Anyone noticed a pattern here lately? I have. ANYTHING Paul does that is new or different is up for a slam fest here. Paul plays with Kanye and gets slammed. Paul plays with Rihanna and Kanye and gets slammed. Paul plays on the Grammy's and SNL and gets slammed. Paul plays with Taylor Swift and gets slammed. I think it's sad and disgusting that the people who are supposedly fans of his and members of his own website can be so petty and negative about anything he does lately. It looks like he's having some fun to me, and the people he's playing with look like they're having fun too. Lighten up, people! He may not be doing or playing what YOU want. But he is doing and playing what HE wants. All the bitching in the world here is not going to change that. Sure, you have the right to talk about it, but it does not have to be so negative about everything!

Sure, you have the right to talk about it, but it does not have to be so negative about everything!" I will say this one more time. There are a few like myself and Audi for example that want his setlist to be more reflective of Mr. McCartney's entire career. I just think it is mind blowing that somebody thinks it "bitchin" to want him to play more of the great solo music he has created I truly understand he plays what he wants and could care less what someone like myself thinks about his setlist. Finally, the people "bitchin" about his setlist are not always negative, it is quite the reverse. They love his music after the 1970's and are buying his new albums/cds etc.

I think many older supporters of Paul seem dismayed generally or even confused at many of his recent decisions: artistically but also what seems to be perceived as dubious judgement on his behalf.
The only dubious judgment Paul has made recently is his decision to sing Maybe I'm Amazed on live TV, knowing full well that it was a very difficult song to sing when he was in his prime, let alone now. Other than that, he hasn't made any dubious decisions of late. He's made a lot of smart and interesting choices that show his eagerness to create. Collaborating with Kanye was an artistic decision that has produced two good songs and two global hits so far. What's been embarrassing to see is the reaction of some of Paul's older fans to this collaboration. The drama queen over-reactions, the borderline racist (and sometimes overt racist) comments, the complete denial of the legitimacy of other genres of music. You want dubious judgments? THOSE are the dubious judgments. Not Paul doing what artists should do and taking risks.
Thank you. parlance

The only pattern I've noticed is the increase in the number of posts b*tching about other posts. Paul isn't a saint and isn't above criticism, even on his own board. Not everything he does is gold. The board has moderators who determine when enough is enough. That they are prepared to allow discussions that are critical of Paul should be an indicator to said b*itchers that open and contrary discussions are okay. Just because YOU interpret a post as negative doesn't mean it is.

Two way street. The drama queen over-reactions of people who love everything he does, the gushing God-like worshipping, the refusal to accept he can do no wrong, the over the top pronouncements of his achievements (particularly when they are tenuous like the Kanye/Rhianna thing) are all as embarrassing and judgementally dubious as the ones you've listed. Simply because you feel his collaborations have been smart moves and wonderful artistic choices doesn't mean they are. It's your opinion only. Others have a contrary opinion, which is their opinion only. As one of the "older" fans your mentioned, I can't stand the supposed two "good" songs with West. I didn't like Paul's Standing Stone either for the same reason. I don't like the genres Paul dabbled in those collaborations. Sure Paul can do whatever he likes but many of his fans won't always like his results and won't always "get" it. And they're free to express their thoughts and feelings on why they don't. Being fans they do it passionately.

American racism came boldly back out of the closet sometime around election day '08.
Yes it did. Obama is not my favorite president, but he is definitely not my least favorite. I'm a democrat but think Obama has been good. Not fantastic, but good. I'm more of a Bill CLinton fan, his oratory skills are second to only Monica L , but maybe I'm biased bc he lives in the town next door and I see him weekly lol. I think Obama has done a good job, but then again the Repugs have blocked his every move, so he could be an actually fantastic prez. ANNNNNYYYWay, I agree Racism runs rampant in the south, and it needs to be fully addressed, not forgotten and swept under the rug like in the past. Some aspects may not be "politically correct" but it's necessary to address them head-on, it's the only way things get noticed and accomplished (ie full on set out to abolish the clear racism, and you will make strides). I think Paul's collab w/Mr. West is a good idea on Paul's behalf, he's a fellow artist. Off topic I know but necessary to address. I have a feeling this generation that I'm in (current teenagers and 20 y.o's) will be a much more accepting generation. Speech over
"ANNNNNYYYWay, I agree Racism runs rampant in the south, and it needs to be fully addressed, not forgotten and swept under the rug like in the past." Speaking from somebody who has lived in Charlotte NC for 25 years, racism does not run rampant here. Matter of fact, Charlotte ranks as one of the top cities in the country for African-Americans. Charlotte has also elected two African-American mayors since I have been here.

Exactly. Mr. McCartney is a human being and not every thing he does professionally is fantastic. I liked "New" when it came out and I have enjoyed seeing Mr. McCartney live (1976-2010) several times and all have been excellent shows. My only complaint over the years is that Mr. McCartney's live shows are not reflective of his total career IMO. I have praised many of his albums (CHAOS, MAF, TOW, BOTR, FITD) but have bashed others. (McCartney II, Wild Life,POP ) That being said, I was not impressed with any of the recent songs he did with Kanye. They were OK but people jumping up and down with glee because they were doing decently in the charts made me shake my head. These songs doing well in the charts are due to the popularity of Kanye and Rhianna not Mr. McCartney. Finally, I don't understand how wishing Mr. McCartney mixed his setlist up more is negative or not liking him recording with another artist is that horrible - lol.

Paul McCartney is probably the greatest entertainer alive today. Typing up his resume would take all day. Since he's been doing his thing longer than a lot of us have been alive, he's going to have fans from practically every generation of the last century - and now this century. His oldest fans were born before LPs existed. His youngest fans were born in the age of digital downloads. He has fans all over the world. We come in all shapes, sizes, races, religions, mental acuities, social handicaps and rational deviance. I've been told that even people who read books are welcome here. You can't have such a diverse fan base without having fans that are going to disagree with each other over pretty much everything. Maybe everyone at the Andrew Ridgeley message board is going to agree on Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, but nothing Paul ever does is going to be heralded by all of his fans. Some are too stuck in the past to think anything will ever compare with The Beatles or Band on the Run or wherever their preference lies. Some will only see his work through rainbow glasses, with everything he sneezes becoming an artistic masterpiece. Most are probably somewhere in the middle. And you know what? Not to sound like Stuart Smalley, but that's ok. Paul has never demanded that all of his fans share the same opinions on every subject. I don't think he'd be Paul if he did. When it comes to censoring people on the internet, this site is pretty lenient. Paul McCartney and his bands have changed the world in more ways than any artist alive today that I can think of. His music tears into our hearts and helps us see the world with more optimism and love than any beer commercial during the Super Bowl could ever imagine. The world may or may not be falling apart, and all the pain and suffering in your life might be more than you think you can handle, but no matter what's going on around us, every single one of us can play whatever period Paul music we prefer and feel better about life. As Voltaire once said, "I may not agree with your choice of Paul setlists, but I'll defend to the death your right to hear it." I might be paraphrasing. Paul's good enough, he's smart enough, and doggone it, people like him.

Yeah, I know, you guys held the DNC in 2012!!! But last time I checked, Charlotte, NC is not the entire South. In Alabama, Florida, and Missouri, Racism is still very common. I like Charlotte, actually. In fact, we rent a house in NC, the OBX (Duck-Corolla) every summer. But just bc Charlotte may be more liberal does not excuse the south from some horrible race crimes that sadly still happen today. Anyways,

I'll go back to something I posted several years ago...Imagine this website is Paul's house. And you are an invited guest here for whatever reason. And you run into him while you are walking around in his house. Would you say the same things to his face as what you have posted about him here? Would you dare to tell him what he should do with his life and his time? I love the guy, have for decades. He changed the world. I grew up when The Beatles were still together. I would not presume to tell him what he should or shouldn't do. Anyone who does this is simply disrespectful, period. Whether they do it here or to his face. I'm honored he still playing and I have a chance to see him occasionally.
-
Can't a fan make suggestions to him, tell about dreams they have that he fulfill in his work--that he work on more songs for another pop/rock album and put another out soon, that he add more "new" songs to his setlist, etc.

Now that's just silly. If all of us simply parroted the same opinions about Paul, it would get boring here pretty quick. That's why forums exist, so fans can discuss and offer their own opinions good and bad. It's not disrespectful to offer an suggestion or an opinion about what Paul does. Nobody is going to like the same things, and it isn't helpful to stifle conversation by calling a differing opinion "disrespectful". I love the man, and I think all of us here do. We state our opinions on what Paul does because of our admiration of his career. Again, that's why this forum is here: to facilitate dialogue, not keep every opinion the same.

Conversely I don't invite people to my house and tell them what they should or should not eat. And if I was asked by Paul (as if), for my thoughts on particular projects I would tell him my honest thoughts. Something I'm sure he isn't at all used to.

And regardless of which side of the fence folks sit, most would prefer an album of new material in the form that we've all been accustomed to over the decades.... that's where I'd like the energies to focus now. New material on a pop/rock/experimental good old fashioned Paul McCartney album.

Those are my favorites, too, of course, but I think these other projects re-energize him. Not only does he want to do them, I think he needs to do them, they keep his juices flowing. I think that energy is exciting, and it's got to be more exciting for him than yet another pop/rock album that gets lost in the shuffle of today's music, that even a lot of his fans will judge harshly. Every song on "New" has been slammed here by someone or other along the way, and so has the album. That can't be very inspiring to him if he knows about it. Who can blame him for aiming at a different audience for a change? So I certainly wouldn't expect a full-on pop/rock album (or even the Fireman) till at least 2016, if not later. And I'm not expecting a setlist that leans more heavily on his solo material ever; it's just not gonna happen, no matter how much "advice" people here give him. He likes to see a sea of happy faces in the audience, to "drink it all in," and he knows how to make it happen. Again, who can blame him for that? So sure, everyone, bring on your negative opinions if it makes you feel better, but from Paul's perspective, it probably just sounds like a bunch of nagging and whining. Peace!
