Set List critique

Those PID people can’t even get the year right! It was 1967!

My list of most wanted songs that either haven't been played before, or haven't been played in a long time. Also some consideration to which would sound better live (ie. I'd love to see Monkberry Moon Delight played live but I don't think it would come off very well)
-Venus and Mars/Rock Show (not since 2012, seems like the perfect mainstay of a live setlist)
-The Song We Were Singing (would be a nice replacement if Paul ever wanted to do another John tribute)
-Little Willow
-Waterfalls
-Heart of the Country
-With a Little Luck
-Put It There
-My Brave Face
-Jenny Wren
-That Was Me
-Wanderlust
Obviously doesn't include Beatles tracks of which I'd have many suggestions

I know, that's why it's so hilarious!

I hope Who Cares and Letting Go are played for the L.A show in July. I swear I'm gonna melt if he sings Letting Go. Love the guitar melody on that one! Those two are my favorite songs.

That's alright, they're fantastic chestnuts.

I don't think he could do Take It Away anymore.
And Bruce, I doubt he'll drop Let Me Roll It because it was mentioned here somewhere that it is one of Nancy's favorites.
I don’t know - Take It Away is not sung in a very high key. I think he could still handle it.
I bet Nancy would be the only one who could influence his setlist choices. He would listen to her. Wish one of us had an “in” with her (or even her cousin, Barbara Walters!)
Or even her son, Arlen.
I'm not a singer so I don't know the correct terms for this but I don't think it's the high notes he can't get (IMO) but it seems to be the longer more melodic phrases. This whole section..
Lonely driver
Out on the road
With a hundred miles to go
Sole survivor
Carrying the load
Switches on his radio
It’s the high notes. The lyrics you listed are not that high and I really think he could do it. What do you think Yankeefan?
I agree Nancy, I think he could still do it.

He could do it, but it likely wouldn't sound very good.

As Yankeefan, Bruce, Nancy and I have said countless times before...HERE WE GO AGAIN!
As we all know, 2019 begins the 2nd big phase of Paul's "Freshen Up" tour. Hopefully this phase will "truly" promote his 2018 highly successful Egypt Station album release. In March of this year, he starts with shows in South America. Then only a couple months later, he begins the huge USA segment of "Freshen Up" in New Orleans. Some of the shows I personally could attend because of their location would be:
Raleigh NC (May 27)
Greenville SC (May 30)
Lexington KY (June 1)
For me however, it all depends on the setlist we will see during the upcoming South America dates. If we basically see the same setlist that we saw in 2018 (including the rotation songs), I will not spend the money for sure. I say this considering I've seen Paul about 12 times since 1990. What I primarily want to see are "more Egypt Station" songs that I think are "realistic" given his age and that he skipped last year at the beginning of his announced "Freshen Up Tour". To do that, I wouldn't even mind if he dropped "Fuh You" and maybe "Come On To Me" from last years setlist. What I want to really see are any combination of the following:
I Don't Know
Happy With Youi
Confidante
People Want Peace
Hand In Hand
Dominoes
Back in Brazil
Do It Now
Caesar Rock
Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link (would be great as a closer in my opinion)
_____________________________________________________________________
He doesn't have to do all of the above but at the very least, 4 or 5 of them. If I saw something like this, I would be at one of the above US shows in a heartbeat.
For the 2019 shows, Paul doesn't have the "we didn't have time to rehears them as a full band" excuse anymore. In 2018, he had a #1 album in many countries in the world and many of these new songs better fit his 2018/2019 voice than his older songs (Beatles and Wings). And to do a true "Freshen Up"tour, he needs to do a good smattering of his newest songs at the very least in my opinion. I don't want to see Paul and Band regurgitate the "same non-signature"songs that he can do in his sleep. This segment of the show would be for the "true fans" and not necessarily for the 1st or 2nd timers. They will be plenty happy with the real signature songs that understandably Paul has to play.
I have given up on the idea that Paul would dust off some of his best "Solo" songs that he has never done (e.g. Take it Away, Little Willow, Single Pigeon, Ever Present Past etc) but at the very least he should do a bunch of his latest songs from his #1Egypt Station Album. I will give him a "gentle" pass for doing just 3 Egypt Station songs last year (for the reason he gave) but if he continues in the same mode, I will just skip Paul in 2019. I hate to say it since I'm such a big fan, but to me continuing with basicially the same setlist would would be a smack in the face to the "real" fans.

I absolutly understand you or better feel in the same way. After reading the setlist I canceled my hotsoundpackage for krakow concert last year. I didn't regret my desicion but i regret that fans like us "are forced" to choose this kind of protest due to this sad setlist situation.
Pure Mccartney show from Tim Christensen demonstrates that even a setlist without any standard setlistsong works very well. On the other side McCartney could easy arrange a real new (freshen up) setlist with beatles/wings/solo songs because there are so many songs -never or at least not performed in while. Thinking about songs like: sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band, penny lane, your mother should know, martha my dear, what u're doing, a taste of honey, she loves you ... every night, uncle albert, too many people, single pigeon, bluebird, jet, call me back again, beware my love, with a little luck, cafe on the left bank, getting closer, so glad too see u here ... take it away, wanderlust (lower key), pipes of peace, no value, my brave face, put it there, hope of deliverance, ... I don't know, confidante, happy with you, dominos...
-
I bet the March concerts will feature almost the same setlist as the latest European tour. If there's any change, it will be "Back In Brazil" performed at the Brazilian shows.
-
I'm with BJ. I'm pretty sure Come On To Me will stay because it was fairly successful on radio, and Who Cares will stay because of the video. But he should plug in 2 or 3 never-played Egypt Station songs beyond those. The possibilities are nearly limitless. Do it, Paul! ("Do It Now" even!)

BJ, I will be willing to bet you and adult beverage (lol) that it is the same set list as he did in 2018. The only thing I think will change is he will do "Back In Brazil" during the South America dates, that is a no-brainer (lol). Once he gets back to the US, he will stop doing "Back In BraziL".

Unfortunately, that is my prediction too. As I said above, there are a few shows that I would love to attend (and could attend!) but he has to really "refreshen" the Setlist to give me that kind of motivation. If he does do "Back to Brazil" in South America, then there are little to no reasons that he shouldn't subsequently do a few other new ES songs at his US shows later this year. To me, many of these songs would actually be easier for the Band to perform than "Back in Brazil".
If our predictions hold up, then in my opinion, Paul is just "mailing it in" and playing for the 1st timers. That's the easy way out since he will "sell out" regardless of what he plays. One of the reasons why we are such ardent fans is the wide variety of songs that Paul has written over the course of his entire career. To hear the same Beatle and Wings' songs time and time again is not the reason we are passionate fans. To do only 3 ES songs (and 2 of the 3 are not the best ones in my opinion) is a disgrace to the true fans who are always buying his products. I would rather hear 6 to 8 ES songs than to pay money to hear so many of the same songs that he has been playing over the last 8 years. Yes, he has to play the real "signature songs" but so many that he constantly plays are not.
I should not anticipate what Paul actually does regarding 2019 Setlist until they occur, but like you, I just have a bad feeling. Here's hoping that we're both wrong.

BJ, it is kind of sad that we have gone from wishing for great solo songs that he never did live to hoping he does more than 3 songs from his current album which entered the US charts at #1 -smh. As you have stated before, there is no freaking excuse to say now that he did not have time to rehearse the new songs. In addition, years ago he had no problem doing 5-6 songs off his current album and his audience was filled with mostly first timers on those tours. I totally agree with you that if he does not do 5-6 songs from "Egypt Station" it is a disgrace to those who buy his solo albums year after year. Like you, I could drive to Raleigh NC (about 3 hrs from Charlotte) but I am not going to waste my time/money for this current set list. Just because I am curious, I will check the threads when he starts the tour over again. Once he plays one or two nights, I will know whether it is worthwhile to follow the other shows on the tour.

Yankeefan,
I think we will know from the South America dates. If he only does "Back in Brazil", then I wouldn't waste the money or time on the US shows. If he does Back in Brazil and/or 3 or 4 more ES songs (not including Fuh You, Who Cares and Come On To Me) I would probably want to try to attend one of the 1st group of US shows that are much closer to Tampa FL.
Raleigh, Greenville SC or Lexington KY for us would be nice cities to visit and my new Wife has never seen Paul. It would be great to meet you and your wife so let's keep in touch once we see his setlist for the South America gigs. Again, assuming that he does more ES songs (on top of what of the 3 he has been playing) and he keeps his live "horn" section (Got to Get You Into My life and Letting Go sounded great) then I could see us taking a drive trip to one of those cities and stay in the area for a couple of days. That would be enough of a "refresh" to certainly perk my interest. The other reason that I might consider this tour is that it might just be our last opportunity. I can't forsee Paul touring very much after this tour except for special shows in the largest cities that would no doubt be very expensive.
I will definitely be looking at the setlist for South America and staying in touch with you.
PS Did you get a chance to get the 2 Disc Set of Red Rose Speedway at Target. The bonus disc is worth the $20. price alone.

BJ, even with only three new "Egypt Station" songs it might be good idea for you to go again mainly because your wife has never seen him and it would be cool for you to share the experience with her. My wife and I did basically that the last time I saw him when he played in Charlotte, my daughters had never seen him and we wanted to be with them when they saw him. I think I mentioned I am officially retired now (as of Jan 1) but still pretty busy and have not got around to checking out RRS. It will now be on my "to do" list. Let me run, my wife has a few questions regarding booking trip to Italy and Greece in September.

Yankeefan, thank you for not quoting the entire conversation with BJ!
P.S. I agree he should take his wife to see Paul, but isn’t it too late to get 2 decent seats anywhere?

^ Sometimes they release some leftovers a week or so before the show.

There is always the secondary market if you have money to burn (lol) or as "oobu24" mentioned, they release additional seats.
