New in the Charts Thread

Heard tell chart sales are too close to call between #2 and #3 in the US album charts. This genuinely might be an occasion when popping out on Saturday to buy your copy of NEW - if you haven't done so yet - could secure Paul the #2 slot when the album charts are published. Martin
Very true. Already got mine and encouraged family and friends to get theirs over the weekend. (Will be double checking, though)

Make sure everybody gets the message to buy your copies today, Saturday, for the purchase to count in this weeks chart figures. Martin

Done! Between in-person, over-the-phone, or email correspondence, I got close to twenty people to get it over the week. Then I've more than matched that with perfect strangers over social media by coordinating a secret campaign to get friends of mine to recommend the album with personalized status updates on Facebook that used the hashtag #whatsnewpaul and closing with a link to the album iTunes page (for all the lazy people out there who wouldn't bother actually looking it up). A friend of mine and myself also came up with our own hashtag: #campaign4art which is actually now being picked up by complete strangers - all pushing NEW! That's all in addition to my own standard and deluxe edition purchases. I certainly hope this all equates (at least in a small way) to his edging out Miley for #2....

I am impressed, great job. Maybe the McCartney team should hire you to do promotions - lol

UK chart update shows New sitting at number 3 behind John Newman and Pearl Jam.

The official Australian album chart (ARIA) for the first week's sales (remembering that the album came out over a week ago here) was released this morning. Unfortunately, New only made it to number 22. However, I didn't expect it to do well in Australia as I've seen no promotion here and the shop where I bought my copy told me that they only ordered in ten copies! http://www.ariacharts.com.au/chart/albums

id be happy if Paul went from #4 midweek to #3 on Sunday, does anyone have first week sales figures for chaos ,memory and kisses ? around the 25,000 mark if i remember right?? so we can see how new compares.

I'm not sure about UK figures but in the US New is set to do about 75,000 which is comparable to Kisses but half of MAF. Obviously the music industry isn't as strong but MAF did 160,000 in the first week in the US and Pearl Jam are going to do 170,000 to 180,000 this week, so is still possible. I expected New to sell more than Kisses.

Sometimes It seems that myself and few other Aussies alone have promoted New more than any record company has in Australia, I am yet to find anyone who has heard a track on radio and certainly there have been no specials nor have their been many reviews on the album. Debuting at #22 is a great effort considering there is no live appearances from Paul, not even a video message or video interview to push it on one of the major morning or evening shows at the very least. It was virtually down to iTunes and our devoted fan base. With just a little more of a push and this record could have been an easy top 10 in a country where the uninitiated masses would be led to believe that Bruce Springsteen is the only legend over 60 out there.

Why can boring, has-been, artists like Neil Diamond or Rod Stewart get a #1 record with their junk, but Paul can't score one when he's just as popular as ever?!

The question of the hour! Personally, I think NEW could have been #1 and was on its way to doing it but a crucial piece of the marketing puzzle was missing from the equation in the last stretch: the 45+ crowd. They could have been easily reached with a couple back-to-back appearances on the right shows and by having Starbucks ramp up their own (non existent) game. I'll elaborate more on that on the marketing thread after the charts come out. Still holding out hope for #2, but keeping the tissues ready just in case... ops:

Never seen a number 1 album of McCartney in my life as I was too young at the time of Tug of War. That would be a satisfation but there aren't any chances. Maybe if McCartney had chosen to remain in EMI or an important distribution. Radios don't play too much music from little discgraphic labels and by reading in this place I understand that Macca distribution is "indipendent". However this album is doing very good. I see in France, according to amazon fr. and apple store fr. sells more than pearl jam! Why only in France? In this time (while i'm writing) in Italy, both in Amazon and in apple store it., New is third wich is however a very good place. What is bad to have any chance to reach number one is even the price of deluxe album. It's the more expensive album in the top ten of itunes and this is not a good thing for young people and occasionally buyers. This price let me understand that Paul himself didn't want to reach number 1.

Yes, most definitely the question of the moment. Especially when Paul remains so creative & inspired. I don't know the answer I'm afraid.

IMO - I think the majority of the 45+ crowd is just into going to McCartney concerts and not buying his latest music. Unfortunately, I believe that no amount of marketing to them would have changed the situation.

.....and IMO.....you are absolutely right. Its been maintained for years now that the vast majority of people attending a Paul concert are not people who are remotely interested in his latest works. Out of sheer nostalgia they just want to hear the old songs. As a Paul McCartney fan attending a concert next year I would be more than happy if the whole show was made up of songs recorded since Driving Rain. But I would be in the minority. Although the current marketing campaign must help, I don't think it will make that much difference to sales. Its mainly the youngsters who drive music sales (as it always has been) and most of them are not going to be interested in buying music recorded bya guy old enough to be their grandad! No more than I would have been when I was 14 and getting into Wings. .

I guess I should be thankful that I was around to witness one McCartney album ("Tug Of War" in 1982) hit #1. I first started paying attention to the charts in the spring of '78, when "London Town" was out, and I was incredulous that it couldn't push past "Saturday Night Fever" here in the U.S., but that album was a juggernaut, so what can you do? 1982, I believe, was also the year Pete Townshend wrote that open letter to Mick Jagger telling him he really should quit this live performance thing now that he's 40, lest he embarrass himself. Could anyone have predicted that all three would still be performing to huge crowds in 2013? And who is the only one of the three, at this point (and fairly consistently over the past decade and a half, I might add), even coming CLOSE to a #1 album of new material?

Exactly. I was able to appreciate my Mom's favorite (Frank Sinatra) but I was definitely at that age not going to buy one of his albums - lol. I would be one of those in the minority with you and would love a show with just stuff since DR. Then again, I would personally love to hear some songs from FITD again

That was so great in 1982 when McCartney was #1 with TOW. As much as people on this board hate "Ebony and Ivory", it was a major factor in TOW being #1.

I'm not concerned that Paul won't be #1 in US this coming Thursday. We know he can't catch Pearl Jam. But I will be thrilled if he comes in # 2 or even 3. Pearl Jam has a very strong legion of rabid fans (a la Springsteen) that are going to run out and buy the album in the first week. Obviously, Paul has many fans but not as many of the fanatical variety (like we are on this site) as Pearl Jam. What I will be very interested to see is how well "NEW" does in the 2nd and 3rd week and through 2013. In the last couple of decades, Paul's albums do well in the 1st couple of weeks and then drift rather quickly out of the Top 200. "NEW" has a chance I think to be different and stay on the charts much longer. I say that because of all the 'buzz" it is going and all the great reviews. I do think that Paul needs to get back in the States and do some high level shows quickly in order to keep the momentum. It will also be helpful if he can get some radio airplay. If "Queenie Eye" doesn't work as a single (I think the video is coming out this week) I am hoping that "Save Us" becomes the next single. I don't have SIRIUS, but I wonder if Paul's team is trying to arrange a "month long" All Paul station focusing a lot on "NEW". I think that would also help tremendously. "NEW" is so good quality wise, but people need to hear the songs before they would go out of their way to purchase.
