I thought "I Am Sam" had that distinction, unless they're talking about the original recordings. And of course "Across the Universe" had an all-Beatles' soundtrack too. They had to have secured the rights.

I protest calling Eppy the 5th Beatles. I suggest they change the title to "The Screwed Beatles." Why? Because he screwed the Beatles......outta 20% here and there and each. One 20%!! That's all! Not 20% outta John, Paul, George and Ringo! He was making 80% total! I know, I know, in the print version of "The Beatles Anthology" by The Beatles, Paul stated that Brian was a lovely man, but a bad business man! Yes, BAD! Col. Tom Paker made 50% off of Elvis. Allen Klien wanted to make 25% off of the Beatles, if Paul signed the contract with John, George and Ringo. But Paul suggested 20%, "We're a big group. 20%"
-
Paul said if anyone was the "Fifth Beatle", it was Brian Epstein. He believed in them totally, managed them in good faith and worked tirelessly for them. They all got screwed because he was naïve. But he put them on the world stage and made them world famous. Made them "bigger than Elvis", which no one thought was possible. No matter what bad deals he did. But he also got them their record contract with George Martin, and made the deal that got them on the Ed Sullivan Show. He still made them multi-millionaires and they all lived in total luxury. Yes, they got even richer years after he died. But without him, we would probably never have heard of The Beatles. I would love to see this movie.

The quote was 20% and Paul said "We're a big act. He'll take 15!!" Of course Paul was proved correct in his evaluation of Allen Klein. He was a crook. See below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Klein Mr. Klein was convicted of tax fraud in 1979 and served two months in prison for failing to report income from sales of promotional records, according to the Associated Press. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/arts/music/05klein.html?_r=0

IMHO George Martin was the "5th Beatle" for everything he contributed to their music.

He did all that and he was the ultimate outsider who became the ultimate insider...per the people behind the movie, who are great at what they do. This movie is going to be done very very well. Brian had an interesting and complicated story of his own....apart from the Beatles. I want to see all that on the screen. It should be very revealing and fascinating....and tragic. They need the right actor. Not sure who that will be.

No. According to CBS News that McCartney gave an interview to, three members wanted to approve a 25% management agreement with Klien. Paul suggested 20.

Nah, I recall Paul saying quite firmly that he wanted to give Allen Klein 15%. The CBS thing you're referring to is 48 Hours (before it became the weekly which-spouse-killed-the-other? mystery show).

That's right, and PAUL said it. Now if Apple, the lawyers, and Klien's estate has it different like 15% then fine. But Paul stated 20 against 25. Eppy made 20%.

So It's Epstein V's Martin... I would vote for Epstein. He put them on the stage and negotiated (if I remember - less money but more shows on Ed Sullivan) to start the ball rolling. They all relied on Brian even though they knew he was out of his depth. He was a kind of secure net and they trusted him. As Brian's importance declined, George's increased, but by this time they were learning his trade and bouncing off each other. The Beatles started to push boundaries and challenge George, they wanted a certain something and he was dragged along with it. When Brian died the bubble popped. Out of all the 5th Beatle nominations, lots are promoted due to musical ability - Martin, Best, Sutcliffe, Preston and even Jimmy Nichol. Then there is the people like Aspinall or Mal Evans, blimey what about the Mahrissmi, Yoko or Bob Wooller or Tony Barrow. Apart from their first manager (I can't put my finger on his name?) their is only Brian who has directed them in such a way. To be honest, while typing this up my whole perception on the matter has double-triple-quad-etc changed. I'd still vote Brian but can't remember what I'm voting him for?? was it a film or something?

It's in the Anthology DVD. Paul said he wanted to offer Klein 15%. :

That's true Randy, but it depends on what your definition of "5th Beatle" is. Some of us lean toward the music aspect, which is why we choose George Martin.

Let me help you out to clarify things: " He initially offered Beatles manager Brian Epstein top dollar for a single show but the Beatles manager had a better idea?he wanted exposure for his clients: the Beatles would instead appear three times on the show, at bottom dollar, but receive top billing and two spots (opening and closing) on each show." (Wikipedia) Who is this "Preston" you mention? The manager's name is Allan Williams, but he wasn't their first. Two of their friends acted as managers #1 and #2 (all the details are in Mark Lewisohn's book Tune In.) It's a fantastic read!

Billy. I didn't realise George actually gave him My Sweet Lord first, but when it bombed he decided to put it out himself. Why did the need evolve to nominate and prescribe someone as the fifth member of the greatest group of all time? I don't believe in "fifth Beatle" (I just believe in me...) But if I had to nominate one who fit the bill, it would have to be George Martin ahead of the others.
