Im tired of people making fun of Paul for trying to compete with the young guns. Pauls music is still very much well received. Id like to see how well Miley Cyrus' new album performs when she is 71.
Good point!

On iTunes in the US, the album got up to #6 earlier today, but has slipped back down to #7. In Billboard next week, it's likely to debut at #3 or possibly #2, but it would take a miracle to hit #1 since Pearl Jam is outselling it 2 to 1.
Wasn't New like at # 90 on iTunes in the US just a couple of days ago. I guess since the album is now out, it really jumped up. Maybe in another day it will be in the Top 5. I agree that Pearl Jam will likely by #1. Like Springsteen, they have an enormous amount of very loyal fans. The other thing is that the reviews for the new Pearl Jam have been stellar. Must be a really good album. I will be thrilled with a #3 or 2 showing. I think the great reviews are giving Paul the best "buzz" for a new album for a long, long time...Maybe going back as far as Tug of War. I think Paul may have a shot a #1 the following week in the US especially if he would make some big appearances next week like: *one of the big morning shows ...Good Morning America, Today *Ellen *CBS Sunday Morning *Leno

Are you joking? Katy Perry's new album comes out next week. It will outsell Paul ten to one... If Paul's people truly wanted a #1 album, they likely could have achieved that by picking a week with lighter sales competition. But they didn't...

Solo Macca has had 11 #1 albums (either US or UK). Last #1 was Flowers. Its been way too long & inexcusable. Was hoping 'New' would be #12, but it looks like it wall fall short to Pearl Jam at #2. Paul's Marketing people should have known better to not release the album the same week as Pearl Jam!

Pearl Jam also gets pretty significant radio play. Sadly, Paul doesn't.

Then when should he have released it? Mikey Cyrus' album was released last week. Katy Perry is next week. Lady Gaga is next month. We're entering the biggest sales season of the year. Should they have pushed back the release to January, simply to get a number 1?

If Bob Dylan says Paul is the only one (making music) he is in awe of, that's good enough for me. Fifty years on and Paul's still making great music. Where does he come up with those musical ideas and great melodies anyway??

True, is it known what the competition is when they decide and who makes the decision? Does Paul and management have the choice? Also a different week with Flaming Pie could have seen it hit #1. Look it doesn't matter if Paul is never #1 in his lifetime again but it would be reward for hard work, effort and consistency since the late 80's, and if its good for Dylan who other than touring incoherent versions of his tunes, as masterful a songwriter and musician he remains still manages to get an album to #1 then it should not be for Paul.
-
I would love to see Paul at Number 1 (and this album deserves #1 status and Paul has worked hard to promote it too), but if it doesn't, I would be OK with a top 3 spot; MAF debuted at #3, that was amazing!! To have Paul, getting great reviews and sitting in the top 3 is amazing considering he is 71 years old and he is up against the younger generation; he can still sell a record and make a great record.

Different artists announce release dates of their new albums at different times. Katy Perry announced the release of her upcoming (Oct. 22) album in late July. Lady Gaga announced her (Nov 11) album in the first half of July. Pearl Jam announced their (Oct 15) album in early July. Even the upcoming Beatles BBC set (Nov 11) was announced nine weeks in advance, which is a considerably shorter window than the above. Paul's album was announced only SEVEN weeks prior to release. It seems to me that if they were to keep it under wraps for that long, they could have looked at the competition on the horizon and picked a "lighter" week to issue New. But they didn't. Regardless, I thought the thing would sell at least 100,000 (US) copies. If they can't move that many, they would've had a tougher time hitting #1 even on a slower week. Oh well, missed opportunity, IMO...

And apparently, the iTunes strategy was to have just ONE edition so the sales wouldn't be split on that chart. But when that one edition costs $13.99, that can put some potential buyers off.

I see both versions on (US) iTunes (?).

At the Walmart I work at we have sold 7 copies of NEW week to date. Not sure about deluxe because we are sold out I think we only got 2 or 3 in. Pearl Jam has sold 0 week to date and we've sold 1 Miley Cyrus Bangerz.

well here in the UK i think an improvement from #4 to #3 is hopeful as its cher infront in the midweek chart but since Wednesday Paul has been well above cher on amazon and itunes, where from Monday he was well behind her on itunes.

At this point in time i dont know if it'll get to number one,nor do i care to be honest what i would love to see was some traction in the charts and for it to hang about in the top 10-20 for the next few months, given the speed records crash into the charts and sometimes disappear with equal speed so it would be nice to see it hanging around for a good few months yet. Hand on heart im not so sure it will mainly because of the weird Xmas season that usually sees all sorts of greatest hits albums come along, but we'll see.
