and no one wants to bring up the fact that the NRA is a white organization. Mostly if not all.

I've been following this conversation closely as I'm in the classroom every day. I will say that arming teachers or having armed officers in school is just NOT the answer. Guns and students don't mix. I'm not for desensitizing students to guns or their presence in those students' lives. That would be like saying that no new drivers' licenses should be given out because there are too many traffic accidents. Guns in schools? No way. Not a chance.
I don't know why you laugh about the suggestion walliebaby. There are schools in Chicago where I'm from that have metal detectors and armed cops in them already, and you don't see this type of stuff happening, even though these schools are loaded with gang members etc. it works. And you all can go around thinking you're gonna change everyone's heads, but I say I'll pay a little more in taxes to have the added protection of an armed officer protecting my kids in school. Arming teachers is not what I'm saying. I'm just saying one or two armed cops is totally a viable option. It would absolutely stop the chances of what just happened from ever happening again. Again, it's not a laughing matter.
Kapoo...I am in Chicago too & we both know it doesn't only happen in scholls. What about all the shootings all frickin year long? Innocent kids & even adults are shot for no reason. Cops at every svhool will not work. There will never be that kind of money available unless the parents pay a special tuition or something. The guns will never be taken off the streets.
The reason you don't have mass shootings in these inner city schools is because they already have metal detectors and police presence. Yeah the gangs off themselves one at a time out of school, but at least for the most part it's gangs and drug dealers shooting themselves up. In the worst areas you don't see these mass school shootings cause there's already police presence. Time to bring it to the white affluent suburbs I you ask me.
ehhh...check some death totals over weekends in the summer. This year I was shocked to hear maybe 20 or more were killed over the weekend. It's all too much. If you have armed guards in schools...after awhile they'll be like the airport people...snoozing on the job...slackin off...totally uninterested. Mall cops.
Last year there was a full time armed policeman in the school where I worked. He was always alert and ready to roll. I talked to him sometimes. He was all business, no nonsense type. All you had to do was request his presence. He would be there in a second. He got a kid to tell who stole a teacher's phone (she always locked it up after that) and those kids NEVER TELL on each other. With all of the taxes we pay, why CAN'T we have an armed policemen at every school. It will create more jobs AND protect children and teachers. Seems like a win win to me.
Thank you, good post. Arming every teacher is idiotic, but putting armed guards in schools unfortunately may be required. and like I've said, its already happening in many of the worst school systems in the country. and you don;t hear about mass shootings in those schools. its always the affluent 'white' 'not a care in the world' areas. time to wake up. And where's the proof there was an armed guard at Columbine, cause I had never heard that. Sounds made up. Did the armed guard do anything? If there was one, well hopefully future officers will be more up to the task. and believe me, I am the biggest proponent of outlawing 99% of guns. Who the hell needs an ooozi, no one. I'm just saying, I'm tired of leaving our kids exposed.
I shutter to think what arming tchrs and principals would look like. Probably have MORE shootings, LOL (I know, inappropriate observation for this thread. No offense intended.).

Here's the proof there was an armed guard at Columbine.... http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2012/12/21/columbine_armed_guard_colorado_shooting_shows_that_nra_s_shield_program.html Best chance kids have is if deranged killer does not have access to assault weapons that can kill dozens.

Kids, parents, teachers should not have to be fearful over being in school. Teachers everywhere are now concerned that they are sitting ducks. These are sad & scary times indeed.
-
Sorry but we got a shortern version of the press conference over here didnt anyone tell him teh GOODGUYS have guns already. please list below the federal, state , city, county bodies that hold guns ( mostly in my knowledge handguns). Then kindly pass onto the NRA, NRA just like the IRA the only peace lovong non sectarian organistion in Ireland ( warning that was political sacrasm).

Agreed. Schools should be safe for all. Childhood is short enough and kids should never have it (or their lives) so violently ripped from them.
-
These are sad and scary times because we live in a society that glamorizes guns and killing in movies, and glamorizes war in time-wasting X-Box battles.

Agreed to a point. I think that there is nothing wrong with enjoying a violent video game or movie in itself. I just actually watched all of Scarface the other day for the first time. I think the difference is that parents need to teach their children that it is all pretend and it is not ok to do any of these things in real life. Certainly a small child should never be near a violent video game or movie. And even when that child is older (let's say 13 or 14 on up) they need to already have instilled in them compassion for all other living things.
-
There are people that are blaming video games, movies, etc. Well what about all the killing & violence when there were no video games or movies to blame?
-
Like when misguided vigilantes kill unarmed black teenagers?

What's scary is when you look at the "Homicides per residents." NY had over 400, but it's rate is 4 per 100k residents Chicago is 19.4 per 100k Detroit is 53 per 100k New Orleans is 54. F*cking sickening!

i have been recently not when these was a a more virbrant community and there were far more "bloody" yanks abonding it . People who i didnt agree asked me to fins out usefull locall informatiom like four cities i know and can update quickly whjat areas not to stry into ( all big cities have them). Fact inknown city - danger - more danger if they have guns - fact from usa cops and my experence they dont use them they just want money. fact 4 usa cops in talks with me ( ex cop) all want you lot to be regualted more than federal statures allow. WHY they told me since 2001 of suiucides and family murders that i never saw nor two friends in northern ireland saw ( more legal guns) or officers from three countires covering about 7 million people. THe guns were legally held the NRA say is is the people tnhat commit crime how can thay be against more comtrols.? Sorry stupid guy till he wAas 7 was surrounded by guns then movecd to ulster and only one in like fifty used illegally - he shot himself. - part - time cooper - in my view apart from the ira he shouldnt have ever had a gun. guns kill so people should expect the astate to regulate them.

Unfortunately, there needs to be armed security in schools in these very troubled times.

Definitely. But I don't agree with arming teachers -- that would be a string of disasters waiting to happen. I don't think that school boards would ever go for it anyway -- they can smell the potential "wrongful death" lawsuits already.

My thoughts and prayers goes out to the parents. I agree, that teacher do not need to be armed. There are other solutions to this dilemma which the government can resolve.

Local teachers went to school here trained better to handle situations especially in the art of self defense. love doris

School should be a good place, not a place where even the littlest children have to fear every moment they are there.
