I am hoping for something new to be played in September. I love the songs he plays but after seeing Sir Paul 126 times live, I long for some new songs. I wish his live shows would show the creativity and experimentalism that his recording career has. After so many times, it's a tad bit disappointing for him to stay stagnant and lack any spontaneity. I understand that much of the crowd are casual fans but all it would take is 3 or 4 songs out of 36 that would also satisfy the hard core fan as well.
___________________________________________________________ Well said Bob. Yankee fan and I have said pretty much the same thing. We're not asking for wholesale changes...just 3 or 4 fresh songs that show he has had a very good Solo Career and change them more often. Temporary Secretary, 4-5 Seconds, Save Us, Queenie Eye, New etc. have already been played long enough. Even on the Beatles side, my guesses for the "surprises" in Miami were totally wrong. I was guessing Penny Lane, A Day in the Life and the full Sgt. Pepper to give the setlist some refresh. I was 0 for 3.

Guys here's my perspective, reflecting back about 11 hours after the show ended. Given this was the 6th time I've seen him, I like many on here (obviously) would have greatly appreciated a set that consisted of "forgotten" solo hits from the 70s-90s with some obscure Wings songs and only a handful of Beatles songs in between. That said, many people there - perhaps the majority - were seeing him for the first time and most of these people were wearing Beatles shirts and as I chatted with these folks in line at concession stands, conversations like "what's your favorite Beatles album" dominated the discussions. These are the people he plays for and he knows it. In fact he even made a crack about knowing which songs the audience prefers based on the number of cell phones out during classic Beatles songs and the lack thereof when he breaks out a song from "New." I may have been one of a handful that cheered during Save Us, New and Queenie Eye. I feel sad that Paul feels the need to justify why he still plays these songs even though they aren't crowd favorites. Nevertheless, he clearly caters to the masses. Again, I've now seen him six times and the set list has the same core staples that it has had since 2002 - and that's fine by me if it means that for those first timers, he is fulfilling a dream by hearing Hey Jude, Let it Be and Yesterday live by the man who penned them.
___________________________________________________ Live Forever...very fair review and perspective. Like you, I understand why Paul continues to play the same 15-20 "signature songs" (mainly Beatles but a few of the Wings' hits). I have never had a problem with that part of his recent tours (One on One and Out There). At the same time, I don't feel there is anything wrong with true fans on this site giving some constructive criticism to Paul relative to his song selections since 2013. Most of us are not "mean spirited". I have been in this camp as someone who has seen Paul like 10 times from 1990 (the Flowers tour). Personally, I don't think Macca has taken enough planning and rehearsal time to really guarantee that the serious fans get as much back as the 1st or 2nd timers. I was looking for 3 legitimate surprises in Miami from what he played in Tokyo or what he has played since the "Out There" tour. I don't think we got one. If I was a serious Beatle Paul fan (and someone who has seen him multiple times) I would have been disappointed that he continues to play Mr. Kite and I Want to be Your Man instead of true "signature songs (that he has done before) like Penny Lane, A Day in the Life or Getting Better". Now those would have been legitimate surprises. As a Solo fan, I also get very frustrated that he continues to drag out the same "New" songs. There he has the opportunity to freshen the setlist with new Solo songs. And don't get me started with Temporary Secretary (not even the 5 or 6th best song on McCartney 2) and 4-5 Seconds. OK to have played them but now is the time to change them and give the "true" fans something different. Yes I'm not the type of fan (hard core as compared to casual) that Paul is playing for these days. I get that and I understand that my choosing to skip this tour will not hurt Paul in the least. But I have every right to constructively criticize his song choices. Most of us are not mean spirited here. The US crowds (predominantly 1st timers and casuals) are going to love this tour and I am truly happy for them. I just wish that Paul would "challenge" his audience more and not be afraid to shake up part of the show (the non-signature songs part) with tasty Solo songs he has never or rarely played. So what if the phones don't light up on every song. Speaking of Solo, I was the 1st person to "go after" a music critid in the Bradenton Herald (Tampa area) who was vicious about Paul's Post Beatles career. I write about it on the Tampa thread. I love Paul McCartney (my favorite music artist over the last 50 plus years) and I will come to his defense against some 2 bit critic who obviously is biased in a heartbeat.. At the same time, I just don't think that Paul has helped his own music career and legacy from his perspective of his live shows. And it has nothing to do with the "signature" songs that I understand he has to play.
Excellent post and I am glad you went after that critic. If I get around to it I may write and inform that critic than albums like "TOW", "Flaming Pie" and "CHAOS got Grammy nominations for best album of the year. Rolling Stone called TOW a masterpiece in their review. RS also said "New" was the 3rd best album of that year. I found it interesting the critic would not say anything about the "Fireman" albums especially EA which was critically acclaimed. Yes, Paul McCartney was fantastic during his Beatle and Wings days but he has also has done great writing/singing since 1980.

Hi guys! It's been about 14 hours since the concert ended and I am experiencing a serious concert withdrawal. I've been to other concerts before and was fine the next day, but it must be Sir Paul and the affect he has on everyone. I was contemplating going to the Tampa show, my brother lives there and he's also a Paul fan. So I wouldn't have had to pay for living arrangements and would have had someone to attend the concert with. Alas, I work on Monday and I can't make the trip. Everyone who has spoken here so far are members who have seen Paul more than once and I can understand the frustrations of those who wish for a change in the setlist. As for me? This is my first time seeing Paul and I could not have been happier. Yes, there were some songs I wish he played -- ranging from the Beatle years, to Wings, to his solo career -- however, I had an absolutely fantastic time with the songs he did play. I understand when Paul says why he plays the same songs during every concert. In the Miami concert, he had the oldest people, the youngest kids, and everything in between come to watch him. He has to cater to the taste of the general population and those, as many have said on here, are first-timers. It's difficult to shake up the setlist when you have that kind of population at every McCartney concert. Perhaps one day he'll have an intimate show only for the fans who want to hear the deep cuts and rarities -- which I will be at as well. But I absolutely enjoyed the concert. I sang and (tried to) dance my heart out. I was in section 112, the sections right above floor. Although I had a great time I was slightly annoyed by the amount of people that were sitting down. They only got up when a hit Beatles tune came up, or for Live and Let Die/Band on the Run. At one point my friend and I were standing and enjoying the music, when a lady behind us told us to sit down because she couldn't see. : I wanted to give her a piece of my mind but refrained... Also, the person's sign that said "....Give me body art" (forgot what the entire thing said) and Paul responded with "Not sure what the wife would think about that one" is my friend. She has loved Paul since 4th or 5th grade, we're 21 now. So I was SUPER EXCITED when he acknowledged her and her sign. She must be feeling over the moon right now. All in all, I loved this concert. I wish he was playing a second night in Miami like it was originally supposed to be. Now I'm wondering if I should go to New York and catch one of his shows there, my sister lives there so I can possibly crash with her for a while. But it all depends on my job and my classes. I love Paul McCartney so much, and I am so glad I got to go this concert. Hopefully it won't be my last! For all those who are upset with his setlist, I understand, but if you take the majority into account then it's a darn great setlist. Some of us couldn't see him during the Beatle years, or Wings, or his solo tour in the 90s, so he tries to give us all a little bit of everything (granted, majority is Beatles and Wings). At the end of the day, everyone ends up having a rocking time at the end! edit: I also want to add that I LOVE Temporary Secretary. I love it more cause my brother and I always rock out to it. It's his favorite Paul song, probably. So I was SUPER ecstatic when he played it!

Over/Under 1) We (us on the board) are Overestimating the amount of people at arenas that think the way we do. As someone there last night, my experience was the same as before overwhelming majority don't care about new songs. You feel the electricity of the crowd when they realize it's a Beatle song. 2) We underestimate the power of the Beatles back catalogue. Even the "B list" songs get more of a warm reception than Solo ones. 3) We are probably overestimating Paul's own thoughts on his music. As a practical matter, Take it Away is just as much as Paul's song as Back in the USSR. It appears Paul views all his songs as his, and the distinctions are drawn along the lines of Popularity and Personal Attachment instead of Decades or Band/Solo. Look, I agree that he should change things, but I don't have a problem with the existing ratio. Just change within the ratio. Play Alligaror instead of one of the "New" album songs. The band already knows it. Swap a Beatle for a Beatle. Wings for Wings.

Just being the devil's advocate here...not making a personal comment at all...but you state that he is fulfilling a first timers dream...what about those that have known & loved him his entire career? I think those people deserve to hear some more current songs that he has written. Not just Four Five Seconds. The man has an amazing catalog to choose from. But I get it...it is what it is...he's carrying the Beatles torch to the finish line & when you are there in person you sing along & LOVE it. Can't wait till he comes here.
Can't argue with that, I guess I've just resigned to the fact that this is the way it is and so I choose to accept it and embrace it. There will come a day, maybe sooner than later, that we won't be able to hear any of these songs live again. I'll just continue to cherish every chance I get to hear him live. When I saw him in 2002 it was a moment I never thought would come...15 years later I still find myself "pinching myself" when I am at a Paul show.
Well said. I started seeing him in 2002 at 16 years old.. thought it was a once in a lifetime thing. Here I am 15 years and 17 shows later.. still pinching myself and wishing to keep these Macca concert moments trapped in a personal snow globe.

Why keep going after 126 times if Paul disappoints you? I know what to expect and keep that as my expectation.

We all have our opinions, but the only one that counts is Mr. McCartney's as far as what his setlist is going to be. I love his concerts and would enjoy hearing what I want to hear but that is not going to happen. Until it changes to expect anything different is unrealistic. There are threads for setlist discussions this is for the Miami concert so let's get back to topic.

Still on my phone so just some comments..new jacket with sgt.'s stripes on the left arm. He did the sign reading while standing on the rising platform before giving the Blackbird intro. Again, audience was singing quite well all night. I thought it was interesting that one piano ballad was removed (the Long/Winding Road/Here There Everywhere slot). No new piano song replaced it.

Yes, some great pics with his Sgt stripes in the papers!

Great article: http://www.miaminewtimes.com/music/paul-mccartney-gives-the-people-what-they-want-at-aaa-9479116
Maybe it's this undeniable verve that made the show such a hit. Maybe it's the fact that so many music fans have a connection to the Beatles that we can't help but find something to like in the incredibly varied performance. I wouldn't call Paul McCartney's latest South Florida appearance a perfect show - he could stand to trim a few songs from the set - but it was damn close. And I know because what gave me hearing damage last night wasn't the bang of the fireworks or the crash of the drums: it was the cheering crowd, young and old (but mostly old), screaming for an encore.

Not my pix, but here are some in this Fans On The Run album. There are a few new shirts. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1572215589479478.1073741953.203623856338665&type=3 There is a tour program but I did not buy it or get a look at it yet.

More randomness...Chris Holmes dj'd until 8 pm and the preshow started right after he was done. Same style video clips revolving on the two screens on either side of the stage. Same 35 minute length before Paul came on stage. ð???

I still enjoy the shows and nothing wrong with hoping for a few surprises. And I'd offer that I have the right to hope for a better presentation the same way that you have learned to except lower expectations. That is your right and I don't have a problem with that. The man has the most amazing catalog out there, let them breath a little. I still love those songs but continue to hope to walk in and be floored with a surprise or two And the small amount of disappointment is simply that his live shows do no reflect the creativity and spontaneity that his recording career as shown.

After looking at the setlist, I too was a little let down, but at the same time I totally get it. Like others have said on here before, I'm still thrilled to see him for the 5th time coming up. We have to also keep in mind that his life doesn't revolve around us (a very small percentage of the people who are actually at the show). His life doesn't revolve around adding some of his greatest deep tracks. I'm sure he doesnt spend his time thinking about what songs from 20-30 years ago he could add that only 5% of the audience will love. In fact, I could probably bet that he doesn't remember half of the songs that we mention on here that we want. The man is constantly writing new music all of the time. Think how many songs he has written, and then rehearsed at the time, and then recorded for the album. I even read in an interview that Hard Days Night was brought up to him recently before the One on One tour, and he had practically forgotten that one. Basically what I'm trying to say is that Paul has an amazing catalogue of music, SO many songs. Sometimes the songs we want to hear wont work out great in the live setting as well to keep in mind...

And while I agree to a point, adding 2 or 3 songs would not change the experience all too much for the casual fan....still 34 others they know and love
-
I agree with you as well. To be fair, this is still the "One on One" show. So I'm sure he's going under the assumption that he's still playing to brand new audiences, and new cities. It would really be a drag to see the same 38-39 song set with his next tour...
