Beatles US albums to be released in January

Don't understand this. A few years ago they released two volumes of Capitol albums , but left out Yesterday and Today and Hey Jude . Now they've done it AGAIN ,but with the incorrect masters and the two albums mentioned above ,and The Beatles Story ?! Completists nightmare !

Also, this includes A Hard Day's Night, which the Capitol Albums did not include (I believe since it was a United Artists release). Minor clarification, but point still taken; this is very messy. I'm one of these who owns everything - all the 1987 original CDs, 2009 stereo and mono remasters, plus the Capitol albums collections. I will probably have to buy this due to my insane completest tendencies, but it appears that the Capitol album collections won't even be completely superceded because there will be some of the wrong US mixes being used.

I have the Stereo box set, but I never bought the Mono. From what I've read, it sounds like maybe this would be worth it for the mono versions alone. But realistically, will I be able to tell the difference between the stereo and mono versions of songs? Does one sound better than the other? Forgive my ignorance and thanks....

Luckily for this completist, I did not buy the CDs back then! So, will probably eventually get these new ones.

However, this set does not contain all of the original US mixes (the Capitol albums did). Since the duophonic stereo has long fallen out of favor, it sounds like at least some of those tracks are being replaced by the 2009 remasters, so it isn't completely authentic, whereas the Capitol albums collections were.

I don't have a good enough ear for that sort of thing, so it won't matter one iota to me.

In some cases, though, it may be glaringly obvious, especially if you grew up with the US versions of, say, "I Feel Fine" and "She's A Woman" and they use the British mixes without all the echo. (Not sure which songs will be getting the British mixes, though.)

Complicated question, because there were British stereo, British mono, US stereo, and US mono mixes at the time. The mono boxed set was the British mono, and it appears that this new US Albums box will use the US mono (as they should) but for the stereo tracks it will be a combination of British and US mixes. Leaving all that aside, there are many noticeable differences between the mono and stereo mixes, such as different backwards guitar solos in "I'm Only Sleeping," different use of harmony and double-tracking of vocals ("If I Fell" and "I Should Have Known Better"), lots of things like this. Plus many of the early stereo mixes were pretty crude, just jamming the vocals to one side and the instruments to the other. Even up to "Revolver" some of the stereo is crudely mixed, which is why I prefer the mono of that: it really rocks! Hope that's not more, or less, than you wanted to know!

What's "glaring" to you may be lost on me!

Fair enough, but I consider you pretty savvy among the fans, just to let you know!

Glad to have the Hey Jude cd coming out. Weird, but I always liked the photos on that one.

Thanks! I may be Beatles savvy, but I just don't have a good ear for sonic differences. I mean I can tell if someone is singing out of tune (I'm not tone deaf!) but it's hard for me to tell other things.

The whole thing is confusing... prior to Pepper.... Different names for albums between the US and UK (which by extension was Australia)... Even when the generically-named Rubber Soul and Revolver came out, there were songs left off, whacked on here, tacked on there, slotted on another album. deleted so it could be released as a single.... I've gone the way of the U.K, as that was our natural release.... but a sign of the times in those days.... just another anomaly that lends itself to the Beatles legend.... but damn confusing.

Some thoughts on this upcoming release: I have the Capitol volumes of US albums that came out in 04 & 06; have loved the sound on these and wonder if this can be really improved at all?not to say that it can't, but I love the sound on these albums as is now. Favorites that I listen to often: 1) Second Album-it has a rock n' roll feel-a great work out album to listen to at the gym. 2) Rubber Soul?more acoustic, beautiful to listen to out of some old wood speakers. 3) Beatles VI-love the cover, the mixes of tempos from rockers like "Bad Boy" to the hauntingly overlooked "Yes It Is". As far as this new box set, I may pass, as I am more than happy with what I have. Yet, I will spring for the "Yesterday & Today" individual release because I think there are some mixes in there that differ from the UK versions, specifically those pulled from Revolver. I hope these are not tampered with and replaced with the 09 Remasters instead, because I could just go ahead and make a playlist, or listen to Ebbett's transfer from vinyl. I do not see any need to get the US version of "Revolver"?does anyone know if there is anything different in the track mixes for the US release? "Hey Jude" or "the Beatles Again" had the potential of achieving Magical Mystery Tour LP status had they pulled all the songs from singles releases at the time, including "The Inner Light" or other tracks that subsequently made Past Masters 2....in lieu of earlier tracks that opened the LP. Does anyone know if the tracks differ here from the UK versions at all? Love the cover and may get this for the cover alone. The US soundtrack of 'A Hard Day's Night" will be a lot of fun with the interspersed Martin tracks-I really liked Ringo's Theme "This Boy" instrumental on there. "The Beatles Story" is something I would not pick up-I listened to it once and that was too much. As a second generation fan (the 80's was my time-my youth) I have no nostalgic value for this and would have preferred the American version of "Rarities" with the longer version of "And I Love Her", the alternate versions of "Penny Lane" and the strange but interesting mix of "I Am the Walrus." I think that The Hollywood Bowl release would have fitted beautifully for this American themed box set. I am slightly disappointed that a volume 3 that would complete Capitol albums was not made.

The funny thing is, until many years later, most Americans had no clue that the Beatles albums were different in the U.K.

I always heard they re-did the songs on HEY JUDE...The early singles ..their voices sound a little older ...who knows?

No, they're the same recordings. That album was just Allen Klein and Apple trying to tie up some loose ends and make some money to make up for the delay of the "Let It Be" album. In the confusion of '64 they had never put "Can't Buy Me Love" or "I Should Have Known Better" on a Capitol album (they were on the United Artists movie soundtrack album, though). Several songs on this album were appearing in stereo for the first time, and none of them had appeared on a Capitol or Apple album in the U.S.

The US "Revolver" and "Hey Jude" albums are a mixed bag as far as which ones used the same mixes as the British ones, but this may all be further complicated by this new boxed set using some of the '09 UK mixes instead of the US ones. We still don't know definitively how this will all pan out, but here's a website that breaks down most of the variations in mixes that have been released so far. Pretty dizzying! http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/beatles/
