....I live in the D.C. Area..... Regarding the RS Review, I believe where it places the review...in the roundup/write-up with respect to where it places the one on Pearl Jam's new album is as important as what the review states.i.e., who gets the more important position in where the write-ups are placed in the magazine...Top billing.

I posted earlier in this thread several RS reviews and DR got a four star review. They found some faults but loved his bass playing and vocals. EA also got 4 stars although the actual review is quite short.

yes--The Washington Post and L.A. Times, and Variety and Billboard should have love fests for "New"

Yes, good reviews from all of these would be great. Us Magazine dropped doing music reviews a couple of years ago so I don't think you will see much on NEW from them. Another really important one that I mentioned much earlier in this thread is the Wall Street Journal. They are, of course, national and they have a great entertainment section. WSJ's demographics are great for Paul...full of professional people (young and all) who are all familiar with the Beatles and Paul. Their music critic is Jim Fusilli. Mr. Fusilli had a great, positive review of Kisses which gave a real boost to the album. Looking forward to what he says about "NEW".

I have the issue. 4 Stars and a great review for NEW.

For "New" to have legs, Paul has to have a hit single from it. Great reviews will help, but many people just read 'em and forget about 'em. They need to be reminded about it constantly when they actually hear songs from it on their radios. That sinks into their heads and is crucial as to whether they will buy the album. Younger fans support Pearl Jam automatically. With Paul, it's a bit trickier at this point in his career. His album will be a hit. But will it hang around on the upper end of the charts after the first two or three weeks? That's the stickler and million dollar question!! :

Young people don't buy albums. They download songs. For the album to do well, a number of the songs have to be "cool" enough to download. Seems the buzz on NEW is just that. A LOT of cool songs to download. That may be enough to give NEW legs, but then again if the older baby boomers who loved The Beatles so much also buy NEW, that would also insure a big hit. We'll find out next week.

All Music gives New 4.5 stars They have been big McCartney fans since Flaming Pie and have consistently praised his latter day work. http//www.allmusic.com/album/new-mw0002578565

Unfortunately, there's no sign of a hit single. "New" did decently on AC and Triple A formats but is fading, in part no doubt because of the introduction of "Queenie Eye" -- which has yet to make a significant impression on radio.Top 40 radio hasn't touched McCartney in 20+ years, and it's hard to see that changing. I'm not a fan of "Queenie Eye" as a single, much as some on here love it, but it's what we got. Addendum: I finally broke down and listened to the sample of the studio version of "Save Us." THAT should have been the single.

I haven't been overly impressed with the live versions we've heard before. To me, it's a song asking to be in the soundtrack for the next Marvel Avengers or some other superhero movie. 'cause in the heat of battle you got something that'll save us save us now. http://www.broadwayworld.com/videoplay.php?colid=593184 OTOH, Queenie Eye has really grown on me after repeated plays.

Bruce, You made my day with this one. It is the anti-Guardian review. Loved the fact that he loved "On the Way to Work". I remember another review that thought this was the weakest track. I also like the fact that he thinks that "New" (the song) may be the weakest song because the others are so damn strong. I get this. I like the single New but it is just so commercial sounding that I think after a few listens, you might get tired of it. This critic just basically is saying that there are so many good and deeper album tracks. If some of the other, bigger publications come out with reviews even close as favorable as this one, I will be thrilled. PS I also think that Save Us would have been a better 2nd single. In my opinion, It fits better in the commercial rock format than Queenie Eye. I think the latter will be a very good album cut however after hearing it on the radio.

Hi everybody out there ! I've just stumbled across this Board googling..I wasn't aware it still existed with the relaunch of Paul's New Website etc. Sorry for interrupting the thread but is this still a Part of PMcCOM? I thought this had vanished a Long Time ago, and i don't particularily like the fold Out Message boards ON the New PMcom.
