90's Disc for 5 CD Paul McCartney Anthology called "Sticking Out of My Back Pocket"

      1. Mama's Little Girl (B-side to Put It There/1990 Remaster)

      2. Same Time Next Year (B-side to Put It There/1990 Remaster)

      3. The Lover's That Never Were (Original Paul/Elvis Costello Acoustic Demo...great vocal and better than Off the Ground studio Version in my opinion)

      4. Hope of Deliverance - Pick the best "live" version from all the live performances

      5. Get Out of My Way - Pick the best "live" version...the Ed Sullivan Theatre performance was very good

      6. I Can't Imagine - (B-side of C'mon People)

      7. Looking for Changes - Pick the best "live"version...the Ed Sullivan Theatre performance was very good

      8. Kicked Around No More - (B-Side of Hope of Deliverance)

      9. Keep Coming Back to Love - (B-Side of C'Mon People)

      10. I Owe it All to You - Pick the best "live" version ...the Ed Sullivan theatre performance was very good

      11. Long Leather Coat - (B-side of Hope of Deliverance Single)

      12. Peace in the Neighborhood - 1993 "live" version on Youtube where Wix had a Solo Piano intro that was great

      13. Big Boys Bickering - (B-side of the Hope of Deliverance Single)

      14. C'Mon People - 1993 "live"version on Youtube from Chile was better and much superior to the studio version

      15. Love Come Tumbling Down - (B-side of the Beautiflu Night Single

      16. Sweet Sweet Memories - (B-side of the Off the Ground Single)

      17. Beautiful Night - One of Paul's very best Solo songs in my opinion

      18. Calico Skies - Pick the best "live" version; Paul added it to his tours in the 2000's

      19. Young Boy - Another great song on Flaming PIe and not on Pure McCartney

      20. I Love This House - Unreleased but Paul put it on one of his "Oobu Jooby Shows"; David Gilmour on guitar

      21. Love Mix - Unreleased song but Paul put it on one of his "Oobu Jooby Shows and also a B-side on the Beautiful Night Singles...very underrated in my opinion

      22. Run Devil Run - title track for Run Devil Run album; great Paul rocker;  you could also pick one of the great "live" versions)

      23. Brown Eyed Handsome Man - great Run Devil Run Chuck Berry cover that Paul makes his own

      24. What It Is - another great Paul song on Run Devil Run

      25. No Other Baby - great cover on Run Devil Run that Paul makes his own; I've seen a "Lipa Performance" where's Paul's vocal was fabulous

      26. Lonesome Town - great Ricky Nelson cover on Run Devil Run that Paul makes his own; several "live" versions that are great

My 90's List above is a good example of what I mean when I say "looking at the overall  concept" of this kind of "Career Spanning Anthology" raither than looking at all the actual individual songs themselves.

On the whole I like my list above because of the variety of songs (many B-sides and excellent "live" versions when Paul's voice was top notch)  even though Paul only had 2 full albums of original McCartney songs released during  the 90's...Off the Ground and Flaming Pie.  Besides the wonderful Flaming Pie, he did have many good "leftover" songs from the original Off the Ground  Album which  made my list.  The other surprise album in the 90's (albeit mostly cover songs) was Run Devil Run.  Paul's voice was wonderful on the studio album but he also had some great performances during the subsequent live shows to promote Run Devil Run.

When I look at the above list however,  I feel like I kind of shortchanged a couple of the best songs from Flaming Pie.  I might have done that subconsciously because Paul was generous with Flaming Pie songs on the Pure McCartney Compilation.  Still, if it was totally up to me, I would have to include "Little Willow" which I inadvertently left off this list.  I personally think that "Little Willow" would make a "Top 10" list of all time Paul's Solo songs.  Not only do I love Paul's lyrics, but I also love Jeff Lynne's production help.  I could easily substitiute "Little Willow" for either "Peace in the Neighborhood" or "C'Mon People".  I was never thrilled with the studio versions of those songs on Off the Ground.  The main reason I chose them was because I really liked a couple "Live Versions" of the songs that in my opinion were far superior than the studio performances.

Another possible song inclusion for the 90's might be "Broomstick" a virtually unknown  B-Side on the Young Boy Single.  Again, "Broomstick" is q perfect song that this type of Career Spanning Paul Anthology.  It's a good song that even hard core McCartney fans don't either know or don't have in their collections.

My final possible substitution to the above 90's List would be a song from Paul's quickly done MTV "Unplugged" Performance and supsequent surprise album released in June 1991.   To make the 90's Disc really unigue, I would add one of the  songs that  Paul and Band performed on the "Unplugged" Show called "Midnight Special".   It was done on the show but was never included on the subsequent "Unplugged" album that many fans (including myselt) bought.  What a surprise if it was included on the 90's Disc for the Anthology.

So many choices for each Decade's tracklist and I would leave that up to Paul's team but I think many fans can see what a great "Career  Spanning" Post Beatles' Paul Anthology this could be.  I would be first in line to buy it.

As you know, I was always a fan of "Little Willow" and thought it would have been a wonderful edition to his setlist during acoustic part of show. I would substitute it in a heartbeat over "Peace In The Neighborhood" or "Cmon People".

Couldn't agree more Yankeefan about "Little Willow" over either Peace in the Neighborhood and C'Mon People.  I couldn't believe that I had inadvertently left "Little Willow" off my 90's Disc list.  Just too many Paul songs to consider!

I will be very interested once we see the tracklisting for the "Archive" FP Release supposedly coming out in July this year.  I'll be especially interested in seeing the "bonus tracks" that  hopefully will be available in an affordable 2 Disc  package a from Target.  Will be get some studio outtakes/demo's from various FP songs on the 2nd Disc?  We should also get B-sides from the FP singles which includes "Looking For You" and "Broomstick" from the "Young Boy" Single. Personally, I like "Broomstick" better.  There are also 2 B-Sides from the "Beautiful Night" Single.  They were "Love Come Tumbling Down" and "Same Love".  All 4 of the B-Sides could be included on a future type of Paul Anthology By Decade I'm suggesting.  I had already put "Love Come Tumbling Down" on my proposed 90's Disc above.  It is another great "unknown" gem in my opinion and is perfect for an Anthology type of future package for fans.

        4. About You - great underpublicized rocker from Driving Rain

        6. Your Way - Another terrific hidden "countryish" song from Driving Rain

        7. Back to the Sunshine Again - Really good "soulful" song from Driving Rain cowritten by Paul and his son James; Love Paul's soulful vocal a la Al Green.

        8. Whole Life -  A Paul and Dave Stewart cowritten rocker written for the Nelson Mandela Benefit.  Great rocker written around the 2004-2005 time period.  Paul's Band also plays on the track

        9. How Kind of You - Terrific hidden gem from Chaos and Creation

        10. Riding to Vanity Fair - In my opinion, the best song on Chaos and Creation and a little different for Paul

        11. Too Much Rain - Another great song on Chaos and Creation

        12. A Certain Softness - In my opinion, the most underrated song on Chaos and Creation with great production

        13. Summer of 59 - (Great B-side on the Jenny Wren Single

        14. This Loving Game - (Another B-Side with the Jenny Wren Single

        18. Only Mama Knows - Pick the best "live" version since Paul played this alot on his subsequent  tours

        19. That Was Me - Use the best "Live" version (Amoeba Gig or the Paris Concert

        20. House of Wax - Use the best "Live" version; the Amoeba Music live gig was also the B-Side of the Ever Present Past Single

        21. Mr. Bellamy - Another great underrated track on Memory Almost Full

        22. Why So Blue - One of the "extra songs" from the Memory Almost Full Sessions

        23. My Soul - Unreleased song collaborated with Natin Sawhney; very nice song

        24. Sing the Changes - Great song from the Electric Arguments album with Youth; Use the "live" version from Good Evening New York.

        25. Dance Till We're High - Great underrated track from Electric Arguments

        26. Sun is Shining - Another hidden gem from Electric Arguments

Looking back at the various Decades of Paul's Career, I was probably the most satisfied with my above LIst for the 2000-2010 period.  It felt good that Yankeefan loved it too.

In my opinion, Paul had his best back-to-back albums (Chaos and Creation, Memory Almost Full) in the middle of the decade since Band on the Run and Venus and Mars.  And it didn't hurt that's Paul's beginning and end of the Decade was pretty darn good (Driving Rain and Electric Arguments).  Unlike many, I liked many of the songs on Driving Rain so I feel as though it is an underrated Paul Album.

As far as tweeking the above list, you can always make some subtle changes and I'm would be just as happy with a few changes.  Here are my thoughts:

*I would still stay away from adding the "Singles" that were released from Chaos ( Fine Line, Jenny Wren, This Never Happened Before that were also on Pure McCartney) but I could easily see adding "At the Mercy" or "Friends to Go".  The two latter songs are terrific and were not on Pure McCartney nor did Paul perform them on his subsequent tours.

*You could add the above Chaos songs and delete a couple from Driving Rain like Lonely Road, Your Loving Flame or one of the deeper cuts I listed like Back in the Sunshine Again.  Another song that arguably could be added to the above List would be from Memory Almost Full..."The End of the End".  That's a great song in my opinion and really speaks to the latter part of his career.

Again, these are changes that I would have no problem with.  The whole point of this future Career Spanning Anthology is to focus on the more "deeper cuts" but still great Paul songs.

I was not a big fan of "Your Loving Flame" so I would have no problem with that being replaced -lol.  One final thought about this thread, it makes me sad in a way that there is so much great music that you listed that will never be recognized or heard by many people. McCartney's career to most people is all about the Beatles/Wings and while that is understandable it still does not ignore the fact that he has been making fantastic music 40 years after Wings !! Outside of a few music critics and fans like yourself it is like this music never existed - oh well.

Thanks Yankeefan.  Loved your last point about Paul's music and general reputation after Wings.  His music over the last 40 years has been so underrated in my opinion.

When looking at Paul's last compilation "Pure McCartney" it was totally dominated by Pauls 70's music.  This is why a new "Paul McCartney Career Spanning Anthology By Decade" will be needed in a couple of years.  The overall tracklisting in this type of Compilation would be "equal" to all eras of Macca's entire music career...the 80's, 90's, 2000's, 2010's etc.

Just something to ponder. What musical performer from a classic rock group has been a more prolific and succesful songwriter after leaving their group or staying with that group for decades than McCartney? Think how little new music there has been from groups like The Rolling Stones or The Who for example. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page have done some albums after Led Zepplin but not many. Off the top of my head, Sting is the only one fairly close to McCartney with recordings after he left the Police. McCartney IMO is not commended enough for all the amazing songs/albums he has created the last 40 years. I wish more people would be like the guys from the "Take It Away" podcast  and look at McCartney's solo career and put how great he has been the last 40 years in perspective.

                16. Ever Present Past - One of the best songs on Memory Almost Full

                17. See Your Sunshine - The best underrated track on Memory Almost Full; great bass and bridge

I agree with adding "Friends To Go" and one other song I would suggest is "Promise To You Girl".

Yankeefan...your point about Paul's music after Wings (like 40 years ago)  being so underrated and under the radar  is so true.  I did the numbers on Paul's last Compilation called "Pure Mccartney" and Paul even himself proves the point.

If you look at Paul's full Post Beatles' Career, he actually became a non entity  when it came to being a consistent Top 40 US/UK Music Artist.  That ended in 1983 with his last top 10 hit...No More Lonely Nights on his Broad Street album.  He had big Top 10 hits from his previous albums like Pipes of Peace, Tug of War, McCartney 2, London Town albums etc.

If you look at "Pure McCartney"released in 2016, the 2 Disc Basic Version had a total of 39 tracks but with only 11 songs released and written after No More Lonely Nights (on the Broad Street album).  They were:

1.The Song We Were Singing (Flaming Pie 1997)

                2. Sing the Changes (Electric Arguments 2008)

                3. Jenny Wren (Chaos and Creation 2005)

                4. Save Us (New 2013)

                5. Too Much Rain (Chaos and Creation 2005)

                6. My Valentine (Kisses 2012)

                7. The World Tonight (Flaming Pie 1997)

                8. Dance Tonight (Memory Almost Full 2007)

                9. Great Day (Flaming Pie 1997)

                10. Only Mama Knows (Memory Almost Full 2007)

                11. Hope for the Future (Non-Album Single 2014)

While I like all 11 songs and they are all good songs,  they aren't even the best songs on their respective albums although maybe "Sing the Changes" is the best song on Electric Arguments.  The point is that this is why Paul needs a more current and career spanning Compilation.  That is why I been doing "Macca Lists by each Decade".  Hopefully the true McCartney fans will get one in a couple of years.

                  2. Lonely Road - Choose the best "live" track for this Driving Rain song

                  3. Your Loving Flame - Choose the best "live" track for this great ballad from Driving Rain

                  4. About You - great underpublicized rocker from Driving Rain

                  5. Magic - One of the great hidden tracks from Driving Rain about the day that Paul met Linda

Didn't mean to be so sarcastic with me last paragraph.  As I said, the 11 songs are good songs but Paul left off so many good to great songs beginning with the Press to Play Sessions in 1985 all the way up to his latest Egypt Station Sessions.

Looking at the 11 songs, there were only:

                  3 songs from Flaming Pie

2 songs from Chaos and Creation

2 songs from Memory Almost Full

                  1 song from Electric Arguments

1 song from Kisses on the Bottom

                  1 song from New

1 non-album song (Hope for the Future)

On the basic 39 track 2 CD package from Pure McCartney, there weren't any songs from Press to Play, Flowers in the Dirt, Off the Ground, Run Devil Run, Driving Rain and of course Egypt Station which didn't come out until after Pure McCartney was released.

I knew "Pure McCartney" would not be something I would be interested in buying when I saw it did not include one song from FITD. If they do try and make a solo compilation in a few years, I hope it resembles what you suggested on this thread more than "Pure McCartney".

Thank you for not quoting the last 7 posts between you and B J! 😂

P.S. You know why there was not one song from FITD, don't you? He was trying to sell the Deluxe Archive version of FITD around the same time.

Well, I don't think adding a song or two from FITD would have really hurt the sales of the re-issue but what the heck do I know -lol.

My wife and I left "warm and sunny" Tampa Florida on Monday morning and just arrived in Chicago last night.  We went by car since my wife's daughter is getting married this Saturday and ti made sense to drive since we are bringing lots of stuff.  While it is cold in Chicago, it is not too bad for this Florida "wuss".  It is sunny and going up to 50 today so I guess I should consider myself lucky.  And I brought my long underwear! We are staying at a nice AirBNB that is only two blocks from a Miriano's which is a great local Supermarket.  To me it was like a mini Wegman's (for those from the Northeast) and they had great take out Coffee.  That's all I need to be pretty darn happy.

Getting back to all things Paul, I didn't really remember how many great songs (from mid 80's on) that Paul didn't even include on the Basic 39 track 2 CD Pure McCartney.  Just looking at Flaming Pie as an example, the "basic" Pure McCartney Compilation (the biggest seller) has just 3 FP songs..."The Song We Were Singing", "World Tonight" and "Great Day".  Aa I said, good songs but the best songs on FP in my opinion are "Calico Skies", "Beautiful Night", "Little Willow", "Young Boy", "Somedays", "Souvenir", "Heaven On A Sunday" etc.

After looking at the basic, 2 CD tracklisting for Pure McCartney, it convinces me more than ever that Paul will need an updated Compilation/Anthology in a couple of years that covers all facets of his incredible eras of songwriting.  When I saw that the basic Pure McCartney Compilation only had 11 songs after "No More Lonely Nights" I was convinced.

That is funny BJ, my wife and I arrived in St. Pete/Tampa on Mar 5th and left Mar 8th. I went to my first Yankee ST game ever on Mar 6th and had great time. My in-laws live in Tampa so we hung out with them, went down to the riverfront and enjoyed musical festival on Saturday night. They live near a place where you can see manatees and that was fun also. Went to local zoo also which is always fun. Stay warm in Chicago.

                              Yankeefan,

We left Chicago yesterday and arrived in Chattanogga last night which is where my wife's sister lives.  So glad to have some warmer weather.  Tonight for my wife's birthday, we're going to a concert with an artist that she really likes...Mark Broussard.  He is mainly a soul, New Orleans type singer and musician.  I've gotten to like his style too.  We had started to see what kind of a concert we could attend around her birthday and it just happened that Mark was appearing in Chattanooga on our way coming home from Chicago.

I really like Tampa too and glad to hear that you got to a Yankee's ST game.  We live northeast of Tampa (about 40 minutes or so) and I like the fact that the traffic is not bad most of the time.  We actually live close to Wesley Chappel and an area called New Tampa.  There's lots of good restaurants and good shopping.  We go into Tampa a decent amount of time and I really like it for our "City".  I'm not crazy about Clearwater (where the Phillies play ST).  The area has lots to do but the traffic is very congested most of the time being right on the Gulf.  Besides being fairly close to Tampa we are also not too far from Disney (about 1 hour).  We get annual Disney passes real cheap so we like to visit Disney too.

                              Thanks

PS.  If you haven't done it already in Tampa, they also have a great Aquarium (near the Cruise Ships) and Busch Gardens is a lot of fun too.

My in-laws live not too far from Apollo Beach if that helps you know where we hung out. My entire family has annual Disney passes so we are there fairly often and most times that is where we meet up with my in-laws and youngest nephew. We will be back in April and might go to the space center, I have never been there yet. Have a great time with your wife on her birthday.

As for McCartney, I love the Anthology idea for his solo work. If they ever do one, once again I hope they follow your advice. Your thread has made me revisit some albums and check songs on youtube. One of them I found that I forgot about was "How Many People" from FITD. See youtube clip below.

Disneyworld is only closing for a couple of weeks and then they evaluate it. I went to the movies last night and will visit my brother in NY next week, checking up on him after his "chemo" treatments. In other words, you can't live in a total bubble IMO. Thanks for making link clickable, I always forget how to do it - lol.
