Scared : could have been another classic
-
it just needed George Martin arrangement and production. and a bit longer .. if Paul re-record and put it out as a new single !
-
Scared to me sounds like a song that could have easily been on Chaos... Almost like a mashup of "Anyway " and "This never happened before" Which by me is just fine because I loved both of those songs. "Scared" is a wonderful song, raw with emotion, and perfectly UNproduced. a great ending to a great album.

Or he could always re-record "My Valentine" with electric instruments. Kind of interesting that there's no straight-up positive love song on this album, like "Your Loving Flame" or "This Never Happened Before." Was Paul consciously trying to avoid charges of being too sentimental this time? I do love "Scared," though, as it is. I think more production would dull the effect it has, but it could be more commercial if he wanted it to be, for sure.

Scared works well just as it is. It truly is one of his best songs Beatles or Solo and it looks like it is going to fly under the radar. Most people in their lives can relate to his lyric at one point or another and he captures it so well.

Could have been? I think it is!
-
I like it the way it is, striped bare and hidden, just like a person or animal might hide when scared, at the end of the album. So many songs on New are heavy with instrumentation and intriguing sounds best discovered in headphones that it makes for a nice contrast. Not criticizing those other songs because I think this is a fantastic album. superb!

I also like Scared just the way it is. It's my favourite track on the album.

"New" is about as straight-up a love song as one could possibly imagine.

New is that in the lyrical sense but the upbeat melody isn't what many would call a Macca love song in keeping with the examples cited, Loving Flame and This Never Happened Before . I guess those are the recent descendants of Maybe I'm Amazed, My Love, etc.

Yes, I was thinking more along the lines of a "ballad," as they say. A slow-dance number, if you will.

One thing I really love about the track is, towards the end, there's a muted double beat of the bass drum at the start of each phrase... almost like a heartbeat. It really adds to the tension and emotion of the song. It's an incredible piece.

Not sure even George Martin could do something about the dearth of melody, the laboured bridge (if that's what it is) and the uninspiring constipated timbre in proceedings. Maybe he could lift it from 15 to 14 on the scale of Great to Not So Great on the album, but that's about it. I love the album but this should be on the B-side of a B-side.
-
I love Scared. I wouldn't say it's my favorite on New, but in the top 5. I am really digging this whole album. The only songs I'm ever tempted to skip when I have it playing on the iPod are Hosanna and Everybody Out There, and I don't dislike them. I just get into all the others more.
-
I like Scared, but it's not close to my favorite song on the album. And it's the one tune where I really do miss Paul's younger voice -- not 1970, I'd happily settle for his 2005 voice on this one.

I might be the only one here thinking it should be more produced the good thing is it seem everybody loves the song, an indication that its a very good one. and that can also mean good or clever production can make it sound classical, it's a ballad . just think of the Love version of "While my Guitar Gently Weeps"
how a simple tune with just guitar and one vocal can be produced to turn into a classical song with simple orchestra touches by a genius like Martin. not to forget also it was already a great song with full band and harmony. -

Hosanna might be slightly creeping into my consciousness but Scared, at this point. continues to be limp and uninspiring.

well that is not the point at all ! the comparison is about production ! you wouldn't love "while my Guitar" that much if you have heard it from George on acoustic guitar!not like the two official versions, that's what clever production do. yet I think you are a bit harsh about "Scared" , in my opinion its a beautiful little piece, it could have been a classic if it has given the right attention from Paul and producers.

The Anthology version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps is about as bare in production as it gets, and it towers over Scared. In some ways, it is actually better than the official version. So, I love that song stripped down to it's jocks sans production. Incomparable with/to Scared. It's like watching a Get Smart marathon over The Kardashians. All the production in the world won't put any polish on Scared. That's just my opinion.
