FourFiveSeconds- new collab. with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul
-
I've seen a few articles mention that he's playing the keyboard, but nothing that says he's NOT playing guitar. I'll assume it's him till I hear otherwise for sure. Forbes magazine says that there are a total of nine songs that Paul and Kanye collaborated on, but I think Rolling Stone debunked the rumor that Paul co-produced his whole new album. Someone said that this song doesn't sound commercial, but I think it totally does. It's catchy, it's about having a good time, and a somewhat similar acoustic guitar riff was in Avicii's big hit "Wake Me Up" recently. Plus it's been an unusually long time since Rihanna's last new music, and at least on iTunes the overall response in the customer reviews is ecstatic. It's at #3 there right now.

I just looked on iTunes and don't see either of the new Kanye collaborations on there at all.

It is quite ok for McCartney to work with other people. Write songs. Play on tracks. That's his job. That's what he does. But I am a bit surprised at how many are treating this like it is some major McCartney project. We aren't even getting facts about exactly what his contributions are. I am very underwhelmed by it all. Next project, please.

Bruce M.:
I like it. I'm totally baffled that Paul fans are objecting to this. Get a grip, people. He's producing good music with some of the hottest current artists.
I am baffled that people are getting excited about these records chart positions. McCartney does not have a prominent vocal part and plays piano/guitar. If these records sell well and get radio airplay it is not due to McCartney. IMO - it gives the appearance of a old man hanging on the coattails of younger artist in a attempt to be relevant. As for both songs, they are ok but nothing more IMO.

At this moment, the new song is #3 on iTunes. If you're not seeing it, you may be looking at a website that's only refreshed once a day. I still say that they are riding HIS coattails. Why else would Rihanna feature Paul's face prominently on the home page of her website? The song is much more his style than theirs.

How can you even say that? I am not a fan of these folks, but clearly they are VERY successful in the music genre they operate in, all without being remotely connected to a Beatle. Do they need to record with Paul to get press? I think not.

Seems a good thing and a treat, and great fun for Macca it's cool

I guess if you look at it like...Paul's pushing the musical frontiers again, and that's what he's always done. Then I can understand it.
-
My problem with these collaborations is I don't believe any frontier has been pushed. The two songs we have all heard are just so-so songs. Middle of the road. Not offensive, but nothing 'out there'. I may have been premature in calling the last one a B-side and nothing more.... but it's not that much better. It's certainly "pleasant". But that's about it. You get three "heavyweights" together - in any genre, industry or whatever - then you expect them to fight against The Incredible Hulk, not a tag-team of Pee Wee Herman, D.J Qualls and The Sherminator from American Pie. These collaborations are just so underwhelming. They push no buttons. Expand no frontiers. They're just middle of the road. I think I almost preferr a song where Paul sang the lead three-quarters of the song, with his trademark hooks, and then Mr. Kardashian throwing in a 30-second rap bit. That's actually what I was expecting (and dreading) from this collaboration. But, at the least, that would be "something different". Not saying I'd like it. But hey, it would challenge me to like it more (or at least appreciate it) than the current candy generic offerings.

Yes, I know that Rihanna has had more hits than almost anyone ever, and Kanye has had some huge albums, but the way they're promoting these songs clearly shows they have immense respect for Paul and that they think it's exciting that they're opening themselves up to a whole new audience (of old people!).

In the very least it's a two way road. They working with Paul may give them inroads with older people. But Paul will certainly benefit being exposed to a demographic that otherwise has no use for his music.

I don't think it's about gaining a new audience, except maybe in Kanye's case more international recognition. Rihanna's clearly a global superstar, so she's got nothing to gain. I think it's more about respect for McCartney than anything, who he is and what he's accomplished. He's arguably the most widely recognized musician on the planet. I don't think they are "riding his coattails", but I do think it's more to their benefit than his. I just think his fans are rolling their eyes and going wtf.

From another site... "the guitar was played by David Longstruth as he's taken credit for it on his Twitter "

"I still say that they are riding HIS coattails. Why else would Rihanna feature Paul's face prominently on the home page of her website? The song is much more his style than theirs." McCartney has not had a hit single in about 30 yrs so I think I am right regarding sales. As for his picture, it is done out of respect of a living legend and I am sure it is pretty cool to have done a record with someone like McCartney. Also, if it is the same picture of McCartney that is I-Tunes it is a awful picture.

If he shared the vocals with them maybe it might have helped but I still don't think young people would care.

It's good to see Paul pushing new frontiers... It seems the original comments and fears of Paul working with Kanye haven't come to pass. Looking forward to new ideas!

In any case, FourFiveSeconds is clearly about to be a major hit. As of this morning it's #3 on iTunes and already at #35 on the Mediabase Top 40 chart, having vaulted onto the chart basically instantly. http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255599

First people complain about Paul's voice (not me) Then they complain that he's not singing : Poor Paul, everyone always complaining!? I don't know how he deals with it all, really... I really liked the song straight off! That means I'll like it even more later... Good on Paul for always trying new things!! I'm impressed that Kanye and Rihanna are singing with Paul and that I like both songs! All great....hope it does really well, fingers crossed Just watched an interview with another well know musician, saying music is in his blood and he'll be making music always... I think Paul is the same... Just fantastic! I'll always be interested in listening...

I wonder if folks here would truly like these songs if they didn't know Paul was involved?
