This is the demo. It is so beautiful.... even better than the album version . I always loved "Flowers In The Dirt" and for me it is a master piece like "Band On The Run" all the songs were perfect and classic. "Careless Love" is the only song which I felt it needed something more, I felt it is a great song as much as the rest of the album but that missing part somewhere I didnt understand till I heard this version or demo! one of the differences the way Paul starts the song, in the album version he uses falsetto in the intro. which was a bit weak compared to this early demo. the overproduction killed some of the song magic which we can find absolutely here, very charming indeed with only acoustic guitar and the beautiful normal voice of Paul (why it seemed weak in the album version while he can do such a strong vocal!!!!!) with a lovely harmony from Elvis Costello. I miss such great composition and voice. hope you will enjoy it as I did:

      Love is all you need

A great rendition! Sounds beautiful, this version. Goes to show that simplicity is underrated.

It is!! Thank you. Paul's voice, on the album version, does sound very pinched and weak at the beginning.

Yes, they really should have followed this style on the album. All of the McCartney/Costello demos are great!

Wow, this demo just randomly came on our shuffling iPod, out of thousands of songs! Fun!

Agreed. The FITD version seems to be really polarizing. I don't dislike it as much as some people do, but the released version never quite worked for me. Too bad he didn't just polish up the demo version a little but leave it mostly as is.

The whole Flowers in the Dirt, despite contaning some great tracks, suffers from too much reverb, generally speaking: MOTOR OF LOVE, THAT DAY IS DONE, HOW MANY PEOPLE to name a few... But side A (speaking of old LPs) is really strong!

Yes, especially since they were the only two that weren't later recorded professionally, or not that I know of!

I really liked the Paul/Elvis Costello compositions - but strangely I also find them both overrated and underrated at the same time - overrated because no true classic came of it despite all the accolades...but underrated because at the same time, pretty much every one of their songs were very strong and held up well - yet no one outside the world of Paul and Elvis fans really talks about their work together... But yeah, I agree that the demo of Don't Be Careless is much more effective than the FITD version...but then again, if you go back a couple of years to the Press to Play album, numerous similar examples come out of those sessions...So it's not like Paul missed the boat on that one single tune
