"New" Reviews
-
Having reverted to my teenage days, (yes, I can remember that far back) and playing "New" many times since yesterday afternoon I am of the opinion that this is a 5 star album. There is a good variety of songs and the musicianship is excellent. Stand out tracks for me are: "Queenie Eye", "On My Way To Work" and "Get Me Out Of Here". But I don't believe there are any weak tracks and I suspect my favorite tracks may change. Paul McCartney's song writing is fresh and his songs are full of energy.

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but this is my review of "New". http://andrewdsweeney.wordpress.com/2013/10/19/album-review-paul-mccartney-new-2013/
Jeff Lynne's Beard, I loved the completeness of your review. I too have had multiple listens to almost all of "NEW". I find it takes a little time to absorb Paul's albums and this is not an exception. I too think it is one of Paul's best CD's. Your list of Paul's Best Albums would pretty much be mine as well but as we know, even Paul's lower rated CD's have individual gems on them. For example, I really like many songs on Back to the Egg.
Really interesting you mentioned Back to the Egg...because I just listened to it again today. I like about half of it. Some of it feels phony, like he's trying to be like the punk kids at the time. Some of the songs are just poor, especially by his standards. Arrow Through Me just makes me cringe, words and music both. And After the Ball, what's up with that? There's a few outstanding tracks too, but overall a disappointment. Whereas I feel with NEW, he knocked it out of the park. The whole album is amazing! 5 Stars without any doubt. I would put it in instant classic category and in Paul's top 5 of all time. Definitely his best since Flaming Pie. And that's saying something, but that's just me though, I know many will disagree.

Whack on Goodnight Tonight and Daytime Night Time Suffering on Back to the Egg and it finds even more legs. I love this album. Paul's voice in fine form. Probably the last where his voice is truly rocking. Still think NEW is his best since Tug Of War - even with Scared as the "outro"

ps. I think Arrow Right Through Me is brilliant.

Totally disagree! A song like New is totally pop and very accessible, it sounds like the Beatles and isn't that what the majority of people (not me) want? Songs like Alligator and especially I Can Bet are very accessible pop and rock, tailor made for radio play. It's a very accessible album!
Sure New is the most poppiest song on the album and a few others like Queenie Eye and Everybody Out There have an immediate hook but alot of the album for me did take time to get into. Something about a particular track which at first I didn't get can suddenly just click with me. Hosanna would be a good example of this. I am still struggling with On My Way To Work .

I LOVE "On My Way to Work." At first, I just noticed the lyrics and thought what a cool idea for a song (or poem). Then, I began to get into the music once I understood the lyrics more clearly. It definitely caught my attention right away, but not in a pop song kind of way. It just struck so many chords with me, but I understand songs resonate more with some than others. Depends upon what we like and what we're looking for. We all have individual tastes. Have to admit though, NEW far surpassed my expectations and I've been a McCartney fan since Ed Sullivan (fifth grade for me).

I didn't like On MY Way to Work at first but it is now growing on me. It still has too many hand claps on it though.

Interesting. I love "Arrow Through Me". Always wanted him to do that in concert...(.and "Spin It On"). Love when the brass kicks in; it's just a sophisticated song (IMO) which Paul sings beautifully. Also love the lyrics. Totally agree regarding "NEW". Definitely 5 out of 5 stars which pleases me no end! If people don't buy it, it's their loss. We have the satisfaction of knowing he still can create great music. (A friend I gave a copy to told me he thought it was a really really good album. He plays it in his car all the time. I love when that happens too. Get-the-word-out sort of thing!

I had a look at the Sunday Times, Australia's Sunday Paper and they wrote a lovely little review of New name checking a least 7 songs but giving it the title of "Beautiful" instead of "New" and calling Ethan Johns Ethan Jones , giving the album 4/5
-
I love "Arrow through Me" and also "After the Ball," which I always thought refers to his life after Beatlemania, after the heights of that world-wide frenzy passed. I love most of "Back to the Egg" and wish Paul would realize how great it is. That "New" is reportedly so great is an awesome achievement, proving he's still "got it." When an artist has a gift that overwhelming and strong which then just continues to grow and develop, that's really something.
-
I absolutely love Arrow Thru Me as well, and I also like After The Ball. I love anytime McCartney gets soulful and does some r&b.

Well, a sizeable portion of Australia has been on fire. Maybe the reviewer was suffering from smoke inhalation!!!! :

LOL. Did you like "Here Comes The Sun"? It has tons of hand claps, as do many Beatles' songs; one of their trademarks.

Being married to a drummer (he's up on his electronic set right now) I always need more drums! (not cowbell)

Just saw the latest People Magazine issue (I think the Royals are on the cover). Anyway, Chuck Arnold (People's Music Critic) just listed his 10 Best 2013 Fall Albums. Chuck had Macca at #4. Pearl Jam was # 1 and Justin Timberlake was the 3rd album listed. # 2 was an Artist I didn't recognize (her first name is Janelle). Chuck gave a brief description of NEW and he spotlighted Early Days and the title cut. He basically said that at 71 Paul continues to bring out great music. Making this Best Album List is nice to see especially since Paul doesn't seem to be making anymore US appearances at the present time (And his Japan tour will begin later this Month. Hopefully as we go through November and the end of the year, we will see Paul's name and album in many BEST of 2013 Album Lists. "

You must mean Janelle Monae who is my latest non Paul obsession. She is brilliant imo. She translates best in a live setting , but her band is amazing and she's an amazing performer as well. She's a cross between R and B, rock and roll, blues, and just about everything. She can't be pigeon holed which is probably why she isn't as popular as she should be. Her gimmick is dressing in black and white. She used to wear tuxedos, but she's 'expanding' into other forms of black and white clothing.

jlw44, Yes, that is she. Obviously, Chuck Arnold really likes the album.

I've only known of her for about a month or so, even though she's been around for a few years. Prince and Stevie Wonder are big fans of hers. Hers is the only non Paul album I've bought this year. Her range and knowledge are impressive in these days of cookie cutter pop songs.
