SECOND SINGLE FROM "NEW" - "QUEENIE EYE"
-
Heard Queenie Eye for the first time this morning on the radio. It was on Andre Gardner's Breakfast with the Beatles. It sounded so much better than what I had heard on the Internet. Production seems very Beatleesque (a la Seargeant Pepper era) and I see it as a real grower with repeated listens. I believe it will be a very good album cut off of NEW. I know the purpose of "singles" but I'm not sure Queenie Eye will be successful on the charts to today's audience. More than anything, I think Paul's marketing team is using it to get people to buy the album. Looking forward to seeing the video.

Bruce M.:
I've been semi-obsessively watching the airplay charts and checking the playlists of individual stations that post them online. I see no sign that Queenie Eye has had much of an impact other than to kill New's upward progress on the Triple A and AC charts. It's early, but this tune did not get the quick pickup that New did.
What surprises me is that they didn't make "Queenie Eye" available for download on iTunes as soon as it went to radio (it's still grayed out, obviously till tomorrow now). On Katy Perry's upcoming album, three songs have appeared for download ahead of its release as they got publicized; that makes more sense.

After multiple album listens, this is still the very best song. I'm ranking it in the top 5 of all time McCartney solo efforts...

I think it's a more sensible choice for a single to get wide exposure. The quiet section in the middle may be somewhat puzzling for listeners, but it is shorter on the radio edit. Still, it's less of an obstacle than the harpsichord on "New" (of course, they could have opted to do a radio mix of "New" without the harpsichord, but too late now). I guess they're waiting for the first-week brouhaha to subside before releasing the video and getting into high gear with "Queenie Eye," which will keep the momentum going for the album.

Anybody thinking that "Queenie Eye " is about Heather and his divorce? Anybody reading the lyrics and matching that up?
-
never thought of that before. So, I went to read the lyrics again. Very insightful observation, Steve; maybe it could be.

After repeated listens, this song is best described as a piece of pure kinetic energy, the term from physics for the energy generated from an object in motion. That song burns like a meteor hitting the atmosphere, fantastic piece of energized music. Best thing on the album, IMHO.

Prudence asked why's it an "insult" for a Paul song to be called "Beatlesque" when that's a big compliment for anyone else--why are Beatles songs sometimes called "Old-fashioned," I've wondered that lately, too. Why aren't they just considered very good, often brilliant songs that are wonderful in a timeless way?
What I really hate is when after they've played a Beatles' song, "they say something like 'that was an old Beatles song'. Can't it just be a Beatles song or a song by The Beatles???? They're timeless and besides we all know when it was recorded and that the group no longer exists. Suppose some station played, say, Beethoven and then said...Oh that was an old Beethoven song!!! It's kind of the same thing...when you think about it.
What's funny is that I use the term 'old Beatles song' or 'new Beatles song' depending on which end of their run it was release - for example, I Want to Hold Your Hand is an old Beatles song to me while Let it Be is a new Beatles song...like if they were still currently recording - kinda weird, but that's just me (and I'm not old enough to have remembered anything except for perhaps the Let it Be/Abbey Road era...as a 6 year old)....LOL

I gotta say, after listening to it now 8 or 9 times, I can't imagine Queenie Eye getting much radio play. I think it was a demented choice for a single. I don't mind it, but I can't really think of a radio format it really fits.

Bruce, I wish they had sold you "The Deluxe Bruce Version " of NEW. the one that come with 14 songs of new material minus Queenie Eye. I just can't disagree with you more on this song. You dislike it, I love it. This is the song I would love to see and hear live the most. I believe it's the BEST track on NEW. I think it lends perfectly to several radio formats. My teenager and my younger one both love it. It's the one song they took notice of and wanted to know more about.

Quoted from the review from the Wall St. Journal.... As for "Queenie Eye," it's unfair to burden any new work by Mr. McCartney with his legacy, but had this song appeared on "Magical Mystery Tour" or "The Beatles," it would have been among those albums' best tracks. I double approve this message.....

Nope! It's the words of a childhood game....................It's like the childhood street game British Bulldog.

Perhaps, Queenie Eye the game is a metaphor for his adventures with Ms. Mills?

Thinking it's not a good single is not the same thing as disliking it. The fact that it's totally laying an egg on radio is proof it was a bad choice, even if Paul's fans all love it. However, I must admit it's starting to grate on me, though my opinion is still kind of unsettled. But best song on the album? No. Not even close.

My local Triple A (WXPN) has, as I've said, been doing a special countdown this week, but during the couple of overnight hours that they play their regular playlist, they've played "New" twice this week, but no "Queenie Eye." That was after playing QE heavily last week. By the way, "That Was Me" is still the only song of his they've played in this entire countdown of 885 songs (chosen by fans and staff) from the 21st century, and now they're closing in on the Top 100. Lots of Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, John Mayer, Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Lumineers, Avett Brothers, and Bob Dylan, though. Kind of shows how much love Paul gets at this format, where the general feel is more earnest and rootsy (or moody and experimental) than what he's putting out there. It all makes me think that his best choice at this format would have been "Turned Out" (bonus track, I know!), or even "Appreciate." Or "Early Days." There's still time for something to happen, but it's kind of a muddle right now.

I don't think Steve is referring to the "Queenie Eye, Queenie Eye" chorus. Listen to the rest of the song.

In the end, "That Was Me" was Paul's only appearance on that whole countdown, at #422.

The album version of "That Was Me" or the live version that was nominated for a Grammy?

The album version. These were all voted on by listeners, as well as the station's staff. From my perusal of the countdown, it doesn't appear that any live tracks were included. Well, except for #1, when the DJs soberly announced a controversy: it was recorded in 1975 but released in 2006. Cue a live version of Springsteen's "Thunder Road" (notorious for topping every listener poll on the station), but this was the 21st century??? Turned out that was a joke, and the real winner was Adele's "Rolling In The Deep."

By the way, I'm hearing the video for Queenie Eye comes out next Thursday.
