"Early Days" music video

I quite like it though I'm not sure why the American South??? It seems a bit arbitrary : could be 2 Kids starting out on their Musical journey in Latin America...Sure, the Blues influenced the Beatles but so did many other Musical styles....and the Blues certainly isn't a major part of Paul's body of work. In other words : if this was a Stones or Keith Richards video I'd get it. Their music is much more influenced by black/blues music than The Beatles or Paul ever were. Also I wonder whether this is a calculated bow to all the "cool" videos featuring young hip blacks...any thoughts?
Paul had several blues-based songs: Nothing Too Much Just Out Of Sight Light from your Lighthouse On the Way Oh Woman Oh Why These are just off the top of my head. I'm sure he had several more.
And let's not forget that early rock 'n' roll's roots lay in black blues from the South, and black artists were a huge influence on the Beatles. It's not coincidence that Paul could channel Little Richard so perfectly. Those were the records they grew up on. I think it was a brilliant and lovely choice to focus not on himself, but on the similar journeys taken by the musicians the Beatles were nurtured on. This is the first and only Paul video I've seen that I can honestly say is pure genius. Oh, and it's closing in on 120,000 views now -- not Miley Cyrus territory, but growing steadily.

Thank you both for your thoughts on this. I admit I was very baffled when I read that first post, as all you have to do is listen/watch any interview back in the Beatles and even some post Beatles days from John and Paul to see how much that type of music really did influence them, especially in the "Early Days"

This is Paul's best music video ever. Period. It actually choked me up. Just beautiful. And perhaps not a coincidence that they built a video mainly around black characters in what seems to be the rural south, just as the U.S. is reliving the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and the struggles and pain of Freedom Summer. Planned or not, it's a nice touch.
Is it me or is this a different recording of the vocal, his voice sounds stronger in video than the take from "New"? I disagree about the content of the video, think it should have focused on his early days with background of Liverpool and pictures of his family and the rest of the Beatles as young men.

While the Stones were definitely influenced by the blues, The Beatles were definitely influenced by traditional r&b music.

I think the video is incredibly poignant. It suggests John and Paul's relationship without depicting it directly, in a very creative way that pays tribute to the music that brought them together. Beautiful camera work and directing. BTW, has anyone noticed that the younger of the two boys (the "Paul" character) plays guitar left-handed?
-
I love how you did the black & white music video of Early Days! I also love Johnny Depp! Will you be putting your video's on iTunes? I'd love to buy them, especially the one with Johnny Depp & Appreciate! It would be nice to see all your songs on music video's for sell on iTunes!

Oh yeah, I caught that right away!

Paul already did that with his video for Take It Away

Paul has always played left handed. He is still going strong and looking handsome as ever! I'd like to see him do more video's when he finishes his tour. I wish he would come to OK city so I can see him, provided I don't die before the cancer takes over.

Quite true, much more r&b than blues in their background, and "Early Days" itself is certainly not blues. Still a nice tribute, especially for the civil rights angle. Whatever the motivation, it's an artful piece of filmmaking. Haha, that's f i l m m a k i n g, nothing rude! What's with that profanity filter?

That was the video for "Tug Of War," right?

No, the actual video for the song Take it Away. It's 0n youtube. Paul plays a young John while John Hurt plays Brian Epstein.

Yes, I know that video, but it's more of a general thing about becoming famous and getting a record contract, not specific to the Beatles, I don't think. No "pictures of his family and the rest of the Beatles as young men." ? But I apologize, when I said "Tug Of War," I believe I was thinking of George's "All Those Years Ago" video.

There's a nice little section of the Out There tour program devoted to the Early Days video. If you go to any concerts on this tour, check it out!

By the way, to answer the question asked a while ago, I'm 99.9% sure that this is the same vocal track as on the album version. Personally, I'm surprised and grateful he did such an inspiring video that expands on the song's theme, rather than the cliche of pictures of young John & Paul, Liverpool, etc. That would have been obvious and cheesy. What they created is brilliant and moving (huge credit to the director, who apparently came up with the idea).
-
I listened to the first lines very closely. I think it was subtly cleaned-up. But don't quote me on that.
-
Nup, sounding pretty close to the album version to me too.

Maybe it would have been obvious but read the lyrics and shouldn't video reflect the story he is telling in the song. Also, it seems Mr. McCartney is once again making sure he is telling his side of the story on who did what in Beatles. "May sweet memories of friends from the past Always comes to you, when you look for them And your inspiration long may it last May it come to you time and time again Now everybody seems to have their own opinion Of Who did this and who did that But as for me I don't see how they can remember When they weren't where it was at"

I know. I agree. At first we were all saying he's probably singing about people & books like Mark L's & all the rest. This video just dis-connects it all for me. I cannot relate the Beatles to it at all. And to put guns or rifles in it...considering what has happened... Think that was a very bad idea. If this was a Clapton song...different story.

The only mistake they made in making this video was Johnny Depp's presence. It takes what was a moving video and throws in a pointless cheesy spot-the-celebrity moment. Paul probably included him because people are like sheep and will watch a video just because Depp is in it, and i suppose Paul figured "the more people watching it the better." But it is the only tacky moment in an otherwise excellent video.
