McCartney 3, 2, 1, a new documentary series

Pretty sure it didn't happen until the great Wings Over Amercia.
You'd think they'd both know that.
Someone will tell me if I am wrong.
Reading between the lines a bit, Paul did say it was that tour....1976. He said it took him five or six years after the breakup for him to feel comfortable playing Beatles' songs. And even then he was quite particular on which ones he selected. That would have been the Wings Over America tour.

And they discussed Live and Let Die as well.

Sadly if the SEQUEL goes like I predicted above, it would be largely a waste of time for a hard core fan like me.
Here's the way I would like to see McCarteny 3,2,1 (2nd HALF) Presented:
Starting wiht the 80's, I would start a discussion with Paul on the whole Album of Tug of War. I would ask questions and play snippets of great Tug of War songs like Wanderlust, The Pound is Sinking, Somebody Who Cares, Take It Away etc. That could could lead into Pipes of Peace (the song) and the great wartime Video of Pipes of Peace.
My next question for Paul would be about the failure of Press to Play and Broad Street in the mid-80's. I would talk about his writing sessions with Eric Stewart and play snippets of great songs like Footprints and Stranglehold. I would even ask him about a great unreleased song like "Yvonne the One" and how it was left off Press to Play.
You could briefly go back to the end of the 70's, and ask Paul about the relative failure of Back to the Egg and why. Play snippets of Getting Closer, Arrow Through Me and even a great hidden gem like Winter Rose/Love Awake.
Next you can get into his relationship and writing with Elvis Costello. Ask if he ever considered doing a whole album of just Paul and Elvis Costello (bringing up all the demo's he did with Elvis and later putting them on a 2nd Disc on the Flowers in the Dirt Remaster)
After that you could ask about how he dealt with the Death of his soulmate (Linda) during Flaming Pie. Again, they could play snippets of great songs from Flaming Pie like Beautiful Night, Somedays, Young Boy, LIttle Willow etc.
Ask Paul about the making of Run Devil Run and playing special shows with that great Run Devil Run Band (including David Gilmour).
Going into the 2000's, you could ask Paul about the tensions of working with Nigel Godrich during the Chaos and Creation album. Similar to an earlier question, you could ask how he could leave songs like Summer of 59 and This Loving Game off the album.
You could ask about his remembrances of the follow up Album called Memory Almost Full and about the personal songs on Memory Almost Full like The End of the End, That Was Me, Ever Present Past and a great "extra" song like "Why So blue".
Finally and getting into the 2010's to current times, you could ask about his recollections on the "New" Album (Songs like Early Days), Egypt Station and his latest... McCartney 3. It would be easy to have Paul compare the 3 McCartney DIY albums including the last one in 2020.
So many questions but if this "2nd half" of McCartney 3,2,1 was handled the right way, it could be even more fascinating than Part 1 (more about the Beatle Years) because people in general know so little about his Post Beatle Career with the possible exception of the 70s Decade. The key I believe would be Rick Rubin or whichever host would be leading the discussion. In my opinion, it would have to be someone with great knowledge of Paul McCartney musicially from 1970 to 2020. That's like 50 plus years which is far longer than Paul's one Decade with the Beatles. Thanks
I would love what you have suggested for a sequel but doubt it would happen. McCartney is very happy talking about his "Beatle" days over and over again. Sure he will mention something outside of the Beatles if it was a commercial hit (Maybe I'm Amazed, Silly Love Songs etc) but digging deep into his solo career is not something he seems to want to discuss. Sadly, I believe he really does not think people are interested in the things you mentioned. Life goes on -lol.

Sign me up as being pessimistic and knowing what BJ suggested would never happen. If I want to watch anything about the Beatles it will be something like the "Get Back" documentary. If McCartney is being interviewed, I could care less about Beatle stories, have heard enough of them for close to 60 years. No problem with people who want to hear more about the Beatles, just not my "cup of tea" -lol. BTW - My wife and I are planning to visit London as part of a Northern Europe trip in 2022. We usually stay at "The Rubens" hotel (near Buckingham Palace) which we love and they have a great afternoon tea -lol

Good point Beatles4Ever. I forgot to mention "Live and Let Die" in my reply to Nancy. That was another really good section on McCartney 3,2,1. As I said, I also loved seeing John and Paul harmonizing on "Baby's In Black" whicih even as a "lower tier" Beatles' song was GREAT.

When are you going to London? Will you go to Liverpool in Aug. for Beatleweek? We just canceled 2021 and will rebook the 2 hotels first and in Oct. the flights.

As always, I appreciate your comment but personally I don't think I'm being pessimistic. i just want a "possible" 2nd half Sequel to this Series to go as good and interesting as possible. And yes, I have Hulu and have watched this Documentary. I saw the Episodes on Maybe I'm Amazed as well as Waterfalls, Band on the Run etc. They were some of the best bits imho. One thing I greatly admire about Paul is his honesty. If he's asked the right questions (and that's a big if) he would give good honest answers imo. As a big Post Beatles Paul fan, I don't want the "emphasis" on a 2nd Half Sequel to be about Paul's collaborations with high profile artists like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and even Kanye West. Hopefully, you would want discussions to also be about projects, albums that didn't go well. You would hope the other moderator would point out that even those projects, albums that didn't turn out commercially "successful" had some wonderful and great songs/music on them. Get Paul talking about the good stuff on Back to the Egg, Press to Play, Broad Street etc. I wouldn't mind a question or two on the big hits like Silly Love Songs or Ebony and Ivory but everybody already knows about those big winners. In all honesty, some of the "huge" Singles like E&I, Say Say Say, Silly Love Songs in general put Paul on a quick "down path" for a while. People/Consumers are fickle and get tired of hearing the same songs on the radio all the time. Hence, that's what happened to Back to the Egg and later with Broad Street and Press to Play. On a Docu-Series like McCartney 3, 2, 1... I would think the ordinary public would be far more interested in things that weren't successful and didn't go nearly as well as planned. Another thing I love about Paul's entire music career is his "resiliance". When Paul was having his bad commercial streak on the Charts in the mid 80's (Broad Street and Press to Play) he didn't pout and go home. He continued working and writing music as hard as he could. He kept on trying. He started working and collaborating with other newer artists like Eric Stewart and Elvis Costello. That brought out (again my opinion only) some of his best "hidden gems" in his career. That is what I hope people in general would realize from a Documentary like this. He was far more than just Silly Love Songs and My Love, That is what I hope a Docu-Series like this would do for Paul. It is another reason he needs an Updated Compilation like I've been recently preaching.
The Beatles music is so universal that it isn't surprising that the reviews are relatively very good. But even a song like "Baby's In Black" (one of their admitted 2nd tier songs) went down very well in this docu-series because people find the 2nd tier songs so interesting.
Thanks and sorry for my tirade yesterday.
I meant I thought you were being pessimistic about them discussing his solo career properly if they do future episodes. Sorry, I understand what you would LIKE them to do, but I'm being pessimistic/realistic that it ain't gonna happen. ️

We would be in London probably around Aug 15-17th if all goes well. Day trip to Liverpool is one of the things we would like to do if possible.

Why aren't you going later to Beatleweek? We are going to fly Fri. night Aug. 19th, arriving the morning of the 20th. We've already seen a ton of the London sites, so will take the train to Windsor and on to Henley-On-Thames. It is such a neat little town! And last time, in 2016, because 2 guys made everybody late by getting lost by Penny Lane + the bus had to stop to cool down/add water to radiator, we didn't have much time in Henley, so want to eat lunch at the Row Barge pub where George would always go. We will still have to go to Abbey Road and Paul's house of course!
We'll take train from London Paddington to Liverpool Lime St. on the 25th when Beatleweek begins. It ends on the 30th and we fly home from Manchester on the 31st.
P.S. A "day trip" to Liverpool from London is impossible. First, train will take about 2 hours. There's too much to see and do. When I took my 19 year old twins in 2006, we got BritRail passes and traveled all over England and to Edinburgh. We were in Chester which is real close to Liverpool, so we got there super early like 8am, dropped our bags at the hotel and headed out - saw The Beatles Story, took the Magical Mystery Tour bus all around and walked around Albert Dock. Of course went to Mathew St. and down into the Cavern Club and Cavern Pub. That just scratched the surface! We were there in July, so not Beatles week, but the entire time in the U.K. the temps were in the 90s and the tube (underground) was about 130 degrees in the cars that didn't have A/C! And none of our B&Bs or hotels did either. I thought I was going to die from the heat and I was "only" 51 then! One time I got up in the middle of the night and literally took a cold shower! Henceforth, all hotels I stay at must have A/C !

Yes, but they end in early August (before we were supposed to arrive on the 21st, but now we're not going now anyway!)

Finally finished watching the entire series...had to talk my son into letting me use their Hulu account.
Overall I enjoyed it...even though I have heard some of the stories already. It was intriguing when they were working with the sound board, separating the vocals and the instruments and Paul's explanation of the sounds. There were some interesting pictures I had not seen before. The shadowy effect bothered me a bit...was that supposed to be "artsy"?? Why did Paul chew gum throughout?
Paul's face was priceless when they played around with "This Boy"...he had such a look of fondness, especially when he heard John's voice. He looked so pleased, very proud.
I loved the closeups of Paul. Somehow seeing those closeup shots had the same effect as when I saw him close up on the TV 57 years ago.

I reread this article about Rick Rubin and McCartney 3,2,1.
After reading this article and watching the DocuSeries I have to say that Rick Rubin was the perfect "coanchor" for this Series. I also am far more optimistic that if they do a "Sequel" and concentrate on Paul's Post Beatles' Career, Rick Rubin would also be a perfect cohost. I imagine that Rick instead of totally concentrating on the big Paul 70 hits that all of us already know, he would also include great album cuts that everybody "should" know. They already included "Waterfall" on the original 6 episodes that I loved, so I could see Paul and Rick talking about a great, great song like "Footprints" from Press to Play. That is what I would love to see. Talk about an unheralded GEM!

I just started watching 321 on Hulu today . I am absolutely in love with this . I love hearing the back stories to some of the songs the Beatles created . Thank you ! Paul you are amazing and thank you for your beautiful creative insight . I was very pleased to know your father was a piano player . Amazing !

@oobu24 This just annoys the heck out of me. The Beatles broke up 52 years ago, enough is enough. Just move on with documentary series about your career since 1980. Tell me about your songwriting/recording experiences in greater detail with the Fireman, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Michael Jackson and others. Talk about your solo albums and tell us what the songs were about and your inspiration in writing them. Would love to hear your favorite moments from all the tours you have done and comments about the individual band members you have had while touring. Would love to hear more of your thoughts about writing classical music and songs for West End/Broadway theater. I could go on but think you will get my point -lol
