2017 Setlist Speculation Thread

It seems that Paul has got complacent and doesnt feel the need to challenge himself, its shame because it wouldnt need a lot to give his show a whole new dimension. Still undecided wether to try for a MSG ticket but it seems at 75 his shows are set in stone for the way forward.
I think Paul's attitude is - "If it's not broke, dont fix it." He's measuring success by concert sellouts, audience reaction, etc. So, that' why I dont think hes making much of an effort to change the show.
I would say he is resting on his laurels. He does not have to work hard to get good audience reaction by singing Beatle songs. I would measure success if he got people really into songs from his solo career that he never played before in concert. His show would have entirely new dimension if he added the 5 songs I mentioned in another post, played something like "Soily" to end the first encore and opened the show with a non- Beatle song. Something like "Ever Present Past", "Run Devil Run" or "My Brave Face" .

Yes to all of those, but I'm ambivalent about Soily... I'm sure someone would complain bc it is another Wings song. At the end of the day, I want us to avoid complaining for the sake of complaining. For example, what does it really matter what he played at Budokan? Did any of us actually go to the show? How many different songs did he play this time compared with 2 years ago? If I was a Japanese citizen, that would be my first concern. Edit: 12 songs not played 2 years earlier. Once he reaches the US, which has been pretty saturated, the complaints are definitely more valid. Just guessing, but I think we're getting 4 songs not played during the regular 2016 version of One on One. It seems like those four are going to be Jet, Junior's Farm, Every Night, and I Want to be Your Man. Is that good enough if it comes true? Doubtful many will feel that way.

But does anyone seriously believe he's going to come to the U.S. with a dramatically different setlist than he just did in Japan? I can't imagine that happening. Sadly, I think Paul loves the applause he gets when he plays these familiar songs and just can't bear the relative silence when he plays something half the audience doesn't know. And half the audience (at least) wouldn't know Friends to Go, Wanderlust, or most of the other songs BJ suggested -- all of which I would love to hear.

I wish he would open with Jet. Enough people know it for it to work. What if this were his setlist. Five post-1980 solo songs (not counting My Valentine and Here Today), balanced Beatles and Wings. Relatively fresh songs. (I know this is completely unrealistic but these are fun to make). Also, I can't believe that if he played this set, people would still complain. Jet Drive My Car Flaming Pie Can't Buy Me Love Magical Mystery Tour Let Me Roll It I've Got A Feeling My Valentine Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five Fixing A Hole (2005 version) Another Day (for linda) Lovely Rita And I Love Her Love in Song I've Just Seen A Face Put it There Blackbird Here Today New Queenie Eye Your Mother Should Know Lady Madonna Something You Won't See Me Take It Away Band on the Run Back in the USSR Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Hi, Hi, Hi Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) Let It Be Hey Jude Yesterday Letting Go I Saw Her Standing There Live and Let Die Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End

OMG, now you guys have got me all depressed! I don't disagree with you, but I'm rethinking tomorrow's presale. Maybe I won't get the Hot Sound package. Maybe just the GOLD VIP. I don't know. I know his voice sucks, especially on MIA, but I think I just want to see him one more time, and since he is practically playing down the street from me (and the parking is free!) I want to be there. I have the money, so what the hell? You only live once, right?
He is 75 so let's face this will probably be the last time for you and you said money is not an object. Plus, the venue is close so what the heck - lol.
This may very well be the last time I go see him. I did get Hot Sound Package and got a front and center seat in row D.

Now that I've got tickets to a gig...here's what I'll call my "realistic dream"...believe me, I wish it were more... 1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 2. Getting Better 3. Got To Get You Into My Life 4. Jet 5. Drive My Car 6. Coming Up 7. Let Me Roll It 8. My Valentine 9. 1985 10. Here, There, and Everywhere 11. My Love 12. I Will 13. Every Night 14. I'm Looking Through You 15. P.S. I Love You 16. And I Love Her 17. Blackbird 18. Here Today 19. Fixing a Hole 20. Your Mother Should Know 21. Lady Madonna 22. Two of Us 23. Lovely Rita 24. Eleanor Rigby 25. Something 26. Penny Lane 27. Back in The USSR 28. Band on The Run 29. A Day In The Life 30. Give Peace a Chance 31. Let it Be 32. Live and Let Die 33. Hey Jude ENCORE 34. Yesterday 35. Hi, Hi, Hi 36. Get Back 37. Golden Slumbers 38. Carry That Weight 39. The End
________________________________________________________ WixRocks, I live in the Tampa market but I'm undecided about securing a ticket with that 1st show setlist. It didn't do anything for me as I have said in terms of buying a ticket. Now even though you're list above doesn't contain any of the Solo songs I would love to hear, I would attend the Tampa show with your Setlist above. Some of my favorite Paul/Beatle songs are the ones that weren't singles and big hits. Some of the songs above I would pay money to hear again (and I've only heard them once) are: Getting Better Here There & Everywhere I Will I'm Looking Through You PS I love you And I love her Fixing a hole Your Mother Should Know Two of us Lovely Rita Penny Lane (was a big hit but I think I've only heard it one time live) And I do think Sgt. Pepper's would be an ideal opener. For No One would be another Beatle song I would love to hear. It would also be nice to hear Every Night. The one song that he added last year that I did really like is "You Won't See Me" so I would love to hear that one. Maybe scratch My Love which like MIA is a song that I don't think his 2017 vocals could handle. When he comes to the US if his Beatle heavy setlist would be anything close to this, I would fork out the money. As Nancy said, how many tours will he still realistically do. But Paul just give us some of the Beatle songs that WixRocks listed above (really great songs)...not I Want to Be Your Man or even Love Me Do. If I have to do a bathroom break, I would just do it during Let Me Roll It. Just think at one time (like 1989) it was one of my favorite Paul songs. But he has played it to death and he also doesn't sing it well anymore. Good imagination WixRocks. I just hope his Setlist coming to the States is close to this. I have my doubts however.

Your realistic dream is possible because it is basically a Beatle show. If I had to add Beatle songs to a set list it would be "Rocky Racoon" and "Oh Darling". Unfortunately, he could not sing "Oh Darling" anymore.

__________________________________________________________ Yankeefan, As I said, I would go to the Tampa show with a lot of those Beatle songs he hasn't played to death. Rocky Raccoon would be a good one and I think his voice could handle an acoustic version of O Darling. I've seen a couple of acoustic versions on U-Tube that are very nice. Another couple of Beatle songs he has never done that I would love to hear are Martha My Dear and When I'm 64. Again, I doubt it. I think he will stick to the Japan setlist. Unfortunately, even with a basic Beatles show (as you said) his setlist could be so much better. As we know, the idea of Paul adding any Solo songs will not happen. As you and I have said, how difficult would it be for him to do a little great number like Put It There or Little Willow. Just crazy! The man just doesn't care about enhancing his Post Beatles legacy.
-
Why's I Wanna Be Your Man in the setlist? I like the song but I'd rather see Ringo perform that song. And now FourFive Seconds is back in the setlist. I'd take any Beatles, Wings or Solo song over that

He even had a new "story" about how when he plays an old song the cellphones all light up & with a newer song...not so much. He says something to effect of..but we don't care, we're doing it anyway.

I created a setlist that will fit Paul's voice Hofner: I Want To Hold Your Hand Junior's Farm Letting Go Take It Away Piano: My Valentine Here, There and Everywhere Waterfalls (in A) Let 'em In The Back Seat of My Car (In B) Acoustic set (with the band) Martin D-28: I Lost My Little Girl Love Me Do PS I Love You Heart Of The Country (in G#) Bluebird Junk Alone on stage (Martin D-28 Blackbird Woman (Tribute to John Lennon)(in D) Magic Piano: Queenie Eye Lady Madonna Tomorrow (in C) Your Mother Should Know Martin D-28: Every Night Ukulele: Something (Tribute to George Harrison) (Jazzy style) Ram On/Big Barn Bed Hofner: With a little luck When I'm 64 Good Morning Good Morning Eat at Home Band on the Run Piano: Let It Be Live and Let Die Magic piano: Hey Jude Epiphone Texan: Yesterday Calico Skies (Tribute to Linda McCartney) (in C) Hofner: Helen Wheels Gibson Les Paul custom: Sgt Pepper's/The End Italic = First time ever (or first time as a solo artist)

He prefers to repeat the core of the shows again and again (songs and messages :mrgreen because he thinks (now longer than one decade) that the majority who visite his shows comes for the first time... and want mainly beatles and no solo songs.
Sadly, I think this is true. I know many people who still haven't ever seen him, or people who saw him just once back in 1990 or 1993, and are only interested in going again because they want their kids to see him. Some of those people don't know any of the solo catalog that most of us are wishing for, and they would be going to see "Beatle Paul" for sure. And I know fanbases for other performers are complaining about the same kind of thing. Tom Petty is on a 40th anniv. tour, and I've read comments from his fanbase about his setlist; that there are too many "hits" and not enough deep cuts. And I think when you go to larger concerts these days, most people are there just to hear songs they know, or to say they were "there" and post it to Facebook. They don't care about the performer's whole catalog of music.

It is a direct result of the financial and egotistically motives that drive people like Paul. He could easily do weirdo setlists and still pack the house AND still sound damn good too. BUT, he's going to be in venues half the size if that becomes the norm for him and he'll be on the Bob Dylan, Robert Plant etc. type circuit of amphitheatres and minor-leaque ballparks.

Funny...you mentioning venues half the size reminded me of Ringo. Now there's another Beatle but he can't fill the type of places that Paul does. Why can't the 1st timers just go & see him? LOL. I know...Paul does more of the famous Beatles songs. You are right though that he could still sound decent with a different setlist. Maybe use more songs that he wrote for his more mature voice.

I will repeat my idea that I posted several years ago which I thought would have been great. McCartney does totally non-Beatle shows in small venue in major cities like NY and London. Maybe 2-3 shows in each city. He advertises that it is a non Beatle shows so people know what to expect. He records a couple of these shows and than creates a DVD of these performances and sells a limited amount of them to only members of this board. This would have be great for him because he could have been loose without worrying about his Beatle legacy. He also is rewarding fans of this board with something special that only they can purchase. I understand he would not attempt something like that now but it could have been done maybe around 2001.
-
Even easier, yankeefan7: just rebrand the soundcheck as a solo only mini concert. Expand the ticket allotment and make it separate from the VIP packages. Done. He's guaranteed to face a pro-solo career audience that would go nuts even for his usual soundcheck songs. I dont see the downside.
