Paul's new album and promotion
-
Bob Gannon:
Now that Sgt Pepper has been released, the focus for MPL should be switching to the new album. But taking a look ahead, there does not seem to be a whole lot of time to promote the album. We know it's eventually coming soon, I mean it will be sent to those who purchased tickets for the later shows on the tour. But when you look ahead, when will there be time? June.....although they are off, if would be quite difficult to do at this point without any advance notice. We are already almost in June July.......bulk of the month touring August....no touring and the band is not on call and off for the month September......back to touring most of the month in NYC area mostly October...we have at least 6 confirmed shows and 2 or 3 rumored ones This leaves November/December.....however at least some of that looks to be touring as well. Don't ask me where, I can't tell you but awefully good chance of some more shows. So this begs the question...How and when will this album be promoted? What does everyone think?
Sadly this new album was not ready for him to do a few songs at the NY area shows which would have given him some good publicity for the new album.

http://petrolandenses.com.br/musica/2017/09/mande-meu-amor-para-plateia-de-salvador-diz-paul-mccartney/ This interview is in Portuguese, too many questions to manually translate now. The main purpose is to promote the upcoming concert in Salvador (October 20, first time in that city), but he was asked about the 1990 concerts in Rio, the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper, his memories of growing up in post-war Liverpool, the song "FourFiveSeconds", the 2014 concert at Candlestick Park, his current relationship with Ringo, how he feels about doing such a long concert at 75 years old, his knowledge of Brazilian music, the possibility of visiting Salvador as a tourist, and the most interesting question, about his upcoming album: "Voc? j? est? preparando mais um ?lbum solo? O que seus f?s podem esperar dele? Estou indo fazer um show no Barclays Center (no Brooklyn, em Nova York), hoje ? tarde, mas, ainda assim, entre um show e outro, eu vou fazendo o novo disco. E ? interessante porque h? uma faixa especial para o Brasil, mas ? tudo que posso te dizer agora. E acho que voc?s v?o gostar disso". "Are you preparing another solo album already? What can your fans expect from it? I'm going to do a concert at Barclays Center (in Brooklyn, New York) this afternoon, but still, between shows, I'm preparing the new album. And it's interesting because there's a special track for Brazil, but that's all I can tell you now. And I think you are all going to like it". Well, if he's willing to confirm it, perhaps he will actually do that song live next month in Brazil?
-
Just a quick recap: as we all know, several weeks ago Denny Seiwell mentioned in a radio interview that Paul showed him two songs, one with Ringo and one about Brazil. Paul mentioned during a couple of interviews earlier this week that the new album is halfway through, a good number of songs have been recorded and he doesn't know yet which ones will be released, but confirmed it will include a special song for Brazil. According to Denny that song sounds nothing like actual Brazilian music, so obviously the tribute to the country is in the lyrics. Perhaps his memories of recent tours? Sometime ago Paul mentioned that he had started writing a song while in S?o Paulo for the November 2014 concerts, so maybe that's the one? He's doing four concerts in the country next month, so hopefully he will include that song in the setlist, even thought the album will be released next year. After all, he did "Coming Up" live in 1979 (released in 1980), "Driving Rain" live in June 2001 (released a few months later) and "Follow Me" live in 2004 (released in 2005). If he decides to do that song live over here it will certainly attract a lot of publicity for the upcoming album, and the expectation will surely help with sales figures once it's released. He can even use one of the hypothetical live performances as a promo video to maximise the album's exposure in the local media.

It beggars belief that some people actually spend time on the forum of an artist they clearly don't like or respect ð??? Why not find another forum representing an artist that you think doesn't " croak"when he sings ... Surely a more profitable use of your time ? Or is it just that trolling is a hobby ?

I would seriously doubt that any song from the new album will be brought out during the South America shows. I doubt even a flourish at soundcheck, The album being only half finished does not fare well for anything new added. But the interview does confirm what I said over a month ago that the album was pushed back into 2018 and did not sound as if finished yet

Very disappointing news to me. I wish he would stop the never ending touring and finish the new album.

Definitely sad news, was really looking forward to a new album this year

Yep. I hate to be cynical but I wonder if the rush not to complete it is purely financial. Touring makes a lot more money than new albums. Oh well, hope it comes out in early 2018.

That still isn't a real long time to wait. Early 2018
-
"First new album in 5 years!" will make it sound enticing, I suppose.

Maybe he'll write a song for Australia, too ! Be inspired to. They'd be so thrilled, especially having waited so very long for him to perform concerts there again.

Disappointments aside, I remember him saying he did not know if he had anything left to record after "New" came out. So just the thought of another studio album in the works by Sir James Paul Mc "freakin" Cartney is amazing to me! Can't wait to hear it!

There are lots of anniversaries in Paul's career of course but if the new album came out next March then it would coincide with the 40th anniversary of 'London Town'.

I think Paul is basically done from a creativity perspective. He enjoys touring & pleasing his fans with Beatles & some Wings' classics thrown-in. But, he doesn't have the "fire in the belly" to write classic songs any more. That's fine. I'd rather he not record if that means putting out mediocre/poor material. I thought he would move in the direction of writing material for others to sing, but that doesnt appear to be his style.

Mediocre/poor material? Chaos, MAF, EA, New. In Paul's entire career he never has released 4 albums in a row as incredibly strong as this group.

He said he's written a lot of new songs since "New" album
-
If I remember correctly, what Paul was actually saying after New was released was that he was refraining from writing any entirely new songs as he had too many other songs, or ideas for new songs stockpiled. I think he did also say that he had bits and pieces of songs recorded on his phone or on his computer and that he wanted to finish them all off and possibly make an album out of them. So that might well be what this new album is - a sort of tidying up job consisting of all the odds and ends he had knocking around. Whatever it is, I'm very much looking forward to it whether it comes this year or next. I have to say I disagree that Paul is 'done' in creative terms. It could be argued that, certainly since 1997 or so, he has been on somewhat of a late career peak. All of his albums since that time have been very favourably looked upon by fans and critics alike, and for good reason. New sounded as fresh to me as any album he has recorded. He's still interested in exploring and experimenting with different sounds and different kinds of songs. To still have that enthusiasm after all these years is really quite incredible, and as long as that enthusiasm is there, he'll keep coming up with the goods.
-
He's still writing songs Billy Joel, for example, apparently stopped writing new material years ago. Tom Petty was still coming out with new albums, so I don't understand why he's stuck in the "Yesterday" section (about him dying). I thought it would be in Band on the Run board.

An interview recorded on September 26 to promote the October 13 concert in Porto Alegre was published today: https://gauchazh.clicrbs.com.br/cultura-e-lazer/musica/noticia/2017/10/exclusivo-o-show-sera-como-uma-festa-quero-que-todos-se-divirtam-diz-paul-mccartney-cj8es2x8a000e01mq8uw0t8m8.html The complete interview lasted almost 18 minutes and the audio of some of his answers can be heard in the link above. Unfortunately the most interesting topics (for me, at least) are not included, so I'm providing a brief translation below: Amongst other subjects, he said the song about Brazil will not be done live at the upcoming concerts in the country. About the upcoming album, he said he's got about 75% of the material for it and the album will probably be released sometime next year. This is just a summary. His answers are a little longer than what I wrote above, but it wouldn't make sense to translate back to English the printed Portuguese translation. Hopefully the complete recording will be made available soon, so that you can all hear his exact words.
