New album by Ringo, titled Postcards from Paradise
-
You know, I've been listening to the songs that have so far been released, and as many samples I can find on Amazon and eBay, and so far, I'm liking what I'm hearing. And I've been hearing a lot of criticisms about Postcards from Paradise, and honestly, I don't understand what is so bad about this song. You really need to understand it from Ringo's point of view. It's really a tribute song to the Beatles (Ringo's "Paradise" you might say), with all the song titles representing memories, or Postcards you might say. Really, it's not that bad of a song. I really do enjoy it. The line "I won't Back Off Boogaloo until you say you Love Me Do" actually gave me a bit of a laugh when I first heard it. That is such a Ringo line. I really enjoy this song. In terms of singles, I wouldn't pick it over Back Off Boogaloo, Photograph, Oh My My, Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go, and Wings, but I like this better than Heart on My Sleeve Wrack My Brain (I really hate that song) Blind Man Down and Out Only You (And You Alone) Snookeroo A Dose Of Rock N Roll Hey Baby (I REAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLY hate that song) Las Brisas In My Car La De Da Walk With You And almost any other single out there, apart from You're Sixteen, No No Song, and Weight of the World, as I would probably put Postcards at the same level as them. I have high hopes for this album, and I'm especially looking forward to Rory and The Hurricanes, and Island In The Sun, the song he's written with his current All Starr Band.

No accounting for taste. Most of the songs you list I like WAY better than anything I've heard from Postcards from Paradise -- including the title song, which I find pretty cringe-inducing. As for it being a Beatles tribute -- well, yeah, and this is what, the 49th one Ringo's done?

I dunno what to say buddy. I enjoy Postcards more than quite a number of Ringo's previous songs. To be fair, the album hasn't come out yet, so we can't fully judge yet. From what I remember, there was blatant hatred going towards Ringo 2012 when that came out, and yet now, 3 years later, I'm seeing less hatred, especially towards Wings, which was being called a terrible remake back in 2012. People seem to have warmed up to that album. Never know, the same thing might happen here.

For what it's worth, Beatlefan Magazine's review of the album concluded the title cut is the weakest song on the album. I, too, always have high hopes for Ringo's albums, but....he's never been thought of as a singer and that isn't going to change. This album will sink immediately. It's just gonna' happen. Right after the Beatles broke up, there was still a great amount of good will from fans and the general public for the group and its individual members, and Ringo benefited greatly from that. His songs got played and charted quite high. He had more hits than John did the first few years after the breakup. His songs don't get played now and they don't and won't chart anymore. It's just a fact whether we like it or not.

That's it really. For me, all that really matters is how much I enjoy his music. I just want something that will stick in my brain, something memorable that I can play drums to or sing along to. I really love songs like Back Off Boogaloo or Wings. I really hate songs like Hey Baby or Pure Gold. It just so happens that I enjoy what Postcards has offered so far. From what I've heard, I'd probably pick this CD over Liverpool 8, maybe Ringo 2012, maybe Ringo the 4th, definitely over Rotogravure (his absolute worst), and Bad Boy (his second worst). And you never know, maybe this'll be an album that'll make it to the air waves. Either way, I'll be checking this album out in a couple of weeks.

Ooh me too!! For sure. I ordered it from Amazon as soon as it became available. I, personally, enjoy his albums. And I have more of his songs on my iPod than I do of John's!

Oh I know the feeling buddy. I am a near completionist when it comes to Ringo. On my phone AND laptop, I have pretty much everything from Ringo to the 3 songs currently released from Postcards, studio AND live albums. Even the albums and songs that I hate... cause, hey, you never know, I might grow to like Hey Baby or A Dose of Rock and Roll
-
I thinbk Ringos last couple of albums have been pretty samey and am not expecting anything different from 'PFP'. I think his most recent creative high was on things like 'Vertical Man' and 'Ringo Rama' which were as good (if not better) than anything he produced in the Seventies. Don't get me wrong, I've pre-ordered 'PFP' but will probably give it a couple of listens and then it'll sit next to 'Y-Not' and 'Choose Love', gathering dust on the shelf.

"Hey Baby" is a song he and the band and whoever else was at the recording session at the time seemed to be having fun with...in the studio. It should have stayed there! Total waste to actually place it on an album. "Dose of Rock & Roll" has a nice Peter Frampton guitar solo....but that's not worth listening to it more than a couple of times. Especially dislike the way the song begins. I try and force myself to like "Wrack My Brain" 'cause it's a song George wrote for Ringo...but still doesn't make it for me!

Same here! Hey Baby, for me, started out as a girly pop song that turned into the worst song I had ever heard. And then I heard Ringo had done a version of it... did it change my opinion? Not at all. I still despise the song. A Dose Of Rock N Roll started out good, for about 5 seconds. Then it just goes slow and dire. The chorus is somewhat interesting, but I'm sorry. If the beginning of the song is gonna be that boring, you've effectively lost my interest in listening. There may be good albums either side of it, but Rotogravure is the worst album Ringo has ever put out. Even worse than Ringo the 4th and Old Wave, which to me, aren't really that bad. They're not the best, but they're hardly the atrocities I hear people making them out to be. Deep down, I've really only heard 2 bad albums from Ringo: Rotogravure and Bad Boy. I enjoy every other album apart from those 2, Rotogravure mostly. Bad Boy has a few good songs, Rotogravure? Only 2 good songs. But it's songs like Hey Baby, A Dose Of R&R, and Spooky Weirdness that kills Rotogravure

He's never going to sell what he sold in the '70's riding the post-Beatles' wave. But he's a recording artist and a performer, so he's recorded a few new songs to sing in his shows. Right on Ringo!

That is the great thing about Ringo. He's earned his money, he's basically got a secured retirement for himself and Barbara, whenever that happens, God forbid. He's not in it for money anymore. He makes music to satisfy his love of music. That's one reason why is... for lack of a better phrase, The Greatest

Funny thing is I love track my brain and really enjoy his cover of hey baby (has that ragged drunk sing along quality you can only hear in some stuff from the 70's.....).

I like both as well. I also love the title song from Bad Boy. And I think Rotogravure is decent overall, though I haven't listened to it in a while.
-
You guys actually like Hey Baby? Eh, maybe it's just me and my taste. I just really despise that song from my childhood... Plus I just really dislike Rotogravure. Only 2 songs were good in my opinion. Apart from that, I consider the album a big bust

I think the main reason new Ringo albums sell poorly is because they are nonexistent to the general public. It's got nothing to do with poor music, many have not heard a Ringo song since... "Photograph"? I'm picking them up on the radar because I'm constantly on the Ex-Beatle frequency.

It's true. There's probably some people out there who think, "Oh, Ringo's albums have done badly from 1976 to 1992, therefore, they'll all do badly." Or they dislike Ringo's drumming style and think he's the worst drummer out there, and decide to pass on his music. Well, I have heard the entirety of Postcards From Paradise, due to a convenient internet leak, and I gotta say, Ringo's drumming on this album is superb, especially on my favourite song on the album, "Rory and the Hurricanes." You wanna hear a kickass Ringo drum solo? That's the song for you. It just makes me wonder... what do people have against Ringo's style? He's good at keeping a solid beat. His music is good. He can still draw crowds. He may not be the greatest singer out there, but his drumming has been very good over the past 55 years, spectacular sometimes. He must have been good, to have influenced many people. Many drummers around the world have nothing but positive things to say about him. What do they see that many others don't? I really do think this album is gonna do well. I just have that feeling inside me, that it's gonna do better than Ringo 2012, Liverpool 8, maybe even one of my favourites, Y Not. Maybe it'll get Ringo back into the charts, if they can get a few songs off the album onto the airwaves. Postcards, Rory and the Hurricanes, Island in the Sun, maybe Bamboula. Tracks like them. The highlights of the album.
-
Well, for me is not his studio albums drummer records, they're not like fifteen minutes of drum solos or technical show-off, it's more like a variation of things, like Ringo can also sing, he can write songs, produce and arrange, the drumming is only part of the picture. It's well made pop/rock. Take it or leave it.
-
In a way perhaps his records is a combination of what he did in The Beatles. Only that it is all-Ringo for 45 minutes.

That's so true actually! With many drummers' albums, including one of my favourite drummers, Gregg Bissonette, there's millions of drum solos. Not a single solo on Ringo's album, due to him hating solos. Maybe that's why people consider Ringo to be a terrible drummer. They don't see anything (what they consider) spectacular or worthwhile on his albums. They ignore the lyrics, and the other musicians. If it's a Ringo album, it's all about the drums. He just plays a basic beat with a couple of drum fills thrown in. Why can't they just see that he plays music very well without solos? In fact, for me, it was Gregg himself that made it clear... "Drum solos are not the most important part of being a drummer." I don't get the problem with Ringo's style. In fact, I love it. He may not be the most fluent or wild drummer out there, and he definitely isn't the greatest singer out there. He's no Gregg, no Simon Kirke, no Phil Collins, no Jeff Procaro, no Ginger Baker... but he is still my favourite Drummer. and he's still my main inspiration, and the one drummer I'd love to meet most. Ringo forever!
