McCartney promising a "refreshed" version of 2016'
-
Flaming Pie and Tug of War were 2 of his best Solo Albums and he ignored them the most. Most of the best songs from both albums have never been done by Paul. Besides World Tonight and Somedays, he never performed Young Boy, Beautiful Night, Little Willow and Souvenir. Don't know the "technical" aspects of singing, but it seems that Little Willow might be the easiest of all. Could Paul's Band jointly sing World Tonight with Paul similar to the way they do "Hard Day's Night". If Paul and Band can pull off Hard Day's Night (a much more recognized song by the fans) they might be able to do a good job on a song like World Tonight. What's going on here. I have always been a bit more crazy about Paul doing more "Solo Songs". Now it seems like more are joining in. At this point I would be thrilled if he did My Brave Face and Put it There in Miami (along with bringing back Penny Lane).

I've just grown tired of ranting about it! And to answer the previous question, I think the only examples of him playing solo songs from the 80's or 90's after the album's initial release and subsequent tour as setlist staples (no one-off deals), is "Flaming Pie" and "Calico Skies" in 2004, then "Temporary Secretary" in 2015. The only one that might also be considered is "Hope of Deliverance" in 2013 since it was played at multiple shows before all us wonderful US fans scared him out of doing it what with our robotic chips that force half the venue to either empty or refill the tank anytime he plays something released after 1976...

McCartney should have the self confidence and attitude to not let that bother him. Really, does he need a standing ovation after every song - lol.

Maybe people who go to see him multiple times are finally getting tired of hearing the predictable set list and actually want to hear something that is more recent than 1980.

No more "Flaming pie" please! I prefer another track for this beautiful album, maybe "Somedays" or "The word tonight"!
I'd love to hear The World Tonight. Do you think he could still sing it?
For the verses he will go into his still pretty intact lower register. Listen to the first seconds of take 27 of 'Your Mother Should Know', the 25 year old McCartney sounding like, take, 'Kisses Of The Bottom' for both falsetto and the low spoken voice! Remarkable. Imagine the 'Venus And Mars' 2010 intro vocal. Then, he will be able to force out the higher notes, and the higher screams will be covered by Abe Jr. I imagine it would be possible. And the band would rock. The thing is though, when did he ever dig out a previously unplayed 80's or 90's song... 'Temporary Secretary' was the first addition in that category in 10 years or something?
He has no confidence in himself. He probably thinks that no one knows it. I wish that he would really pull something good out of his multi talented hat. Maybe the club that started playing Temporary Secretary could also start playing a few others! Then Paul would do them.
"That blew my mind that of all the wonderful songs he could play, he chose "Temporary Secretary" which IMO is horrible. Maybe I need to go to that club and suggest some other songs - lol.

__________________________________________________________ Couldn't agree more. Why he continues to play "Temporary Secretary" just baffles me when he has great and potential classic Solo songs that you would think he would want to be far better known by the masses. An example off the top of my head is "Put It There". You would think he would be so proud of that song and every parent can relate to it. Every year (including this year) around Father's Day I will hear appropriate songs played on local news channels, cable news channels etc. but never have I heard "Put It There". Just think if he had played "Put It There" on every "other" tour since 2002, how much more recognized it would be. Besides the audience at the shows themselves, think of the You Tube hits it would have received. Perhaps media news stations around Father's Day would play it if it was better known. It is a 2 minute song, not too difficult to sing and would be a real nice moment during the show. Best yet, like Here Today, people would know that he has done so much more after the Beatles and Wings. I think Paul likes to be considered "hip" to a fault. And that is where Temporary Secretary appears to fit in. I actually liked McCartney 2 as a complete album. It was different, diverse and still had many terrific Macca melodies. Temporary Secretary was different but just ok as an album track to my ears. When I bought the remastered CD I had a better appreciation for MC 2 but I like 6 or 7 songs better than TS. Examples that I like a lot better are: Coming Up, On the Way, Waterfalls, Nobody Knows, Summer's Day Song and One of These Days. Temporary Secretary is not even close to being one of my favorites on the album itself. Why Paul would continue to play TS and ignore Put it There, My Brave Face, Little Willow, World Tonight etc. just as you say "blows my mind" (and not in a good way). I would put 4-5 Seconds in the same category as TS. 5, 10, 15 years from now, no one (people in general) are going to be singing either TS or 4-5 Seconds and to include them at the expense of his great "meaningful" songs that he has never (or rarely) played is so shortsighted for Paul's own legacy.

Oh I know he should. But I don't think he has ever really had it and never really will.

"Put It There" is a wonderful song and his concert audience could totally relate to it. As for being "hip", he needs to understand he is 75 and has not been considered "hip" in a very long time and doing a songs with Kanye is not going to change that IMO - lol. I just never liked "McCartney II" and it is one of the rare solo albums I d not own.

________________________________________________________ I forgot to mention that I'm going to a 75th Birthday Paul McCartney Tribute Concert tonight in Tampa. Looking forward to it of course. It is being sponsored by a local Public radio station and they have like 17 Bands/Solo performers so it should be very good. The best thing is that the cost was only $12. which I found to be a terrific value. My only disappointment is that when I went on the Radio Station's website to request a few songs I found out that they are only playing Paul songs from 1963 to 1976. IT IS LIKE THEY ARE SAYING THAT PAUL MCCARTNEY RETIRED AFTER WINGS. Paul has been active in writing music for over 50 years and yet the last 35 years are being ignored. It is not the only reason but I believe that Paul's tours over the many years and his general disregard of his Solo music feeds into this kind of thinking. Even in a tribute setting celebrating his 75th Birthday is ignoring great songs from Tug of War, Flowers in theDirt, Flaming Pie, Chaos & Creation, Memory Almost Full etc. etc. Anyway, I'm hoping that at least a good number of songs I will hear tonight will be deeper Beatles' and Wings songs and not just the hits. But to not hear songs tonight like My Brave Face, Put It There, That Day is Done, Little Willow, That Was Me, Ever Present Past, Jenny Wren, Promise to You Girl, Wanderlust etc. etc. is a disappointment.

Summers Day Song? Waterfalls? On the Way? One of These Days? Those are all such slow songs I don't see how they could replace Temporary Secretary. I don't mind TS. And his voice can still handle it. I doubt he could do any of those slow songs anymore. But we are still stuck in a way back machine. Maybe he could do more from the last 20 years? haha

_________________________________________ Oobu, I appreciate what you are saying. I wasn't suggesting in any way (except maybe bringing back Coming Up) that Pau should play any of the McCartney 2 songs I mentioned above. Nor was I specifically looking for Mc 2 songs to replace Temporary Secretary. I was pointing out that in my opinion TS wasn't even one of the 5 or 6 best songs on the album. Furthermore, I was pointing out (again my opinion only) that Paul has far better (and more meaningful) Solo songs to choose over TS. I feel the same way about 4-5 Seconds. Ok you played them in 2016 but give us something different in 2017. Neither song is not close to being "essential" songs to be playing.

Earlier I mentioned that I was going to a 75th Birthday Tribute Celebration for Paul in Tampa last night. I wrote a more complete review of the Show in the Broadcast Section of Maccaboard for anyone interested. One of the songs played last night has been mentioned a couple of times in the Setlist discussion topics so I thought I would mentioned it here. One of the real surprises was a band doing "Rocky Raccoon". I had never heard "Rocky" live so it was very cool. The singer was quite good and really had the crowd singing along. I was surprised how much the audience loved it and participated. Now WixRocks might be right that Rocky Raccoon (like When I'm 64)might be more suited at a much smaller, informal festival type setting as compared to a very large arena. Still I loved the song and so did the crowd. After hearing it however I don't believe that Paul has the voice to make it work in 2017. Most of the song Paul would have to sing it "alone" (far different than a full Band participation type song like "Hard Day's Night") and that might prove very difficult. I'm not a voice expert so I really don't know but it is just one of these gut feels I have. Still, it was a great moment last night. Hearing a crowd singing along to non-rock songs like Rocky Raccoon, When I'm 64 and Your Mother Should Know (all 3 were played) really shows the broad power of the Beatles's music. They were not just a rock band.
