An album of new material at 74/75... It'd wanna be good. I fear he's pretty much dried up. Prove me wrong Paul.

Well, as others have said, Pure McCartney is not really for hardcore fans, it's for casual fans (young or old). He's probably not too concerned if we don't buy it, because we're the ones buying the Archive sets. But of course, I'll buy it because I'm one of the harder of the hardcore. I won't get the vinyl, but I do NEED the CDs. But that's just me. Call me an April Fool if you like. And I am hoping that perhaps there is something unreleased in some way here. The most notable "rarity" so far is that this is the first official CD release of "Hope For The Future." Thrilling, I know!
What casual fan gives a rat's arse about these songs? I mean, really? By this logic, Paul's set list would have most of these songs, to expose the 90% of casual fans who are attending his shows these days to these songs. It will be interesting to see how this does. Some hardcore fans will buy this, and some will give it a pass (like me). Casual fans will buy this thinking they are buying a CD with Band On The Run and Silly Love Songs. Or they will read the track listing and pass.
There is a market for this. Casual fans may buy Pure McCartney for the songs they recognize, but if they discover one or two obscure gems, that'll make it worth it. I am stunned by the short-sightedness of you guys. This is a BOLD acknowledgement; Paul McCartney is doing what we've been waiting on the man to do: Acknowledge his friggin' solo catalog with some genuine thought. True, some essentials are missing, but plenty of others are there. Sweet Lordy, this is a good thing, people. Let's hope it influences his stale concerts.
I like your optimism, and you're always happy to see his solo output pushed. But from where I see it, Martinez said it best: the casual fan won't give a rat's arse about this.
When I say casual fans, I mean people who are intrigued by his hits and want to dig deeper, but not buy all his albums, just getting a sampling. Audi is right, people have been saying for years that Paul should have a collection that acknowledges his more recent work, and now here it is, and suddenly that's a bad idea? Of course, everyone will have different ideas about what songs to include, but aside from the absence of FITD songs (which I'm sure is a bit of a cynical ploy to make that Archive reissue more marketable this fall), I think it is a good sampling of his career. If any one of us came up with our own track listing, there would be people who would pounce on it for some reason or other. It's not an exact science.
Yeah, I'm sharpening my knife right now to have at this or that list!!!!!

Ouch and this also reminded me of MAF's horrible mastering, possibly the loudest/most compressed/saturated album ever!

Pure McCartney is definitely a better and more complete compilation than Wingspan and Wings Greatest, but it has a big flaw. I think Paul the rocker, the amazing screamer, his aggressive side, is very underrepresented. But that does mean, things like Silly Love Songs or Ebony and Evory are going to be included too. And yes, those songs are catchy and have their charms, but they are so undeniably a bit corny and oversweet, and an argument for those who see Paul only as a light pop entertainer. So you need more balance, and put some hard stuff to show his other side. And We All Stand Together, is a great children song, but people usually don?t take it in the right context, and has become something damaging for Paul's legacy, so I think he should have omitted that one in Pure McCartney (Mary had a little lamb was a hit too, a nice children song, but is far from his great material, and Paul wisely hasn?t included in any of his compilations, and I think he should do the same with WAST). In pure McCartney,I will also include some performances of his live albums (solo material, of course), to show McCartney evolution as a live showman, and especially because some live versions are better than studio originals ( We got Married and Let Me Roll It, for example) It?s cool that He wants to conquer his casual fans, but they won?t buy a 4 Cd compilation (Is a good idea for Spotify though, where people can hear it for free). His diehard fans, like me, will buy it, if he add a fifth disc (for the same price) with some unreleased stuff or rare material. I know, supposedly more archive remastered albums are coming, but when? The schedule is going slow. And I?m not entirely sure that Paul will give this treatment to Back to the Egg or Red Rose Speedway, for example. And don?t get me wrong, I love both albums, especially the former. He also could have created more interest to project, if he would have to let the fans choose, at leas,t 5 songs for this collection, using his website, Facebook , Twiitter accounts. He should have included something from Flowers on The Dirt and Driving Rain. And a couple rare b sides and rare good singles like Long Leather Coat and the great hard rocker Whole Life. For The 2 cds version, he should construct a solid testament for his solo legacy, so has to be more well curated and oriented to include his best stuff rather than his greatest hits. The Back seat of my car, for example, is a cooler song than Ebony and Evory. If you wanna to ?sell? McCartney (solo artist) like a complicated, amazing and versatile composer to the new generations, you need more than a cool album cover. I know everybody have different tastes, and their own favorites. Probably some people will hate some of my selections, and Paul and his team made their own. He created the music, so he has the right to choose whatever he wants. But I think few people will defend the inclusion of Bip Bop or Great Day, for example. When Paul dies, Pure McCartney will be the starting point for many future fans, so he needs to show his melodic and sweet side, but also his tougher, experimental and rockier material. This would be my tracklist for Pure McCartney: THE 5CDS VERSION DISC 1: 1. Maybe I'm Amazed 2. Oh Woman Oh Why 3. Jet 4. Beware My Love 5. Listen To What The Man Said 6. Dear Boy 7. Lonely Road 8. ____________________________________________________ Eusse, As a hard core Macca fan, I have little to no excitement over the actual Pure McCartney after reviewing the 67 song compilation. With an artist as prolific and diverse as Paul is, where is the imagination and diversity to this compilation. For the most part, it is a paint-by-numbers selection process by looking at a Wikipedia Listing of McCartney post beatles Top 40 songs. And, if you have been buying the Archive Collection/Remastering Series (which I have) you already have close to 50% of the songs. As I have said on previous postings, I don't think Pure McCartney is going to do well sales wise. The package is strictly designed for the casual, Baby Boomer Beatles/Macca audience but on the whole, they don't seem to buy CD's anymore. Only a guess on my part but my gut tells me it won't be a successful product relative to sales. Your imagined 5 CD compilation on the other hand is a package I would buy in a "New York minute". It is very creative and imaginative with Lots of tracks I would love to have for my car or home CD player. And agreed, Paul the Rocker is often overlooked. I think Music critics who know Macca's strengths would love your compilation whereas most will unfortunately pan the actual Pure McCartney as being too much of a overdone "hits" package. I also think that a compilation like yours would sell well because it appeals to the "true" McCartney fans who are looking for great rare and overlooked tracks. Off the top of my head, there are a few tracks I would really love to add to your compilation, ...The Mess, On the Wings of a Nightingale, Give Ireland Back to the Irish, About You, and What It is. At the same time I would have dropped some of the hits on your list that are already on other compilations like Let 'Em In, My Love, Ebony and Ivory and Pipes of Peace. Overall Eusse...great job. If only Macca would hire us. I really believe We would do a better job!
-
Yes, a very nice job, eusse, I think it's actually better than the official one. But it is what it is. Or it is not "What It Is," haha. I still think the official one will sell well, and remember, in these days, sales do not necessarily depend on people buying the CDs, or even the complete downloads. This collection will be prominent on iTunes and Spotify, because it will be the most recent one, and people will download or stream the tracks that interest them, and some people will be adventurous and pick songs that they don't know. But anyway, if a ton of people download or stream, say, "My Love" from this compilation, Billboard will count that as album sales, and it will propel Pure McCartney to a higher chart position. That's just the way they do it now, as strange as it may seem. And "playlists" on the streaming services are popular, so if this collection is perceived as a playlist, it could get a lot of plays, and some of the songs could win new fans. Just a thought!

So.....back to the title of thread...when you think Paul will be releasing a new album. It's been a few years.
Yes when will Paul release an album with fresh new music? Having bought all Pauls' albums as soon as they where released there is no need for me to buy this Pure McCartney album. I don't like it when they mix up all the songs from different albums.

I reckon he has one more album of new material in him. After that I suspect all posthumous releases.

Maybe a song or two for a movie or project. Reality is he's about to be 74 years old.

In my world, reality is that you don't exactly give up or shrivel up at 74. Possibly you could say that about his touring schedule (if he was getting exhausted all the time) but your brain doesn't shut down just because you are 74.

Just my gut feeling. Hope I'm wrong. But, there comes a time in everyone's life where you've exhausted your new ideas and where you simply can't do what you used to do or you don't have the same desire. Maybe he's there. Maybe not. He's certainly already had more output than most people. Touring is probably physically exhausting but doesn't take a lot of thought or creativity either. Even if he wrote new songs, not sure his voice can handle too much anymore. He doesn't seem to take enough time from touring to do much of a project anyway. Then again, rusty mentioned working on an album. So, hopefully my gut is wrong. But, I'm also ok if we have all the songs we're going to get. It's more than enough. I only want a new album if it turns out to be a near masterpiece. Not popular opinion, but I think it's time for Paul to rest on his laurels and just enjoy his living legend status. No more songs with modern artists and no more songs for video games, etc... It's like an athlete. It's hard to give it up at the right time and most end up sticking around too long. Retirement isn't necessarily a sad or bad thing. It might be time.
-
Many interesting comments. ↑ Well considered post.
-
Well, then, I suppose if it's time for Paul to rest on his laurels, then putting out a compilation such as Pure McCartney is exactly what he should be doing. But no, I don't think he's about to slow down. Even though his voice is increasingly being supported by his band members' backing vocals, he still has tremendous energy and enthusiasm onstage, and he has bottomless curiosity for all things musical. People have been marveling at his ability to keep going at such an "advanced age" since at least 1986. I doubt that anyone then would have foreseen him doing stuff like "Save Us" in his seventies. Barring some sudden medical setback, I don't think he'll be stopping for quite some time. Even if he completely loses his voice, he'll keep making music as long as he's physically able to do it. He's likely to outlive this forum, I'll wager!

Back in 2010, at the age of 74, Buddy Guy put out a song called "74 Years Young" on his Grammy Award-winning studio album, "Living Proof" (
.) Six years on, and a few months shy of 80, he's still maintaining a healthy touring schedule with 55 confirmed dates ahead of him between now and August (http://www.pollstar.com/resultsArtist.aspx?ID=73154&SearchBy=buddy%20guy)..) In the meantime, he has released two more studio albums, including another Grammy winner, "Born to Play Guitar" in 2015. So, maybe Paul will follow Buddy's lead? By the way, Buddy has also toured Australia 3 times since 2010. -

Pure McCartney is definitely a better and more complete compilation than Wingspan and Wings Greatest, but it has a big flaw. Probably some will hate some of my selections, and Paul and his team made their own.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, B J Conleee, I'm sure we would do a better job. I think his team are probably good marketing guys, but no necessarily Paul McCartney?s experts. And I think the problem lies there. In Marketing, is very important to know your product (in this case, Paul McCartney?s music) like palm of your hand. I agree with you, it?s better to drop some, not all, of his overexposed soft hits like Pipes of Peace and Let ?em in (but no way masterpieces like Jet, Live and Let Die, Band on the Run?), and include other interesting songs. I originally thought include About You too, but that song is too much about Heather Mills, but let?s pretend Paul would be ok with it . Lonely Road and Rinse the Raindrops are more about Paul facing the death of Linda so I included them. I agree with you about include The Mess, Give Ireland Back to The Irish (one of the few examples of ?Political Paul?), On the Wings of a Nightingale ( for the unreleased disc), and What it Is ( a bit of more Run Devil Run is welcome). B J Conlee, I think we have a very similar taste in Paul?s music. This is my new version, without some of the overexposed soft hits, though I think my original list with all the hits included is very good option too: THE 5CDS VERSION DISC 1: 1. Maybe I'm Amazed 2. Oh Woman Oh Why 3. Jet 4. Beware My Love 5. Keep Under Cover (for some representation from The Pipes Of Peace album, because in this new list I let go the title track and Say Say Say) , replace Listen To What The Man Said 6. Dear Boy 7. Lonely Road 8. My Brave Face 9. Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey 10. Alligator 11. Long Leather Coat 12. Another Day 13. Young Boy 14. Jenny Wren 15. Too Many People 16.

Though I would like Paul to continue if he is able, I tend to view retirement as a positive event. I'd be happ for him if he decided to hang it up now. Nothing left to prove. Good timing IMHO.
